I'd lean toward hero in a mythology where he terrifies regular criminals and rumors of him keep folks inside at night.
I just played Arkham Asylum for PS3 though, and if you take all of his history into account, there are SO MANY crazy villains exclusive to Gotham that seemed to develop themes and elaborate crimes to keep up with one individual. In that way, he may not be just a vigilante, but a menace! All characters with long histories get ridiculous when you add up everything though. |

Vigilante would be the official status of the law enforcement, but many of the actual cops would cheer and support him off record. Even a public official running for office would have to watch what they say. How the media reports on him would make a big difference on how people look at him.

I guess it also depends on what BATMAN we ar talking about:
In Batman Begins he goes from Vigilante to Hero and in The Dark Knight he goes from Hero to Cop Killer! |

A vigilante is someone who illegally punishes someone for perceived offenses, or participates in a group which metes out extrajudicial punishment to such a person. Often the victims are criminals in the legal sense, however a vigilante may follow a different definition of criminal than the local law.
By this definition I would have to say that Batman is a hero, but not a vigilante, because he doesn't punish criminals. He captures them so that they can be brought to justice by local law enforcement. |

Perhaps the miss-communication here is in the definition of a vigilante we are using. You are going by the definition as it exists in your head, and I am using the actual one. |

Batman doesn't beat the crap out of criminals as a means of exacting punishment upon them for the crimes they've committed (vigilante), he defends himself against violent criminals out to beat the crap out of him so that they can be brought to justice by local law enforcement (hero).
Perhaps the miss-communication here is in the definition of a vigilante we are using. You are going by the definition as it exists in your head, and I am using the actual one. Here is a true def. of Vigilantism: Taking the law into one's own hands and attempting to effect justice according to one's own understanding of right and wrong; action taken by a voluntary association of persons who organize themselves for the purpose of protecting a common interest, such as liberty, property, or personal security; action taken by an individual or group to protest existing law; action taken by an individual or group to enforce a higher law than that enacted by society's designated lawmaking institutions; private enforcement of legal norms in the absence of an established, reliable, and effective law enforcement body. Batman might be heroic but he is still a Vigilante. He also is depicted several times in the movies and comics as hitting or attacking first. Is it a means too a cause, yes but its still taking the law into his own hands. Not to mention he breaks laws all the time.... lol..... Dont make me call him a criminal...... I'll do it!!!
