From a distance, I wonder if sets of three (or three plus one) dissuades some prospective buyers, due to the higher number of figures and/or price point. Overall, some people might be reluctant to jump in as collecting this line seems like a bigger commitment of shelf space and dollars.
On the other hand, the sets seem like good value on a per figure basis. And a big plus is you get ready-made-teams in a way that frustratingly you often don't with other toylines (even over time).
And I wonder if part of what enables JoyToy to be so prolific and diverse in its releases is knowing that for most of them it can move the entire teams/waves at once, without individual figures lingering/not selling.
Of course, it need not be an either/or proposition. So, if you like both trios and singles, how do you feel about the current balance? Would you like to see more single releases?
I prefer the squad packs. Each figure has a nice blend of uniqueness while simultaneously generic enough to squad build. On my Earth shelves Dark Source squad packs made it easy to fill out Omega Red's army with soldiers that look substantial enough to take on GI Joe, SHIELD, or the Justice League. On my cosmic shelves the more futuristic looking squads now look like underdog resistance fighters trying hold back the spread of the new Sith Imperium.
I have bought most of the single figures like Kwai & Ling, but even they still function as two men teams. As long as they keep making stuff I like, I'll keep buying.
