Maybe I just hate origin stories, but is it me or do all #1 issues kind of suck?

I would have to say that there are many #1 issues that suck. Most of them end up causing readership to drop off and the title to end up cancelled. I think that #1 issue today is much better than it was in the 90's. Books average $3-$4 an issue. With that cost comic customers are more selective. If you want to read some great #1 issues from the past year check out Cowboy-Ninja-Viking, Chew, and Jesus Hates Zombies.

Not all #1s are origin story (Dr. Strange or even GI Joe). The early DC superheros didn't appear in the #1s usually (Detective comics, etc.) Not even Spider-man's first appearance was a #1.

Just depends on the book. I've read awesome #1s and really crappy #1's. I don't have as much patience for origin stories as I had when i was a kid though, so now I tend to wait for the 6 issue tpb to hit so I can read it as one story, kinda gets the issue #1 right out of the way and moves into the story

GI Joe #1 was great. All the others I've read pretty much suck.

I'm basically talking about comics where a new character is introduced. There are number ones I enjoy like Anti-Venom but it's easy to jump into because Eddie Brock is an established character. Then you have Spawn who had five straight issues of "Why am I alive? What are these powers? I miss Wanda! Waaah!".
