I could be misremembering, but I believe Hama would have preferred to start fresh. He created a new origin for not only G.I. Joe but also Cobra Commander in those Origins issues (he confirmed it was meant to be CC). IDW later scraped that potential with the story the other writers ended up going with.

Because I think ARAH is not anti-American, but does villainize corrupt systems hiding behind bureaucracy. Even the parallels between ARAH and Vietnam are difficult in light of this past week. |

I liked a lot of the IDW stuff. Cobra I and Cobra II where great. IDW hinted at one point that Stormshadow would take on the mantle of Snake-eyes, which I though was great character development. (In never quite worked that Stormshadow would become a terrorist solely to track down his masters killer than then switch sides and become a soldier. IDW had that run where he and Snake-eyes were basically running counter terror ops on Cobra - but Stormshadow was more of an anti-hero than a hero. The idea that Snake-eye's death would make him change and become "good" that worked for me. Plus, disguised as Snake-Eyes the joes wouldn't know who he had been. He would have be accountable for his crimes - which I think would have added a dramatic tension.) But then after a soft reboot they just brought Snake-eyes back from the dead, made him a double agent of cobra (like ARAH Stormshadow) and made Gi Joe a reality show. It was bad then it got worse and worse and worse. |

When I read it, at the time I thought the Hama had assumed Origins was going to be the same as ARAH. A few years later I read ARAH and realized he had written something all together different.

I am in firm believer that stories should have a beginning, middle, and end.
. A good reboot, to me, is better than just dragging the same continuity beyond its death. Canon has its place with in a series but I don't by into idea of raging against every iteration of a reboot property just because it does not strictly adhere to the original concept. IDW had a good thing started and ran it into the ground. Then they restarted ARAH and did the same to that. |

I remember thinking Origins was some of Hama's best work. I dug it a lot. I can't believe that IDW didn't pick up anything of what he was putting down to use in the main series, but I guess it was because the COBRA series was proving so popular, they were willing to bend everything for Mike Costa.
I just googled Mike Costa to see what became of him, and I guess he writes for the TV show Lucifer now. So he went from writing for me to writing for my wife.

Quality over quantity. Give us fewer stories a year that have a beginning, a middle, and an end. I had posted something similar here: https://www.hisstank.com/forum/comic...arry-hama.html |

Agreed.

I had posted something similar here: https://www.hisstank.com/forum/comic...arry-hama.html From a corporate standpoint, they would show higher regard for the environment by producing less waste and consuming less paper. From a creative standpoint, the teams could work better together, having a definite end date in mind. Stories could be tighter knit, characters could be better developed (or tossed out in full), and the artwork could be finely crafted instead of rushing through an X-number of pages per day. If it's an issue of losing the nostalgia of covers, they could still be inserted into the GN as dividers for acts/issues. An idea so sensible mustn't be allowed into the open. |
