Before I dive into my favorite issues of all time, let me give you some background on me. I was growing up over in South East Asia when I was in the early 1980s, and was only able to get American toys when we came back to the states each summer, so my access to Gi Joe toys and comics was limited. During two different summers, I picked up two issues of Marvel's GI Joe (they both might have been in an airport too) which not only set the standard for me. Once I moved back to the states I was able to pick up everything I missed, but few issues measured up to the first two I ever read.
#16 - When Cobra attacks DC and the Treasury Building, and the Baroness gets caught in an explosion. Everything from the art (which was better than the issues before and after), to the story, the character introductions, the vehicles, etc was just awesome for me. It involved the whole GI Joe team and all of the main Cobra characters, and I even liked Scarface. Looking back, I think it's still the best issue until #21, and later I thought most of the missions before #16 were dissappointing. The next issue I got was #28 - Gi Joes and the WHALE vs Zartan's robot army and the Rattlers. Not really seeing or knowing anything about Zartan, I was disappointed in him not doing anything but running away in the beginning of the issue, but the rest of the issue is just amazing. I am from Miami, and loved to see the Everglades in the story. I loved the WHALE, which I eventually got as a toy (and it became my favorite toy), and loved the Rattlers. Firefly and Wild Weasel have also been favorites of mine since then, and of course I loved Duke. There was some comedy in the issue too, and it was really the last time we saw the original joes on a meanful mission on their own (Steeler, Clutch, Breaker in the Mobat), and the scene where Roadblock pics up the .50 cals so Deep Six can shoot Destro's Rattler is classic. I was impressed with other issues and plots, like when the Joes captured Cobra Commander #23, and when the Joes attacked Springfield, and of course consider #21 one of the most amazing comics written of all time, but as far as what defined GI Joe for me, issues #16 and #28 did it for me. I eventually dropped following the comic around the time the Cobra Civil War was over as it just got dumb to me, so I missed out on half of the life of the comic. So I was wondering what your favorite issues were. . . |
