Hey guys, I'm planning on rereading the original continuity this fall, but I want to do it in an order that places events chronologically. I'm not as concerned with flashbacks. But when the entire issue takes place in a previous time, I'd like to take note of that.
Can you all help me assemble a list of those out-of-order issues and when they should take place? (Or direct me to a place that has this order already?) And weren't there Special Missions & Yearbooks whose stories tied in directly with the main line? Thanks yall. ---------------------------------------------------------- Obviously, I'd read all the Declassifieds first. In between Marvel & Image comes Frontline #1-4 and the first Master & Apprentice. When does the second Master & Apprentice take place? Any others I'm forgetting? |

When I bound my Joe hardcovers, I made a map of the order I'd want to read the books in so I'd know how to bind them. I don't have everything in chronological order, but I do have the crossover issues in the right places.
The most important issues that crossover into the main marvel series are Yearbook 3, special missions 6, & special missions 26. Collectedcomics.com - Collected Comics Gallery, FAQ, and Info site! |

Hmmm, according to GI Joe Wiki, Master & Apprentice 2 also takes place between Marvel & Image/DD.

The wiki is wrong. While flashbacks in M&A2 deal with the era just after M&A1, the first scene in the series has Billy, Storm Shadow, and Junko hanging together in the aftermath of Storm Shadow's final brainwashing by Cobra. The state of the Red Ninjas in the series is a follow-up to their encounter with Snake-Eyes in DDP #27. M&A2 continuity is wonky and really doesn't fit where it's supposed to. We're meant to understand that Cobra Commander arrives at the end of Issue #1, sends the Night Creepers after Stormy, then leaves to take part in the main series (where Mindbender activates the Tempest and Blackout becomes the Commander's bodyguard) only to be taken out by the Red Shadows. The rest of the series might take place after the Red Shadows arc, since Kamakura (who is by Hawk's side from Issue #35-41) is paired with Snake-Eyes in M&A2 #3. Their reunion doesn't occur until the Red Shadows arc that ended DDP's main series. As for reading the Marvel series there aren't that many points where reading order trumps release order. The biggest snafu occurs in the 50s, where the Transformers crossover and Yearbook stuff makes for a topsy-turvy reading experience. Easy answer: Snake-Eyes Declassified Zartan: Declassified G.I.Joe Declassified (minus epilogue) Scarlett Declassified Marvel #1 (Op: Lady Doomsday) G.I.Joe Declassified Epilogue Marvel #1 (Hot Potato) - #20 Silent Prelude (from Snake-Eyes Declassified TPB) Marvel #21-36 Yearbook #2 Marvel #37-50 Marvel 52 (pgs 1-5) Marvel 51 Marvel 52 (pgs 5-23) Transformers Crossover #1, 2 (Commander & Destro still active) Marvel #53 - 56 Yearbook #3 Transformers Crossover #3, 4 (Snake-Eyes & Mindbender post YB3) Special Missions #1-5 Marvel #57-61 Special Missions #6 Marvel #62, 63 Special Missions #7 Marvel #64-71 Yearbook #4 Special Mission #8-14 Marvel #72-78 Special Missions #15-19 (Happen concurrently with Civil War) Marvel #79-86 Special Missions #20-23, 25 (skip #24 for all that's Holy) Marvel #87-91 Special Missions #26 Marvel #92 Special Missions #27, 28 Marvel #93 -155 (143 happens concurrently with Issue 135, but there's no space in the narrative to switch over. It's best left to read in it's published order) Frontlines #1-4 (The Mission that Never Was) Frontlines #9, 10 (Zanya origin) Master & Apprentice DDP #5 DDP#1-9 Frontline #5-8 DDP #10-16 Frontlines 11-17 DDP #17-40 (there's some overlap with M&A II) Master & Apprentice II #1, 2 pg 10 DDP #41-43 Master & Apprentice #2-4 The Hunt for Cobra Commander America's Elite #0-5 AE #5,6 - Family Ties (occurs during first arc) Special Missions: Manhattan (occurs during first arc) AE #6-12 Special Missions: Tokyo, Antarctica AE#13-18 Special Missions: The Enemy "The Grading Curve" AE #19, 20 Special Missions: Brazil AE #21-36 Last edited by straightedge; 08-28-2009 at 04:34 PM.. |

It was my understanding that the original Joe/TF mini was not considered in continuity.

The only part of the Crossover stuff I'd ignore are the Transformers G2 appearances of G.I.Joe. Issue #2, which depicts the Joes and Hotspot chasing Cobra while Spike and Skydive infiltrate the Ark and rescue Dr. Biggles-Jones directly contradicts the end of Issue #142, where Megatron leaves Earth orbit for Cybertron, and Issue #144, where the Joes are extracted from Millville, *without* Biggles-Jones, and Scarlett is fast-tracked to Washington because the brass want answers that Dr. B-J isn't around to give. It's fairly obvious that Larry fulfilled his part of the G2 crossover obligation, then gave it no more thought. What Furman did in G2 does not factor into the Joe continuity. |

No problem. Sorry I was so late to the game, but definitely glad I could help.
I was asleep last night at work (on my break) when my eyes popped open, and I realized I hadn't included Yearbook #4 in this list. Yes, I sometimes dream about GIJoe, but rarely is is a threeway with Scarlett and Cover Girl. :( Editing that now. |
