Countdown for Zartan is a master class in getting you to care about owning figures:
* Zartan: disguise, hates sunlight, camouflage ability, prefers dark combat where he has an advantage. Just goes straight down the list.
*Lady Jaye: Better than anyone with javelins (Gung-Ho is pretty good at the beginning in his own right), leadership, cool under pressure leading the search operation for the bomb.
* Doc: Quick on his feet in combat, throws the explosive back at the Cobra recruit, quickly removing the detonator. He can handle himself if things get harry in case a kid just dismissed him as the team doctor.
* Gung-Ho: Tough guy, but also clever with the watch trick he plays on Zartan. His little psyop gives them just enough time to get that bomb disarmed. We also see for what little those Cobra recruits have learned, they aren't ready for changing combat conditions as opposed to Gung-Ho who is a wrecking crew in combat.
* Dreadnoks: Destruction with their weapons and no concern for the lives of the prisoners or even Zartan, when it becomes apparent he's been captured, "Ah, that's horrible, who's gonna pay us?" Evil scum for children to collect.
* Storm Shadow: For as impressive as the Dreadnoks where in their weapons demo, his feets destroying a tank are far more impressive, drives home the value of the Cobra ninja to own as an action figure, "a ninja is a weapon.' Might as well be speaking directly to a child with maybe just enough pocket money to buy a new Joe fig. His sense of honor creates a contrast for a child to explore himself.
* Spirit: Never loses his cool and waits for the perfect chance to escape. We also see how the pet accessory acts as a wonderful combat companion for him, cutting off Storm Shadow's second shot at him, I believe.
Countdown for Zartan is a great episode. One of the best of the show.
As far as the Spirit vs Storm Shadow thing, I definitely prefer it to Snake Eyes vs Storm Shadow, for several reasons. 1: The different fighting styles. Especially in Revenge of Cobra, but also Countdown for Zartan IIRC, you can tell that Spirit is fighting using a very western style, while Storm Shadow's style is decidedly eastern martial arts. But GI Joe shows them as evenly matched, simply using contrasting approaches. Great stuff. In the comics, Snake Eyes and SS pretty much use identical and ever more ridiculous ninja methods, which isn't nearly as interesting.
2: Snake Eyes and SS have basically one or two real fights before Storm Shadow spills his plan to track down Hard-Master's killer, and then they're buddies for the remainder of the run. In the show, Storm Shadow has his code, but he never goes good, so Spirit and Storm Shadow's clashes can continue, like Dust-Viper mentioned. Storm Shadow is conflicted enough to make him interesting, but he's still bad.
