Marvel especially.
When I 1st really got into comics alot had to do with old bent up back issues of Hulk and Iron Man I found at my grandmother's house as a kid..these would be my uncle's. As time went on I started collecting on my own and always bought cheap back issues, mostly due to the cover art. With that, I was buying alot of Hulk, Star Wars, Ghost Rider, Tomb Of Dracula, Heroes For Hire, Werewolf By Night...stuff that really just says "70's Marvel" Now here is my question. Does anyone ever notice the deep, richness of the colors? The lack of black? Even Darth Vader was illustrated in a blueish purple. Nothing ever seemed "flat" and I love those aesthetics. I can remember finally getting to the current stuff around the mid 80's with Marvel's 25th Ann. and alot of that stuff had some pretty thin ink and weak coloring. If this seems like drunken babble (because it is ) disregard it. If you understand what I'm talking about and appreciate that look alot of those titles from that decade shared...please elaborate. Maybe we'll get into the story telling in the 1970's as well...alot of left field stuff with some B-rated characters that I absolutely loved! |

It's been my opinion that the 1970s was an underrated period in comics.
Everyone remembers the "defining runs" of the 80s (Byrne, Miller, Simonson, Claremont) or the 1960s Kirby/Ditko/Lee stuff, but the 70s stories are really under appreciated. Gerber's Defenders and Mike Grell's Warlord were two of just many from that time that were amazing. |

Well, a lot of great characters were also created in the 70's and perfected in the 80's--especially female characters really shined in the 70's.
Ms Marvel, Spider-Woman, Shanna, She-Hulk (was like 1980 I think), Hellcat/Tigra, Marvel also went dark with their males-Ghost rider, hellstrom, man-thing, Falcon, Power man, iron fist, morbius, and made major changes with furry beast, the x-men (creating Wolvie and the rest).... DC also did some pretty cool stuff with Darkseid and branching out in many directions and genres, but all that eventually imploded--the 70's belonged to Marvel.. Neal Adams really perfected his art style in the 70's and art really started to blossom. The art is what shined in the 70's. Neal Adams, Nestor Redondo, wrightson, Buscema's and Windsor Smith's Conan, Byrne, simonson, Golden, Perez, Grell, etc... these guys paved the way for better printing techniques and paper to showcase their skills... I remember the art... And the same thing could be said about the golden age guys paving the path for the silver age guys, etc, etc....
