I wasn't a Transformers fan growing up and I enjoyed the that arc all the same.
I agree that there could have been more done with the war. If Special Missions was still around at that point it would have been interesting to see what Hama would have done. I think Hama ended it the way he did as a comentary on how soldiers fight but the politicians start and end the wars.

I agree the Benzheen arc just sort of ended. I did like the "Counting Coup" issue that took place just after the end. I would love to see some more of the Benzheen war via special missions. Those were some of the first Joe comics I read and are among my favorites.
I actually used to play out a mission in which a group of Joes are sent back into Benzheen to rescue members of the BF 2000 that are revealed to have survived and had been captured!

I'm gonna nerd out here, but that actually sounds pretty cool.

In an interesting note, issue 119 contains the only appearance of the SkyStorm X-Wing Helicopter.
It's also weird because the Cobra Consulate Building was damaged a few issues prior, but it appears in perfect condition in this story. Herb Trimpe was an old friend of GI Joe, but he didn't seem to learn anything from the stories. He wrote more like a late 70's comic book writer and always seemed to confuse Cobra with Marvel's HYDRA. He also wrote issue 8, where Cobra planned to "rule the cosmos". Cobra was usually into mis-direction, business swindling and other sleazy tactics, but Trimpe wrote them as the generic evil army. It's one of the lesser issues, but I still think the Special Missions story set at the New York Mites game is the worst.

I was just reading SM TPB volume 4, and it struck me how bad some of the end of that series was. I mean, the baseball game issue was poor and gimicky, but WTF with that final issue where there are all those planes in the sky and the Defiant Shuttle comes down to join in a dogfight?
I'd say the best SM issues were: "Ambush"; the one with Mangler, Dusty, Lightfoot, and Outback (I think this was number 13); the Chomo Lungma arc; "Scoop" (probably my favorite ever); and I think there may also have been on early in that was part of the original Borovia arc. I always thought it was a shame that SM ended, but perhaps it was for the best at the time. I do think it would be a very cool thing to bring back though - it's ideal for gving face time to Joes who often get overlooked, and can easily be woven into the main storyline. What I'd really welcome would be a "Classic SM" series - a new book that goes back and revisists some of the old stories from the original ARAH run and fills in some of the blanks. I mean take the Cobra Island Civil War for instance - I'd like to see more of what the Recon team goes through as they capture that control tower. You could even use one of the Joes as a narrator - maybe Falcon or Tunnel Rat (or Captain Minh). Or the Joe amphibious armored assault - we know they fight the Cobras and make a breakthrough, but we don't see very much of it. What's that like? There's also the Benzheen story arc, which I agree finished very abruptly - we could see more action from that - perhaps with other Joes doing fighting elsewhere... |

for me, the beginning of the end was the Transformers showing up. I could dismiss the limited series out of hand. However, Even after Larry Hama commented a number of times that it no way interacted with the ARAH continuity, they showed up again like the clap.
2d place for WTF awards for scripting would be everything involving Firefly after his 3d or 4th appearance. He goes from IED boy in a balaclava to a ninja master who can blur his face and make the cheerleader pyramid from hell. 3D would be rewriting the story of how Snake eye's face got burned from Operation Eagle Claw, a real life operation to yet another sub-plot involving Snake eyes' personal life and Cobra. (In later day Viper uniforms, no less) As for Storm shadow eschewing automatic weapons, seems he had a break down sniper rifle early on in the Marvel run....
