So the follow up to the fantastic #167 was released today. In many respects it delivered the goods, and was a worthy follow up, but in one aspect in particular it fell horribly short.
In issue 164, released earlier this year, there was a glaring continuity issue that had many Joe fans scratching their head. Sneak Peek, a long dead character, miraculously reappears for no particular reason. It had absolutely nothing to do with the plot of the issue and he could easily have been replaced with say, Tunnel Rat. Which made it quite obvious that it was an error on the part of Larry Hama. Personally, I didn't think it was the biggest deal in the world, after writing over 200+ comics I'm sure he can't remember every little detail, but I would think at least having a list of dead characters handy may be a good reference point while writing. I figured if the issue ever went in to reprint or trade they could also just redraw Sneak Peek as a new character in the few panels he appeared and the issue would be resolved... Then I read #168 today. Sometimes when we make a mistake in life, or tell a lie, it's simply better to admit your fault and move past it, because if you don't things spiral out of control. Never has this been more true in the pages of G.I. Joe than today. So we see Dusty enter a room where Sneak Peek is eating lunch, Dusty approaches him, and this is the dialogue that follows: "D:Sneak Peak, I come back from a long leave and you're back. No explanations. No questions. I was the one who told your mom you were dead, don't you owe me an explanation? SP: If I told you, I'd have to kill you. D: Were you undercover all this time? Is it an ongoing operation? How could you put your family and friends though this? SP: I'm sorry, Dusty, you don't have a need to know." Here's the problem (and it's a big one) in issue 113 (when Sneak Peek is killed) Dusty sees him get SHOT TO DEATH right in front of his eyes, then Dusty PICKS UP HIS DEAD BODY and CARRIES HIM all the way home, where Stretcher tells him "Dusty! This man is dead! He's been dead for hours! You carried him all the way back here?" This begs the question...Is Dusty retarded? In this issue, #168 Dusty claims to have gone on leave and upon his return Sneak Peek is back, and he asks him if he's undercover. DUSTY SAW SNEAK PEEK DIE, CARRIED HIS DEAD BODY FOR HOURS, AND HAD STRETCHER CONFIRM HE WAS DEAD! Why did they even bring this back up, it's like their just digging the hole deeper for themselves! The only even remotely logical explanation I could think of was that "Sneak Peek" was actually Zartan in disguise, but that still doesn't explanation Dusty's apparent memory retention issues as he saw him die! This book really has been pretty good, and I don't want to go too hard on it, because I'm thrilled that it's still ongoing, but this is just absurd. Why didn't they just admit they made a mistake, correct it in future prints, and move on. Now it's just getting stupid. Thoughts? Opinions? I'll give a no-prize to anyone who can explain this one haha.

Did anyone else interact with SP? I don't read this series-Marvel joe ended with Marvel Joe IMO- but is it possible it's in Dusty's head and he is having some sort of breakdown? if no one but Dusty has any Sneak-Peek contact I go with mental breakdown. If not then hopefully it is Zartan because bringing back a positively dead character in a non-superhero/mostly real-world book (especially when the death was meant to carry some weight) is insulting to it's fans. :(

and that is why the ARAH run with an exception here and there, such as issue 155, totally blows after the issues in the 110's.

But really it can't be any worse than when they brought back Mindbender. I'm reserving full judgement until the story arc is finished.

I feel like bringing back Mindbender or bringing back SE or SS or Cobra Commander - those were all deliberate. Bringing back Sneak Peek is most likely a mistake they are trying to cover up.
Or if it is deliberate, then there is a major unexpected story arc coming up where he is going to be pretty central. And that could be interesting. He was never a particularly interesting character to begin with, I hope Hama makes this all worth it by fleshing him out and making him memorable or important for something other than being "the forgetable Joe who died, and then came back like Jesus". |

In reality, I'm guessing Stormgard is probably pretty close to the answer. Gaffes happen, people try to write themsleves out of a hole. Hopefully the reader buys it and the story moves on for them.
In the story, we've got a couple of options: Maybe the KIA Sneak Peek was a life model decoy, a replacement. Maybe Dusty is part of a secret military experiment and doesn't know it (yet). Or maybe, he's retarded. |

"Hawk I know what I saw. Sneak Peek was dead! I carried his body around for hours."
"Dusty, are you sure it was him? Maybe it was someone else? Maybe it was another Joe you mistook for Sneak Peek?" "Really? You mean we have other fat Joes that carry periscopes around on the battlefield?"

DUSTY SAW SNEAK PEEK DIE, CARRIED HIS DEAD BODY FOR HOURS, AND HAD STRETCHER CONFIRM HE WAS DEAD! There was another scene in the same arc where Duke makes a big deal about honoring the bodies of the initial group of dead Joes (Doc, Breaker, Quick Kick, etc). As we found out late in the Marvel series-- those dead bodies made it back home to Arlington cemetery. In #168, I got the sense Dusty was thinking that Sneak Peek had potentially been undercover before the TA/B War. So he's wondering "then who the hell did I carry back"? As a reader, I'm wondering the same thing. That's the plot point I see. I like USAgent's theory about how "Sneak Peek" could all be in Dusty's head. That'd be a more reasonable explanation and would be much easier to digest than a clone/Zartan/deep cover thread.
