I totally understand the fact that you collect figures as a hobby as well as an investment, but don't get too crazy about it. I loved toys as a kid and I started collecting them again in 1995 when the Star Wars POTF2 line was released. While growing up my parents didn't have alot of money, so I didn't have many toys. I used to go over to a friend's house to play because he had EVERY Star Wars and Transformers item that was released back in the 70's and 80's. He wasn't into G.I. joe though, so that's what I tried to collect the most when I had the money. Most of my G.I. Joe collection was stolen, so I've been trying to replace them over the years.
When the Star Wars POTF2 line was released in 1995 I was buying 2 of EVERY figure that they released. One to open, and one to keep sealed, you know because they could be "worth" some money some day. Well 13 years later that was a horrible "investment" because those figures are pretty much worthless right now. I would be lucky if I got back what I paid for them. These figures were way over produced like 1987 & 1988 Topps baseball cards.
As for my collecting now, and for this 25th Anniversary line, I only buy the figures I like. I open most of them for display. If there is a figure I really like I might buy 2 to keep one sealed. I no longer feel the need to buy EVERY figure that they release. I mainly collect G.I. Joe, Star Wars and Transformers now, with the occasional super hero figure thrown in.
I don't suggest you buy these figures as an investment because you might be sorry later on down the line. Buy coins from the mint instead. If you want to make money with these figures now is the time. It's all about supply and demand. Old figures were never made with collectors in mind. They were toys for kids. Now they make figures with kids and adults in mind, so they produce more, and people are trying to save them MOC. The reason why original MOC figures are worth so much is because not many people saved them that way with the idea of them being "worth" something down the line. Now everybody saves them for that purpose. If you want to make some money with toys buy a figure that just comes out and try to be one of the first people to sell it on ebay, because once they are out in abundance the prices will fall.
