Hmmm I've been wondering about Batman after watching the Batman Begin and Batman Dark Knight films....I've always wondered...
Is Batman a Hero or a Vigilante? Looks like he started out as a Vigilante wanting Revenge for his parent's murder......but I just can't really tell if he walks that fine line....between Hero and Vigilante I don't read DC Batman comics that much so...I don't have all the info.

He's about as much a vigilante as any super hero who doesn't work directly for a government agency in some way. Somebody who takes the law into their own hands. That's everyone from Batman down to Plastic Man in a way.
However, I don't see him, or most of the other costumed heroes as "vigilantes" per se. They may work to stop crime and help the citizenry, but they hand criminals over to the authorities after they've been apprehended. They operate outside the system somewhat, but still rely on the system to protect the public. The only characters I'd consider true vigilantes are folks that operate like the Punisher. Acting as Judge, Jury, and Executioner is true vigilantism. These people take the law into their own hands and ignore the rule of law. Justified or not, they operate outside society norms.

Technically, he's both. Anyone who works outside the law is a vigilante.
Batman just happens to do that and be a good guy :0) plus he generally works within the confines of "law", he doesn't kill, he delivers criminals to the police, etc. Now the Punisher, in his early days (which is the last time I really followed him)? Straight vigilante. .... |

That's true, bats always seems to hand em over to the law to receive the Justice they deserve.
But I've always considered Bat's to be a borderline hero... Yeah the Punisher was a total vigilante, even in the spiderman series when he showed up to capture Spiderman when he mutated into the spider parker beast.

Superman is as much a vigilante as Batman, he's just more "accepted".
Neither are government (local or national or global) deputized officials, as such they are essentially making citizen's arrests everytime they do something. And why does he have to be a hero OR a viginilante? Aren't vigiliantes like Superman, Batman, Captain America, Iron Man also heroes at the same time?

The Movies seemed to portray him more as the Vigilante.
He probably appeared to be more Vigilante in the first Batman Movie showing up and being partially responsible[I think,it's been a while since I saw the first batman film] I guess for the creation of the Joker. And Gordon was pretty good spot on telling Bats about Escalation at the end of Batman Begins.

Superman is more of a Hero as he makes legal citizens arrest within the confines of the law. Batman steps outside those legal boundaries not to mention routinely breaks and enters establishments and steals property from crime scenes as well as punishing perps. making him a true Vigilante per the definition.

Plus probably breaks the posted speed limit too every time he's out in his batmobile....which probably isn't approved for roadway driving anyway LOL

Neither, he is a Dark Knight!
Its all in the eyes of the beholder. Some people would look at him as a modern hero and others as a vigilante. The last movie tried to touch on that. World is not just black and white, lots of gray. |

Actually, I believe (IIRC of course) that Superman has special deputy status or has been granted some sort of special status by the Metropolis police department.
Batman OTOH, is a vigilante who has his own moral code of conduct and is against killing. I wouldn't not consider Batman a hero just because he is a vigilante though. |
