Hey..I liked the black costume change. I was just getting into comics in 1983-1984 and one of the big hooks was Spidey.
I was used to the Spider-Man cartoons that had run forever-- where he worked for JJJ and fought goofy villains like Dr. Octopus and the Vulture. I flipped when I picked up a random issue of "Amazing Spider-Man" and saw things were completely different. Spidey worked for Robbie Robertson mostly, had a weird living costume, was boinking the Black Cat, all while fighting guys like Hobgoblin and Puma. Plus, as a rabid fanboy who liked to doodle, I found the black Spidey togs much easier to draw.

@82joe, if you go to your local comic book shop (if you have one) I know that many around here have large used graphic novel sections that could very well contain those collections. If not, I know the Masterworks volumes are at Barnes and Noble, but you only get 6 issues and they're a little pricey.

I wouldn't mind picking up some old reprinted Marvel Team Up, Amazing Spider-Man or Avengers reprints. I did a search on the internet but came up empty (could be because I don't really know what I'm looking for)
What I'm looking for are classic Marvel series reprinted on the high glossy paper like the Joe books (not the black and white Essential's books) Anything released between the late 70's up until about 1984 I'd be interested in. Can anybody steer me in the right direction? Much thanks in advance. Avengers Legends, Vol. 2 or Avengers: The Korvac Saga - Both collect Avengers 167-168 and 170-177. Avengers Legends, Vol. 3 or Avengers Visionaries: George Perez - Both collect Avengers 161-162, 184-196, and 201, and Annuals 6 and 8. Avengers: Nights of Wundagore - Collects Avengers 181-187. Spider-Man: The Amazing Spider-Man: A New Goblin - Collects ASM 176-180. The Amazing Spider-Man: Saga of the Alien Costume - Collects ASM 252-259. The Amazing Spider-Man: The Death of Jean Dewolff - Collects PPtSSP 107-110. The Amazing Spider-Man The Origin of the Hobgoblin - Collects ASM 238-239, 244-245, and 249-251 and Spectacular Spider-Man 85. Fantastic Four/Spider-Man Classic - Collects ASM 1, PPtSSM 42, FF 218; Marvel Team-Up 100, 132 and 133, and Untold Tales of Spider-Man '96. If you want a truly awesome collection of an awesome Marvel comic, IMHO The Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 1 is the best collection Marvel has ever issued. It's a massive oversize hardcover that collects Giant-Size X-Men 1 (1975), The Unacnny X-Men 94 (Aug. 1975) to 131 (Mar. 1980), and Annual 3 (1979). It's got restored art (much better than the Masterworks), great paper, and a sewn binding, and letter pages are included, to boot. And best of all, you can get it for around $75 (including shipping) bucks online. Anyway, good hunting. |
