Ok, so I've been rereading the Marvel run and when I came to issue 88, I had to stop and flip to the front to see who was responsible for doing the pencils because this issue just really stood out as one of the worst drawn comics I have encountered. I usually don't pay attention to the artists but I have always noticed when character drawings start to change in style or form, but this was the most noticeable. The artist was Tony Salmons and he did some other issues besides this one--I didn't count how many--but the poorly drawn faces really stood out in issue 88. I just couldn't get over how bad they were.
So I was wondering whom everyone thought was the worst Pencilist during the Marvel run? Or which comic was the most poorly drawn? |

I'm not that familiar with the comics, but whoever drew the one that came with Torch & Ripper sucks the worst.

I agree, I thought I was the only one that hated his work. The run between #88-93 was horrible(so bad I dont remember his name, Tony something), other than that I was happy with the art, Herb Trimpe and Ron Wagner being my favorites, but enjoying the rest as well

Tony Salmons was fine -- he just needed a better inker. His linework had a tendency to vanish during the printing process, which made for very choppy-looking art. But he had a sort of exaggerated cartooning style reminiscent of Michael Golden that I like more as I get older.
The run of generic, one-shot, McFarlane-inspired pencillers in the comic's final year is the collective worst (Snake-Eyes should never be as buff as an X-man), although Frank Springer's run is a close second. |

I liked the Todd McFarlane art. It was cartoony, but different. I guess I just don't wanna jump on the anti-McFarlane bandwagon. His work was very fun back in those days.
But, since this thread is about crappy art, while Tony Salmons was pretty bad, the worst was Phil Gosier. He did the art at the end of the series. It was way too cartoony and plain and weak. It was a sad end to the series, that had such solid artwork earlier on, especially Rod Whigham's stuff. I'm sure there were other bad artists, but Gosier stood out to me, seeing how low the comic had sunk. Last edited by BCDX97; 01-10-2009 at 05:20 PM.. |

Well, when I was originally reading the book, I thought that Frank springer was pretty bad-- now that I'm older, looking at those same issues again, I find that I've actually developed an appreciation for his work. I recommend any fans of his to track down The Adventures of Phoebe Zeitgeist, a book he did with Michael O'Donoghue at the tail end of the sixties. A fun, slightly dirty little book.
I stopped reading the series at around issue 75 or so, but some of the later artists I've seen were really bad, in that bad-artists-of-90's sort of way that drove me from comics for years. I'm thinking specifically of the issue that came with the Ace/Wild Weasel two pack-- no offense to the artist, who was probably on a tight deadline or something, but that book was absolutely terrible looking. Real crappola. Oh, and 350th post for me, woot! |
