I agree with the member who stated that the comics were looked down upon because they are associated with toys/cartoons. That's the main reason I stay away from most comic adaptations of cartoon series. For example I would rather read the main Teen Titans book, than a comic adaptation of a random Teen Titans episode from cartoon network. Why? It's because I tend to think adaptations like that are usually watered down.
The reason I am glad IDW is going forth with a new direction for G.I. Joe, is because they are no longer bound by Hasbro to write books that will sell toys. I do like the idea of moving stories forward by grounding events in reality, however I did not like how DDP simply killed off some characters without making a lot of their deaths significant. I read in a Marvel interview sometime back, a writer stated that a good death is written well when the character who dies, means more dead than alive. I think the character in question was Karen Page, I could be wrong, but I know for sure if it wasn't her, it was someone in the Daredevil books. In WWIII, Cobra Commander kills Billy, some members of Cobra see the corpse, are shocked for a bit, then simply walk on. What the hell? Lady Jaye's death only served to give Joe Casey a reason to write Flint as a raging lunatic for a few issues. It didn't really make the Red Shadows seem anymore dangerous, they weren't really prominent afterwards. Some of the events, in which rivalries came full circle were not even given emphasis in the last issue of WWIII. I think if the IDW stories do well and have great substance, they will gain respect amongst collectors, however it will be hard for the comics to shake off the shadow of their toy origins. |

I don't feel any snobbery towards G.I.Joe at my comic shop. The owner is very laid back and not your typical snobby comic book geek. Before he started pulling them for me, I might forget and there wouldn't be any Joe comics left a week later, so somebody else around here buys them.
Marvel G.I.Joe #11 got me hooked on comics. Correction: the commercial for Marvel G.I.Joe #11 got me to buy #11. Then I got hooked on comics. I started with just G.I.Joe then Marvel Star Wars, and I would just pick them up in Wal-Mart or convenience stores. Then I discovered the comic book store. A whole store with nothing but comics! As a teenager in the late 80's and early 90's I was spending about $30 a week on comics. That was a lot back then. Mostly all X-Men titles with multiple covers and Image comics. Now the circle is complete. I only buy G.I.Joe comics. I will pick up the occasional Star Wars TPB now and then, and I like the Ultimates as well.
