So I finally scored several of the Classic Collection Trades, and I was wondering if anyone had input on the reading order. Specifically where the Special Missions an Yearbook teades should be placed.
I know the special Missions originally ran parallel to the main title, but I don't want to have to Lternate back in forth between two trades, of that makes sense. Also, I would prefers not to split up a continuing arc that spans two trades by putting a special missions book in between them. I know this topic gas been addressed with the individual comics but if anyone can help me on where the special mission and yearbook trades should go to make tbs most sense, it'd be appreciated. |

Good question. Found this with a Google search. Looks like this guy came up with an order back in '08 that includes modern runs as well as ARAH, Yearbook and special Missions releases.
G.I. Joe 26 year continuity, in chronological reading order.

There are only 2, maybe 3 Special Missions issues that have any effect on the Main Marvel continuity. Special Missions 6 to issue 62,63 come to mind.
Or check the link above.

So then special missions volume 1 should be read before classics volume 7 and probably after volume six. Also don't special missions 7 and 8 go together as a two part?

Correction. Special missions 14 and 15 go together and link to 18 and 19. So special missions volumes 2 and 3 should be read consecutively.
So: Classics volume 1 Classics volume 2 Classics volume 3 Classics volume 4 Classics volume 5 Classics volume 6 Special missions volume 1 Classics volume 7 And then should it go classics volume 8, SM 2, SM 3, Classics volume 9? |

the Special Missions trades tell you which month they were published in, alongside which issue of the main title was published that month.
the main thing with the yearbooks is to read the one with the Oktober Guard in Afghanistan before SM #1 (Brekhov mentions it in dialogue) and to read YB #3 before the Cobra Civil War arc (as that reveals where the Joes got the Mamba from) |

Yearbook #2 has the Oktober Guard in Afghanistan. YB 4 has the Joes capturing the Mamba. YB 3 is the silent one, with SE, SS and Scarlett.

Yearbook 3 explains how Snake Eyes was saved from capture in issue 55-56.
Special Missions 7 was also connected to the first few pages of issue 79. SM 14, 15 explain why Snake Eyes and Scarlett (and others) weren't participants in the Cobra Civil War. SM 16 references issue 73 and Star Viper, then leads to events in issue 81. Yearbook 4 explains how they got the Mamba for the Cobra Civil War. SM 26 leads to events in issue 92. Issue 145 makes a brief reference to SM 13. So I guess I'll make it easy: I think this is correct. 1-56 Yearbook 3 57-61 Special Missions 6 62-72 Yearbook 4 73-78 Special Missions 7 (can be read at any point before 79) Special Missions 13 79-80 Special Missions 16 81-91 Special Missions 26 92-145 (mentions events in SM 13) 146-155 The Special Missions really grew on me as an adult, more so than when I was a kid. Even though they don't all connect to the main line, they are essential reading, in my opinion. SM 8 is a great Low Light issue. SM 4 is a great Lifeline issue. SM 23 is a great Scoop issue.

"Special Missions #14-18" take place concurrently with the main series. The events of each title do not overlap, but it explains why Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, Chuckles and Iceberg are not with the team during the "Cobra Civil War".
I have what I feel is the chronological order of reading on my Crappy Website, below.

I really like your website actually. Just bookmarked it. However my dilemma is having the novel of yearbooks so I can't split it up.
Also, you rated issues 2 and 4 too low and. 3 too high. I liked Winfield and Kwinn's intro. Both 4-stars in my book while the Trojan horse was too advanced for cobra's tech at the time. I like finding people so versed in the comics though. |
