o.k., i just starting collecting the old marvel comics, and i have noticed the difference in some of the covers where the barcode is. tell me if i am right:
white spiderman head=first print barcode=first print (newsstand) black spiderman head=second print when were the second print issues produced, and are they a lot less valuable than the first print issues? thanks, |

I am not being negative, but the first printing are not really worth all that much, so second is no better. I had a ton of vintage Spiderman books that I thank God I unloaded when the first movie came out. I do not know why the comic market took such a dive, back in the early 90s there were shops on every corner. I personally believe that video games and Ebay are to blame. If you had a book worth a few hundred dollars back in the day, you could find someone to buy it, now you look that same book up on ebay and 30 idiots are selling the same book and now there going considerable less. It is a good time for collectors to catch up on the stuff they are missing, I think golden age stuff will retain its value but silver to present in taking a beating.

Some of the second prints were made a few months after the first release and some prints came a year after the initial release. The value is less for a second print issue but in some circumstances, the second print might command more due to a lower print run. *I have only seen this in more popular titles* and not in the Joe run. So I would imagine that the first issue run commands a higher price than a second print run

To a great extent your head assumption is correct, but not guaranteed. The only way to be sure is to check the indicia. In general, second printings and beyond are much less valuable/collectible than first prints. Many were printed within a week to a month after the first print because of continued demand from fans/comic shops for additional copies of extremely popular issues. I believe the first Devil's Due issue of Joe went through three printings, but the covers changed each time, they didn't just add "Second printing" to the indicia, which can make the additional printings more desirable for many collectors.

So in other words look inside the comic book credits and see if they are 1st or 2nd print. Right?

Vader, lol I lived through it also, which is why I also own 8 first edition X-Force comic books. Remember that? OOO Xforce 1... OMG 4 or 5 different cards in each new first issue.
The thing to remember and its the same with any collection is that comic books and collectibles are only worth what people will pay for them. If you're trying to collect comics to make a profit you will need to rewind time back to the 90s.

Your right on the whole what people will pay comment. I am working on an Uncanny run and I tell you, I have picked up some gem issues very cheap. |

I've gotten all the original Joe marvel run. I've gotten some from ebay and other various comic shops. I bought them regardless of print run. I wanted them to have and to read all the old comics I never did when I was younger. Zero said it best tho, if you're worried about prices and selling down the road, its only worth a buttload of cash to someone willing to give you a buttload of cash. So if youre buying them to have and read for your own personal fun, dont stress over which print youre getting. If youre buying for investment purposes, might not be worth paying alot for issues. You might not get a huge return on them. The final issue #155 tho, is still pretty pricey to get your hands on. Its alot more expensive than when I got it a few years ago. Just depends on the demand my friend!
