Indeed, and I think it's a bit sad that it's come to this. But the other writers just can't touch Hama in terms of writing Joe. I haven't seen any other writer do Joe like the characters are actually members of a special anti-terrorist unit, and not just a bunch of random superheroes or guys that do what the script asks them to (Hama actually touches that last subject in that Joe-mind interview).
The timeline isn't a problem, since like Hama said in the interview, Joe exists in it's own universe. There are countries like Borovia and Sierra Gordo around, so obviously it's not exactly the same as 'our' universe. In the Joe-world it's ok if Vietnam happened just a couple of years before cellphones. Yeah, I don't think Hasbro would even bother with the comics if there hadn't been eager publishers looking to license them. Loved this part, because he's basically saying the Marvel-fans are smarter than the Sunbow-fans. This is the important question. Did we really need this limited series at all? All the juicy bits had already been revealed, and all a series like this can do is take away the last few remaining aspects of the character by showing what he was like as a snot-nosed teenager. The great part about Snake-Eyes (or, say, Wolverine) was the mystery, but there had to be some revelations about his history because it gets frustrating if all you get is one endless tease after another. But their popularity works against them in the end, as more and more stories reveal more and more tidbits until suddenly you know everything down to which color undies they have and which finger they pick their noses with. It's funny you guys are mentioning Captain America, since he was originally a lot more interesting than he turned out later. In the 40s he was a no-nonsense superhero who wasn't afraid to take down the enemies of America the hard way. This culminated in the 50s commie-smasher version, until in the 60s he turned into the boyscout we know today. I'm a bit miffed they retconned the commie-smasher, because that's the way I think the character should be. |
