1-McFarlane toys turning action figures into statues. They appealed to older kids but had no play value. They also upped the expectations for what an action figure should be - size, paint apps, realism. And now we have 6" "action" figures, but mostly they're just little statues.
2-Lego licensing. I know that with my kids it was way better to get a Marvel lego set than to buy action figures. The lego set would have at least one vehicle and usually several heroes. Plus lego is more "educational" because you can rebuild it and reuse things. My kids never got into star wars or marvel figures but played with lego all the time.
Both of these are excellent point. My two sons that are still at home (Ages 11 & 9) still "collect" some toys. My 11 yr old collects Mario toys, but like the McFarlane example you gave, he just displays his Mario sets like they are statues or decorations for his bedroom. My 9 yr old actually still plays with Legos though. It is interesting, I have a 24 yr old son who primarily played with Legos as a child (he was in into GIJoe Spy Troops & Sigma Six for a while). He ended up earning a degree in Applied Science (CAD drawings) and is now a Geo-Spatial Engineer for the Army.
