When I was a kid in the 80s I felt that the clientele in a comic shop were largely regular guys who were just into comics, which a rare exception of the sort of cartoon character looser. Now, when I walk into a comic shop, not only do I not find anything worth buying but I feel like the only employable person in the room (and that includes the employees). I think the comic companies just all need to stop what they are doing, clean house, and just go back to making fun and exciting stories. That’s what all of these movies and video games are based on. I think comics take a back seat to video games and movies because parents can’t use comics as subjugated to keep their kids drooling for hours on end. I doubt most of your movie going audience or the gaming community could get through Dostoyevsky either.

I’ll agree with you 1,000% on that. But I’m not sure how many “nerds” out there are genuine or if the new pop culture popularity has just attracted the obnoxious trend jumpers that have always plagued our scocitey. Hippies, Yuppies, Hipsters, they have always been here, now they are just in our house.

I doubt most of your movie going audience or the gaming community could get through Dostoyevsky either. They do have an increasingly important initiative of representing reality in their films, ie. actually reflecting real-life (colorful faces, strong women, LGBTQ...etc and all), but when they're making a kid's movie, they leave sexuality, sex, politics, gratuitous violence and the like out of it. Kids don't need to be bothered by that stuff yet. You may see a lesbian couple dropping their child off at daycare, but that's a rare occurrence, in the background and not anywhere near a central theme of the flick. And they certainly don't get into sexual aspects of the couple. In such cases, it's an acknowledgement of modern reality and an effort to normalize seeing such reality in major Hollywood films, but they aren't about to get preachy or highlight it or use it to push an agenda on young kids...other than more kid-oriented messages, such as respect & kindness towards animals and fellow humans. Even the little adult commentary nods and winks you find in Pixar movies especially aren't anything that detract from the story for the kids. Most of it goes unnoticed by the kiddos and it's just there to keep the parents interested. That's why I find the LGBTQ community's desire for Elsa to be a lesbian a bit short-sighted and unrealistic. The target audience for Frozen aren't yet dealing with puberty, let alone confusing questions of sexual identity. There is a time and place for such representation, and a movie for young children ain't it. Anyway, I suspect comics would be read by children if they were actually made for children. |

I think you're right. For example, if they want to get the kids interested in comics again, it's probably best to just concentrate on action stories and not even dick about with "adult" themes like sexuality and politics. Disney is a good model here, believe it or not.

Honestly the way Marvel is lately I don’t want GI Joe to get any more limp dick than it already has become under IDW.
But back to my initial question, does anyone know if IDW lost the rights to publish the Marvel run? Their Classics reprint Vol 15 is going for a couple hundred. These are trade paperbacks not periodicals, if they retained the rights they’d do well to reprint some more. Their Transformers Vol 2 is equally fetching insane prices for a reprint book.

that's a pretty common tactic these days, "false scarcity". any gamer and most non gamers will remember the NES classic fiasco, though Nintendo did wisely re release, which salted up a whole shitload of scummy scalpers.

Now a days I’m not sure if I should be mad at the toy companies or the poorly run retail chains for the distribution. Every big box mart that I go to has pathetically empty shelves and pegs. Assuming their stock rooms aren’t empty there is no excuse for it. Then the figures that I’d buy at inflated prices on the secondary market, pop up at discount chains. It’s maddening. Yeah I’m not a gamer, simply because I don’t have the time but wanted one of those to have old fashioned game nights with the entire family. I could never get one. Then I heard that Nintendo does that on purpose. Now you couldn’t pay me to take one. Screw em.

I was working at TRU as a teen when that short packing shit started. It was genuine enough at first, say a random character that the toy company assumed would not sell as well. My first encounter was the female doctor on Star Trek Next Gen, by Playmates I think. Every greasy Trekie would try to get that figure. But it was a smart calculation on the part of Playmates. Adult colle surely wanted the figure but what child would put that on Santa's List? Later it became more nefarious. I remember, at one point Bona Fett was short packed, though cannot remember what line and if Hasbro had the license yet or if it was still Kenner. It’s a shitty thing to do.

Screw em. truthfully, I don't know that it was intentional, I think they may have underestimated the appeal for what was supposed to be a novelty. didn't hurt my feelings much, i have the original hardware, and if I didn't, i would have just emulated anyway, as that's all the classic really was. I'll tell you what though, I had a big shit eating grin thinking about all of the scalpers that bought every one they could find to try and flip for 250+, only to have nintendo wise up and bring it back to retail. Hope they saved the receipts!
