The fact(?) that it's not a real pistol might help to trying to customize the web gear further. One of my ultimate goals is to have a Cobra trooper with some kind of removable pistol. When I was a kid, for some reason, those prototype photos in the small catalogues looked, to me, like the Cobra trooper had a removable pistol because the pistol like extended across the chest. I guess maybe they decided to tone down the pistol to make room for the Cobra chest emblem.

I trimmed off the pistols on my Retro Cobra Troopers.. I’m spoiled and don’t like non-removable pistols on modern figures, plus it makes the design a little cleaner and the chest pistol is redundant with the leg one, really.
Jason: What book are you referring to? Is it that "The Art of GI Joe" book series from 3DJoes that came out a few years ago? I was interested in getting the complete set slipcase, and missed out on the nice sale back in Nov 2018.
However, the wonderful reproduced card art of the new Retro figures seems to be a good reference, and as you point out, the pistol doesn't look like a regular pistol. As DS notes, it may be more of a flare gun. But what small bit that can be seen on the original art doesn't look like flare ammo--though it does look like ammo specifically for the pistol on his webgear in the part.
I think that's the point I dropped the whole thing from my figure. I don't know if there's a good mold for pistol that looks right for the larger shells I planned on using, and I don't think it will be right using smaller/normal sized shells for a pistol here. If I figure out the right combo (perhaps an experimental dart gun or other projectile) and appropriate sculpts, I'll finish off this last mile...
DS: I here you on the redundancy (why I removed the knife of the web harness). I'm on a little opposite on you in terms of removable pistols, especially on the chest. Like you mention, removing the sculpted gun does make it cleaner, plus makes it a lot easier (and less awkward looking)to have him hold his assault rifle with two hands. But for right now, the small/thin sculpted-on pistol is well detailed, not too obstrusive and doesn't offend the Garrido image too much. Plus I don't want to try and clean up or cover up where is cut off.
Any further ideas on this are appreciated any time, but has to look really good and be on point to the card art. We are so close. Otherwise, I got an Officer and some Grunts last weekend, messed with Grunts this week, will start to mess with Officer this weekend--I don't expect many ideas from this new Officer, but I can verify if construction moves the same way, and do some webgear swapping with 25th and POC-custom. Or be depressed and walk away based on Saturday's new Joe news...
