I appreciate all her hard work. As Joe Taught Us About the Horrors of War. Larry Hama, the essayist, craftsman, and maker who gave the world the G.I. Through G.I. Joe, Hama additionally did the unforeseen and transformed the military-centered series into one that endeavored to "unglorify" battle as he never avoided topics of unwaveringness, misfortune, ethical quality or misdirection.

I remember it clearly. I took a break around 7th grade and didn't read for about 2 years, but got into high school and said "fuck it, I love GI Joe".
I bought 84 at a gas station near my house (what an era, having GI Joe comics at the gas station, and arcade machines for Strider and Karnov and 720!) and thought it was cool, with Zartan and all the red ninja. Then 85 hit and I was blown away at the notion of having a new "silent issue", so I absolutely love that issue (especially the urban camo SE, which is my all-time favorite action figure). Those were the last two I bought, but I remember flipping through later issues with the Firefly "reveal", Slice & Dice, and the return to the silent castle. I was huge into Daredevil, Punisher and Batman then, so I had to save my pennies. This is back when B Dalton and Waldenbooks had comics, before there were lots of comic book stores around San Antonio. So, when I got back into collecting in 2012, those were some key issues I bought, along with the Snake Eyes Trilogy. Sorry for the nostalgia rant... I know many people don?t want realism in their comics and toy lines, but I don?t mind a bit of darkness/reality from time to time. I need to pull those issues out and give them another read, it’s been a while. |

Around the Snake-Eyes trilogy and return of Cobra Commander. Baroness's reason for being a terrorist stems from a misunderstanding about her murdered brother. No, just no. 3 Cobras was enough to tie into Snake-Eyes' past. ALSO, preppy Destro was there, so he could be captain exposition decades later.
Scarlett surviving a head shot at close range. Cobra Commander surviving, letters page more or less BLAMES THE illustrator for misrepresenting CC's shooting "that was just some left over armor piece blasting off Cobra Commander's chest". Hama, AN ILLUSTRATOR, let that pass? Even if Larry didn't reply directly to that letter, it's still...not cool to fault the artist. Then stuff like Firefly, Ninja Master, Scarlett as the "traitor" (and it was so obvious Snake-Eyes was faking even to my kid eyes), and the series focusing on idiotic stuff like that ninja move where the ninjas all got on top of each other and Snake -Eyes just goes "LOL" and kills the dudes at the bottom. Cobra Commander also became insufferable and whiny, and felt like he was trying to be the cartoon version but not remotely as funny. |

I remember reading that as a teenager and being shocked and heart broken as no one does over 110 plus books and years of cartoons. Reflecting on it now, it was a bold move to make and ultimately a realistic take on war.

But this totally random Viper guy is able to mow down a bunch of Joes felt unbelievable. Realistic? Yes. GI Joe realistic? Not remotely. Still better than Battleforce 2000 being blown up by accident. |

The realism felt forced to me just because this rando SAW Viper is mowing down Joes left and right. And never again is any rando in GI Joe remotely this effective. Hell, NO character is this effective against named characters ever again, save for MAYBE Snake-Eyes in his final battle where he rolls through Billy, Baroness, Destro, Storm Shadow, and Cobra Commander plus had already gone through Firefly, Slice, and Dice if I recall.

Kirk Bozigian mentioned returning to the brand around that time, and noticing there hadn't been guns on the covers for a while. It turns out it was due to a mandate from Hasbro to appease moms. The deaths may have been an overcorrection on Bozigian's and Hama's part.

I would say about around the time when the Marvel comics run was cancelled. That point being where Cobra Commander activates some mind control Mcguffin that was built into all of his former followers teeth. Therefore rending all the shenanigans and battles against Destro and the Baroness being absolutely pointless and a waste of resources. Not only that but it "reset" Destro's and the Baroness's character development up to that point. That to me is where I would stop reading. Granted I haven't read any of the IDW stuff yet as I'm focusing on single issues of the Marvel stuff at the moment.
