I haven't read them yet (planning to!), but they don't seem as hated as much as the toys.
That or nobody actually read them. First issue had a GREAT cover As far as Joe comics: the publisher doesn't matter. What does matter is who writes the comic and how they approach Joe. If they got a writer that approached Joe the same as IDW, the comic would still be as dull as IDW's comic is now.

If Dark Horse published G.I. Joe, then we'd have G.I. Joe comics published by Dark Horse.
And chances, judging by Dark Horse's publishing history, they would release a bunch of mini-series instead of an ongoing.

I was at the 1995 San Diego Comic Con, where Dark Horse did some promotion for the new GI Joe series. They had one of those "skinny delivery vans" that drove around downtown with a big advertisement for GI Joe on it. With the slogan: "There's a new Joe in town...and he's riding a Dark Horse" (or something like that).
I hounded their booth for the two days I was there, thinking I could score some free crap...errr, promotional schwag, but I didn't see anything. They were already at capacity promoting their other stuff. Which is fine, from a business and marketing viewpoint. I think the official release of their GI Joe wasn't until October '95 or so. My knock on Dark Horse has always been that they're too tied up in the novelty of their licensed tie-ins and don't seem to view things as a big picture. "We've got Aliens! We've got Predator! We've got Star Wars!" Like a previous poster mentioned, they end up releasing countless mini-series. Their marketing was based on getting someone to pick up their comics because the reader liked the licensed property--- not because the reader was into the comics or the story that was being presented. At least in the 90's, that seemed to be their MO.

Dark Horse put out a four issue limited series in the mid-nineties - with plans to go ongoing if sales were good. Unfortunately, it was canceled after two issues. There was a mysterious character in DC (presumably Snake-Eyes), that seemed promising - but the rest of it wasn’t any good at all.
