Well then things are arguably about to get better for you. At least for a while.

I think there are two factors to remember as the book got older.
It tried to keep pace with the toy line hence the uniform changes, and it also was in the decline as a whole...cartoon was all but gone, toy line fading to Ninja Turtles and such, so they tried to beef up the book towards the end. Most books do hoping a change in pace, or focus or costumes will provide a fresh look and pick up sales. I specifically remember the dying gasps of books like Generation X or X-Factor where they changed team members or the direction of the book, etc. my favorite was the 90's Marvel UK line one of the predominate villians in all the books were Mystech...an immortal board of directors who just looked like older men and women, one of the henchmen was a doctor Oongaa Mullarky buttoned up but sexy looking mad scientist that made all sorts of creations...but towards the end the board of MysTech did some technomajic ceremony and became young looking buff supervillians called the Technowizards, and Mullarky started wearing skimpy leather dominatrix gear...needless to say this didn't save the books. Personally I think Marvel's Joe started to slip at #119, but it was a one shot issue and those usually fall through the cracks, but after that the stories kind of jump into following the toy line Eco Warriors, Ninja Force, Star Brigade, and while I think it slips a notch it was trying to support the follow the trend of toys the toy line supported. I think for me the title change to Snake Eyes in issue #135 reeked of desperation, and the tie in to the Transformers Generation 2 seems to take focus away from this Joe which I understand was in hopes of boosting sales but it just came off as sinking both ships a little more. The remaining issues were Star Brigade fillers and the big battle between Snake Eyes and Cobra Commander. In the end the book simply fell victim to a dying property...G.I. Joe was on its way out, and comics did its best to keep things hopping...in some cases I liked things, others not so much. |

I agreed with the above. I always considered 120 as the turning point, but really all those issues kind of ran together. It was defiantly dead by the time the transformers came into canonize themselves.

That thing in W land or Borovia or wherever, when they brought along the Battle Wagon and Brawler wasn't so bad was it?
I do wish they had left the Transformers out of the main series though. |

The Trimpe issues were all crap. He did the issue where Clutch went home on leave (9?) and that horrible Special Missions where the female Joes were undercover as cheerleaders.

So I had my nose buried in Classic G.I.Joe Vol. 12 last night before bed and finally got to and read issue #119. I wasn't really looking forward to this read other than to see how amazingly stupid, trite, and horrible it was as pointed out in this thread from a few months ago.
But you know what? Aside from the couple of things pointed out by the OP (Storm Shadow being Asian? The 'Joes reprogramming the 'bots just so they can hack them down in front of Cobra Commander and reveal themselves? SS's annoying play-by-play of everything he's thinking?), this wasn't that bad of a read. I mean, it was a groaner, okay, I'll give you that. But it also wasn't the first of the series. There were things that were either stupid, cliche, or "so '90s" about it. And I couldn't believe an artist would depict Storm Shadow as a WASP, and the dialogue was campy at best throughout... but it was still a fun read. Now the real groaners were the following couple of issues. I mean, everything with Ninja Force is a groaner. Dear God... and Destro and Baroness try their best... but wow that sequence in Trans-Carpathia is hard to get through. I had always thought Slice and Dice were these highly trained, "professional" "ninjas" but their depiction in issues 120 and 121, is it?--makes them seem more like high schoolers with swords. Oy!

The part of 119 that bothered me the most was having the Phantom get shot down but then revealing it was an unmanned drone.
I liked the DEF storyline, and didn't hate the Eco-warriors part. The Star Brigade had some cool action, but the plot left me cold. The title really declined when they to the Snake Eyes title, and I lost complete interest when they shoehorned the TF Gen 2 into it.

Yeah, I'm a big TF fan too, but mixing them with G.I.Joe was a bad move.
I realize that the original ARAH series is meant to be cannon, but I kind of often try to forget about a lot of what happens after the Trucial Abyssmia/Benzheen war. The story arc in Borovia, which I think was in the 130s is decent though. |

The story arc in Borovia, which I think was in the 130s is decent though. It's funny you mention the Trucial Abysmia/Benzheen war, though. That was a story arc that had some potential but the sloppy conclusion/tying up of the arc ruined it for me. Right as the 'Joes were waist deep in "the stuff" and they have a chance to make things really interesting the hostilities just end and everyone leaves. Well, technically Cobra doesn't leave, but instead of having the 'Joes fight their way out of it, everyone just packs up and leaves. It was lame to me as I was reading it. The Transcarpathia Silent Castle issues were pretty downright horrible. The concept of Destro constructing a Castle Destro replicate or "CDII" within the structure/beneath the ground of the "Silent Castle" from issue 24 was beyond far-fetched. Throw in Slice & Dice acting like sword-wielding teenagers, and the Battle Wagon and Brawler and the whole thing was a burden to read.
