I have just recently entered the comic book reading scene. I was hoping for some recommendations on where would be a good place to start dipping my toe into the G.I. Joe comics. I would probably be more into reading newer stuff (I don't know what the older comics were like, but I can't stand campy comics and it would have to be relatively cheap and easy to obtain). I would also prefer something with a pretty contained story (again, don't want to make a long term monetary commitment to major ongoing series). Also if anyone has any recommendations on good Transformers comics along similar guidelines, I'd appreciate that as well.

Try reading the original Special Missions comics. Not campy, typically self-contained stories that often have the Joes fighting other enemies besides Cobra.

Good time to jump in. The IDW-verse has relaunched, basically started the new season, with first issues of the three titles: G.I. Joe, Joe: Special Missions and The Cobra Files.
They are basically continuations of the previous seasons/volumes, but are relatively easy to pick up. Then can go back and start in on the trade paperbacks. The ARAH series, a continuation of the old Marvel, can be picked up at 155 1/2 pretty easily, but we're on 190 now, so.... But IDW is good with releasing trade paperbacks, so can be relatively easy to catch up.

It definately had it's campy moments, especially towards the end.
The Firefly/Red Ninja Pyramid of Doom comes to mind...

Well Marvel was not nearly as serious as some fans make it out to be. I got tired of people complaining that Rise of Cobra wasn't "real" like the comics. Oh yeah, SEA Legs are "real," a giant robot in the Pit is "real," etc.
I'd really suggest reading the Marvel series so you can understand some of the mythos of the GIJoe universe, but you probably already have knowledge of some of the basic stories, so an issue like Silent Interlude may not be as much as a revelation as it was to us old farts who were kids in the 80s. I'm currently reading the IDW reboot which the issue about Duke was great, but so far the series is slow going. Jason |
