Hey Tankers. I just have a couple quick ? About the marvel joe comics. I've never read them growing up and I was able to come across all of them on a disk to read on my ipad. First ? I believe I have figured out is the Character Sparks especially as of late with a few customs of HER have been seen on the forum. I'd love more of an elaboration or background if anyone knows about Sparks and second ?... There is a pilot who is seen throughout the run and no one can ever remember his name... Did I miss out on his name or just who he is by trying to fly through these comics? Some help would be appreciated. And finally. I read the run straight thru save a few more till I'm actually done, I didn't read special missions yet, or the yearbooks, or the 'trans vs. Joes' or european missions. I'm sure they fall in in certain spots thru the run but maybe if anyone has quick insight to where they fall in, it would help me put the entire story together better. Thanks ps sunbow was my only knowledge of gi joe facts growing up... Comics took me to a whole new level lol.

Ghost Rider was the name of the pilot no one could remember... it was an inside joke of Larry Hama because Marvel already had a character named Ghost Rider... plus he piloted the stealth, invisible to radar, so it was a double entendre.
Sparks? Do you mean Shooter? The Yearbooks did play into the regular series a bit, mostly issues 3 and 4. Yearbook issue three takes place shortly after issue 56. Explains how Snake Eyes was rescued. Yearbook 4 explains how the Joes got the Mamba they used to drop off the advanced recon team during the Cobra Civil war. The Special Missions had a few crossovers too, most notably issue 6, explained how Outback got out of Russia while Stalker, Quick Kick and Snow Job were captured around issues 61-67 Last edited by Xerofall; 05-04-2013 at 06:00 PM.. |

My mistake. Yes SHOOTER is who I meant. Who's sparks Then? Lol I'm all jacked up. That's what I get for reading all the issues one right after the other. Things don't get absorbed.

Sparks was the communications person, similar to Breaker and Dial Tone on the Sunbow cartoons.

The special missions and yearbooks are essential as they were written by Hama also, but the transformers and the European missions are just comics.

Shooter came about because of another inside joke. In the very first issue of the Marvel comics there was a control panel with the names and pictures of active joes. One was named Shooter and was obscured by a hand. The editor in chief at Marvel was named Jim Shooter.
Later on, DDP I think, turned Shooter into a sniper and gave her a little back story. |

BTW--I HIGHLY recommend Joe Declassified (maybe you have it, as you mentioned Shooter), written by Hama. And, if you don't mind the current SE oversaturation, SE Declassified is the definitive collection of his storyline + some, IMO. It takes Hama's work and adds a bit more background, filling in some holes. I love it.

Sparks and Breaker did co-exist in the cartoon.
