Story
All I can say is...Wow. Not unexpected in the least, but I had held out some small hope, especially when Disney renewed Hasbro's license through the sequel films. More than anything that's come from the Disney/Lucasfilm merger, this truly feels like the end of an era. Dark Horse Comics has been a mainstay in my leisure reading for over 20 years, all the way from Dark Empire and Tales of the Jedi until now. I have generally found DHC to be without a doubt the most consistent provider of quality EU material. Sure there were the occasional stinkers, or screw-ups borne from a constantly-shuffling continuity, but by and large they've rarely failed to entertain me, and clearly approached the license with care and consideration. They will be sorely missed, and I can only hope that many of their contributions to the Expanded Universe will not be forgotten or casually discarded in the rush to embrace the new, and that even if the "old" EU is discarded as many fear may occur, that the vast body of material they have created will not be completely lost to future readers. By the same token... One of my earliest and fondest childhood memories is my father reading me "The Stenax Shuffle" when I was about four or five years old. I've been a lifelong comic reader and Marvel's Star Wars comics were a mainstay of my childhood that I practically taught myself to read with. I've still got that copy of "The Stenax Shuffle" tucked away in a polybag despite having long since lost its' cover completely and the book having yellowed and faded from age. I think many people hold out some small (or some great) hope that the arrival of the Disney Star Wars era will be something of a renaissance for this franchise that I and millions of others love so much. As much as I loved Dark Horse, and as much as I know the Marvel of today isn't the Marvel of yesteryear...Star Wars being at Marvel still feels right to me. I've heard good things about their more recent licensed fare (Stephen King's Dark Tower most notably) and so I am certainly interested to see where they may venture next. Perhaps I'm an optimist, but I think it could be something pretty special. Only time will tell.... |

The only thing I'm really concerned about is the established history of some of the characters that Dark Horse created that became part of the official canon (Ki Ali Mundi for example) and what they added to the EU.
How does that carry over to the Marvel-SW going forward? As for the stories themselves, I need to know who Marvel will have involved. But yeah, it is the end of an era. Dark Horse will lose a big chunk of their publishing.

From my understanding, and from the bits and pieces I've read on the web, the status of the "Old" EU basically goes like this:
Anything published after January 1, 2015 will be "official" canon until specifically stated or proven otherwise. Also included in the "official" canon are: All 6 current movies and the future films, as well as the Clone Wars and Rebels animated series. For everything else published before January 1, 2015: Nothing is canon unless or until Disney says it is. Basically, they reserve the right to keep or discard whatever they want. Or to put it more clearly: Basically the entire EU just got relegated to what used to be (IIRC) "S" Canon - Not Canon until another story references it, but elements of those stories may be used...like the old Marvel Comics. On the plus side, it seems like Disney is dumping the "canon levels" business and simply declaring that officially published material IS canon...but only for the stuff that gets published after they have full control. It's really freakin' sad, but it makes sense...Disney wants a clean slate. It's not "officially" a reboot...I suspect we'll see a lot of elements of "old" EU than you might expect, and that certain things will get "Canon-ized" very quickly (Especially Old Republic stuff)...but I'm betting the post-RotJ and movie-era EU stuff will all basically be trashed in favor of the new movies. In some ways that's good (No Yuuzhan Vong) and in others its not so good (No "Legacy" era, no Thrawn trilogy, etc...) |

It really is the best way to do it. It scraps a TON of good stories (both novels and comics), but does make it easier to start fresh and with new movies and prequel (Rebels) coming anyways that would probably contradict stuff already established, starting fresh is the way to go.

I hope they keep Dengar's wedding part of the canon!

I don't think we can even speculate on what will be kept until we know what the next movie is. That will go a long ways towards shaping the future.

This makes me sad.....the 90's-2000's Dark Horse stuff was a huge part of my teenage years. So much Star Wars expanded universe goodness. :(

I've long suspected the next batch of films will keel haul huge swaths of the EU to begin with, so seeing Marvel take over it wouldn't surprise me to see the EU "rebooted".
But like DDP and IDW with GI Joe, it doesn't "erase" the old stories, and the good stuff will find a life even if no longer a "core canon".

Right, it's not like the Zahn novels cease to exist (or new ones won't necessarily be made in the "Zahn-verse").
