I was working at TRU as a teen when that short packing shit started. It was genuine enough at first, say a random character that the toy company assumed would not sell as well. My first encounter was the female doctor on Star Trek Next Gen, by Playmates I think. Every greasy Trekie would try to get that figure. But it was a smart calculation on the part of Playmates. Adult colle surely wanted the figure but what child would put that on Santa's List? Later it became more nefarious. I remember, at one point Bona Fett was short packed, though cannot remember what line and if Hasbro had the license yet or if it was still Kenner. It’s a shitty thing to do.
Now a days I’m not sure if I should be mad at the toy companies or the poorly run retail chains for the distribution. Every big box mart that I go to has pathetically empty shelves and pegs. Assuming their stock rooms aren’t empty there is no excuse for it. Then the figures that I’d buy at inflated prices on the secondary market, pop up at discount chains. It’s maddening. Yeah I’m not a gamer, simply because I don’t have the time but wanted one of those to have old fashioned game nights with the entire family. I could never get one. Then I heard that Nintendo does that on purpose. Now you couldn’t pay me to take one. Screw em. Quote:
I hear ya on time, I'm really only a gamer at heart these days...
truthfully, I don't know that it was intentional, I think they may have underestimated the appeal for what was supposed to be a novelty. didn't hurt my feelings much, i have the original hardware, and if I didn't, i would have just emulated anyway, as that's all the classic really was. I'll tell you what though, I had a big shit eating grin thinking about all of the scalpers that bought every one they could find to try and flip for 250+, only to have nintendo wise up and bring it back to retail. Hope they saved the receipts! In the case of Nintendo, the Nintendo Classic shortage was actually due to underestimation of demand and a shortage of manufacturing capacity. Nintendo needed the capacity to build the Switch for the big debut, so they intentionally shorted Classic production, thinking they had made enough for what they saw as limited market demand. They were so wrong! To their credit, as soon as they could make more, they did. Last edited by SmokeBellew; 09-25-2019 at 10:34 PM.. |

Well, it always begins for very real fiscal reasons, but the lag time to make adjustments is a killer. In the case of toys, the waves are made up of "best guess" ratios as to what's going to sell and it's not always the manufacturer making the decision, as retailers have input as well. Walmart may say, "Hasbro, we dig that new line of Star Wars figures, but we're concerned with the Snoke ratio (or whatever). Star Wars nerds love villians, so add more Snoke!" And sometimes, there's just no telling what's gonna sell. History says nerds love troops, so in the Crait Luke/Death Star Gunner/Tank Commander wave, who would've thunk Crait Luke would be the big seller? The real problem is the whole system isn't set up for quick adjustments to ratios to capitalize on hot-sellers. It's become a one and done business where the retailer buys the wave and bases the decision to buy future waves off of the sales of that first wave. So, Hasbro has to wait until a future wave to supply the market with more of those hot-sellers...and that's only IF retailers give them the chance to make that future wave.
In some cases, again I wish I could remember the line, the year or which company, where Boba was short packed, it was maybe late late 90s? I always got the impression that some figures were deliberately shorted to keep fans returning to stores for THAT figure only to settle on multiple trips for other figures that may not have sold other wise. We all have the little kid inside of us and that kid never wants to return empty handed are hyping ourselves up to a new toy. But I may just be overthinking it and am perhaps being conspiratorial. In keeping in line with the thread I finally found some time to read past the old Marvel run of my IDW trades, and started the IDW continuation where Larry was still writing. Man it’s refreshing to read a new (relatively) comic from an old school guy. I was afraid I’d hate it but the first 12 issues were true to the old run. Lots of fun. The art is very good but the story telling is a bit weak, visually.

Yeah that is pretty much what I assumed. Agree about Crait Luke. WTF? If so many folks aren’t happy with TLJ (I’m not) why buy the most agregis part of the film? Unless people want old, fit Luke to use in their own EU? I guess Luke sells no matter what? Maybe a Disney should pay closer attention.
