Some aircraft kits I’ve done have been like this, and I think my Bandai C-3PO was too. Usually just a small sections for a color they don’t need enough of to make a separate tree.
I don’t know enough about molding or the specific plastics Joes use to know whether that comparison was a useful one, but it’s what I had in mind. The first time I saw it I was really surprised, as I had always just casually assumed that color and mold were inseparable. No idea whether it’s easy or hard, expensive or not, possible in the 80s or not. It does seem rarer, but then again models generally have a bunch of trees so it might be less advantageous for them than it might be for a Joe.
Do you have any idea whether the Major’s tooling, or Red Laser’s, is original or not? Obviously the shapes are what we all remember, but I’ve always wondered whether the shapes begat the molds or vice versa, & exactly what lineage if any their molds have.
Black Major, Red Laser, and the others have their own molds. Some BM figures even have the Hasbro stamp removed, the BM's on. These small batch enthusiasts have invested 10s of thousands of dollars to make their own tooling.
