I guess you can pick any comic and find it's merits and drawbacks. As much as it was sort of cheesy to have to include every toy ever made. I loved to get an appearance of any one of my toys in the comics.
In the beginning it had to be easier, when things were more based in reality than say after year 5. Plus not as many toys came out any given year, so Hama could blend them in appropriately. Like for instance we see Lady Jaye and Ripcord in the same issue for the fisrt time obviously from two different years, but Hama didn't have to rush it. But once Serpentor and the HAVOC came around it had to start getting harder foir Hama. Don't get me wrong, after issue #11, the Cobra Civil War is my favorite series. I love Serpentor. But by Issue 130 it was all but over. Ninja Force, and everyone is related like a town of mountain Villagers. Eco Warriors sucked, but I love Cesspool. And the triple story issue with Eco Warriors, DEF, and Ninjas was pretty cool. Star Brigade was sort of Cool, but it was overly cartoony and it should have just been a seperate series altogether. I sort of liked Headman, as an outside threat to Cobra, but i was glad when it was over. I'd like to see him as more than just a Drug Dealer. Say Warlord or Mercenary army that is willing to move drugs for profit, like Columbian paramilitaries do. I only wish Html Comics had issues 12-19. They seem to be messed up and those are the exact years i missed. I often wonder if the Iron Grendiers was Hama's idea or Hasbro's. Just their introduction in 87 brought a lot of changes to the story. |

does anyone know what happened to Candy's dad, the guy who was key in making Cobra island happen?
I just finished the run... the issues pre-Serpentor are pretty strong, even if they still have a bit of cheese here and there, it's kept at a more enjoyable level. Even after Serpentor, as it got more sci-fi, it was solid. Once the ninja force, eco warriors stuff pops up though....... I have to agree towards the end it got lame in a lot of ways. I didn't mind ninja force much at first-I took consideration that it was the early 90s, so neon crappy toys were out...the characters themselves were ok, I wish they would have gotten more developed besides the silly wise cracking from one or two (I always thought the one with the facemask and dusty-like-head-wear was kinda cool looking) or could get developed more one day and perhaps given better costumes, more of an 80s style. But everyone being related one way or another, specially to snake eyes...sigh...the arashikage mindset nonsense did get boring after a while and the brain scanner was such a quick fix for any character change (they aren't in cobra anymore? brain scanner!). What happened to tomax and xamot? they seemed to drop off after a while. same thing with metal head (but that was a good thing for me). whatever happened to zandar and cesspool? wild weasel? the kid the blind master was mentoring and then zartan? and how cheesy bad was Rambo Snake Eyes by issue 150 or so? mullet and all. Some of the non-Hama issues, such as issue 121, I think, with the robot-look a likes, that was truly, truly awful and couldn't believe an adult could write such an idiotic story-felt like a script from one of the cartoons...and the scarlett and roadblock solo issues by the end of the run were horrid as well, even though the sad thing is they had better art than the artist that was sorta regular by then, phil gosier? which is too bad because 155 would have been so much better with one of the fill-ins. the particle beam seemed like it was going to go into over-use mode and the term "cluster foul-up" too. I'm kinda glad it ended when it did, loose threads and all, because it was getting waaaaayyyyyyy too cheesy, story wise and character designs wise. Last edited by elanmars; 02-09-2010 at 05:04 AM.. |

Candy's father realised that it was Ripcord and placed him in a Firebat to escape the island and then died as he stepped infront of SS's sword to stop him killing Ripcord (dressed as Zartan) just as the Firebat launched. |

Let's talk body count. I know the cartoon is ridiculed for no deaths and how everybody parachutes to safety. In the comics, the Cobra almost never eject. At least a couple of Cobras are killed every issue. I know it's war and all, but it kinda bugged me as a kid that the joes would make some sort of smart ass remark before the killshot. Even Barbeque barbequed a couple of Vipers in the last assault on the Pit, but not befor dubbing them "burn vipers" or something like that.
Destro's second castle must really stink. The ninja force killed a whole bunch of red ninjas in there. Others got crushed during the transformation. Frag, Tele, and Heat Vipers also died in there. You really think Destro could have found and cleaned out each dead body before moving in again with the Baroness? There must have been one or two left in a nook or cranny, stinking up the place. What's my point after all this rambling? The numberous Cobra deaths really shocked me as a kid, especially after watching the cartoon. |

The attack on the first PIT alone was a Cobra bloodbath

I think Snake-Eyes in the Cobra Consulate building had the highest body count, I mean he was setting off charges and throwing grenades like they were going out of style

what bothered me about the issues surrounding that time. if i I'm thinking of the same issue you are? is that some of the melodrama going on between characters didn't seem consistent...Baroness seemed very scared of Destro knowing of her motives and he was very bossy towards her yet right after the building burned he was so quick to run away with her and let darklon run the show, perhaps it was her brush with death I guess maybe...plus it also felt a tad contrived how the original CC returned while virtually the rest of the cobra command went away. I don't know. I know they eventually somewhat explained things and many came back of course but I dunno. a lot of dramatic irony going on then. but I know hama said he never knew what he was going to do with one character or story till the issue came along so I digress.
