Yeah, I remember that. They were actually beaten by a team of four stay-at-home mums (and while they didn't place in the event, they at least finished the whole thing).
The thing is, if the media and Navy Public Affairs actually did a fair job of presenting the SEALs as what they actually are -- underwater demolitionists cross-trained in airborne insertion and small unit direct action/special reconnaissance, and not "super-sailors" -- their losing in the Eco-Challenge shouldn't have been all that surprising and shouldn't have become the minor embarrassment that it turned out to be (the Rangers also sent a team... IIRC, they managed to finish, but were nowhere near the top of the standings).

Pushing them to extremes doesn't always guarantee that they'll be conditioned to survive; it just means they know what to expect.
Exactly. Reed's not against the idea of simulating battlefield conditions... it's helpful to let a soldier know first-hand what to expect by letting them go through the experience once. But the thinking that repeated exposure to such extreme conditions will somehow condition the soldiers into being "harder" in the field fails to take into account that one can hardly condition a human body to learn to live on drastically lowered caloric intake and extreme environmental exposure over the course of a 2 or 3 month-long regimen. The type of toughness that bears itself out in the field is the one that a recruit already brings with him/her from the "outside world" or from pre-elite unit training, and repeated attempts at "accelerated" conditioning only exposes applicants to unnecessary physical and mental hardship.
