An interesting idea. I doubt it's intentional, because it's a real pain in the a$$ to snap in there. (On the other hand, it's also a pain in the a$$ to snap it onto the backpack. The only way mine holds in place is to sit it off-center.)

All things considered, I think I'd prefer the blade on the backpack for this figure. Attaching it the gun looks a little too sci-fi, and I don't know what purpose a blade would serve in that position on the gun. However, I'm really concerned about those backpack pegs. I fear that one day the peg's going to break and the gun will fall off, and I'll lose it forever.

With that in mind, I just put the blade on the gun anyway. I suppose one other benefit of this is that it helps to visually distinguish the weapons from Skeletron's. (I tried putting the Wolf Trooper's blade on his gun, but for some reason it just looks better that way in gray than in red.)
