I had issues 6 & 7 very early, and saw the Oktober Guard/Red Oktober episodes of the show as a kid. Of the two, unusually, the comics story tended to be the bigger influence on how I viewed the Guard. TBH, I like the Oktober Guard more in concept than execution, as beyond 1982, there never seemed to be enough of them to be a viable threat.

I strongly disagree with that as a blanket statement. I'd argue that the show and the comics had slightly different goals, and both had ups and downs. Dusty's fake betrayal from the show, for example, was much better executed than Scarlett's in the comics. One has a sick mother and trouble paying bills, the other gets mad because she feels left out by...(sigh) Ninja Force. The cartoon provides a much more reasonable explanation for Cobra to fall for it. Other things, like Scarlett getting shot pointblank in the head and Storm Shadow getting riddled with machine gun holes, yet both surviving while characters without plot armor are snuffed easily is a dichotomy that I find as dumb as the Fatal Fluffies and giant vegetables. (Or maybe the Baroness is just really, really incompetent in the comics, since she shot both and both survived. To paraphrase Lady Jaye in Money to Burn, her victims have one thing in common: longevity!) To me, worlds should be consistent: if Doc can die of a headshot, Scarlett should be able to as well.
Lengthy rant above aside, I absolutely agree with this as a specific statement regarding the Guard. Particularly Daina and Wong are awful on the show. I like the crater base, and Stormavik's look is interesting, though not better than the comic look. Otherwise the comics versions are better.

I had a Lanard figure when I was a kid that had a red star on his hat and I figured he was an October Guard guy. Got him in a flea market box of Joes in 87. Didn't realize until YESTERDAY that it said LANARD right on his damn leg and he's not even a Joe!
To be fair, the episodes that they're in (aside from their brief appearance in Arise, Serpentor, Arise) are The Invaders and the Great Alaskan Land Rush, which IMO are two of the weakest entries in the first season, so they aren't that memorable.
We had Big Bear and Red Star growing up, but until we got the comics 3-pack Guard figures in 05 or 06, the rest of the Russian roster was filled out with Lanard Corps figures piled into a grey Corps Jeep. Brekhov was the Baron guy with the eyepatch.

We did just the opposite, lol. They were always badguys, except Big Bear, who defected because he looked a bit like Ramius (Sean Connery) from Red October*. The only thing is, being a small number of slightly lame Corps figures, they were more of a nuisance, like the Dreadnoks, than a real threat to the Joes.
*Actually, I'd still like to turn the black suited mail-away Big Bear figure into Ramius from the start of the movie by painting some gray in his beard.

I like the Issues 6-7 story (though Hawk's behavior could've gotten his team killed) and that Special Missions one was good. One of the ones I remember from being a kid, but haven't read in probably 15 years, was the Image one where the Joes, Destro and the old members of the New Guard teamed up to find Flint and Baroness, who'd been captured by the Russian mob, or something like that. And Lt. Gorky was a traitor. If I read it today, I might think it was terrible, but as a kid, I loved it.
