G.I. Joe Movie Adaptation #4 Review
In the last issue, Duke jumped after The Baroness and Storm Shadow and boarded their gunship. With Duke captured, he and The Baroness finally have time to catch up. We see some flashback sequences drawn in a neat way, enhanced by the changing of colors, going from light to dark. We find out why The Baroness, or Ana, bears a grudge against Duke. This plays an integral part in a revelation later on, that ties The Doctor to both Duke and Ana. It also provides for more intense battles, as the characters involved aren’t just fighting people of an opposing force, but former friends. This makes the story more interesting, and plants the roots for future battles, possibly in sequels. Meanwhile, Zartan undergoes a transformation that brings him close to how we usually “see” him…. The French are mad at the G.I. Joe team, and are kicked out, never to return again. Not only that, the team has been shut down and everyone has been called back, ordered to return to the PIT. This isn’t exactly the end of the Joe team, as Hawk didn’t specifically tell his team which route to take back to the PIT. Here we see a leader who has faith in his team, as he knows the Joes won’t let McCullen and crew get away, and knows the Joes are going after them, on their way to the PIT. Speaking of McCullen, we see him intentionally make Duke jealous by making out with The Baroness in front of him. Then he taunts him. McCullen comes off as a likeable villain and very true to the character we have always known as Destro. I think McCullen will steal the show in the movie, he has been the villain we have seen the most, and not too far off from how we usually see him. The Joes infiltrate the arctic M.A.R.S. base where Duke is being held. Here we see Rockslides, and a Night Raven. The Night Raven definitely looks more like the toy than the CGI model shown in the trailers, so the vehicles that we haven’t seen yet in the toyline may have been previewed in these movie adaptation comics! So if you’re interested in seeing how some of the vehicles might look like in the toyline, definitely pick these movie adaptation issues up. The man who has been running the show the entire time is introduced to Duke. The Doctor reveals who he is to Duke, with Duke shocked and bristling with questions. This is a huge revelation and probably held back until towards the end of the movie, for good reason. With warheads launching amuck, Ripcord launches in a Night Raven in an effort to shoot them down. Meanwhile, Duke needs to be saved, and before the Joes show up, The Baroness does, though it might not be for what you’d expect… Duke gets into a stand off with McCullen and The Doctor, over The Baroness. An explosion occurs, with McCullen suffering very severe burns to the face….which makes something necessary…. Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes face off in a battle which reveals a shocking revelation that gives hint to Storm Shadow’s true intentions. This is something that pays homage to the Classic G.I. Joe books(this can be seen in Classic G.I. Joe Vol. 3 which was released last month by IDW and might just prove that Larry Hama had more to do with the movie than people think. It’s a neat nod to fans that I didn’t see coming, and I find exciting. The Doctor helped McCullen “heal” his face, and the results are visibly familiar. A rather fitting name is also given to McCullen, meanwhile The Doctor dons a new mask, and changes his name as well…. With the mission a success, Ripcord and Duke are brought onboard as official members of the G.I. Joe team, and Cobra rises in political office… This issue is an exciting, and final installment in the movie adaptation series. It gives us a gist of what to expect in the movie, on August 7th. Questions that were asked in the previous issues were answered for the most part in this issue. This has the most bombshells of the all the issues, with some that no one saw coming at all, even if you’ve read some of the scripts floating around. All the confrontations that were building up came to a close here. The way it ended, almost makes a sequel necessary. Cobra has risen, and many things that happened towards the end are open for exploration in the future. It gives something for not just us to look forward to, but for the all new generation of G.I. Joe fans! |

Thx for the review. It really sounded like an exciting issue. It makes me believe I may enjoy the movie. At least a bit.

I'm very impressed with the movie adaptation, which surprised me a lot. Movie tie-ins in general always fail in my view (I thought the The IDW TRANSFORMERS film comics were awful), but the ROC book reads well and has a very traditional 'comic-feel' (whatever that is!) to it.
With the action greatly condensed for this comic (how quick was the Paris chase scene over in issue #3?), I can only imagine how slick this is all going to look on screen.
