My ex was like that, couldn't make or keep any real friends. Just an observation. Obviously you're looking for some form of validation for your current lifestyle. Is it really so hard to walk up to strangers and start talking?
Sometimes it can be terrifying. But most of the time I just feel very uncomfortable. I feel claustrophobic in crowds, and I don't like when people notice me. I mean, I used to have these huge, ridiculous mutton-chop side burns, and I would frequently get compliments on them, although I doubt half of them were sincere. But in instances like that, when a total stranger comes up to me and says they like my chops or my shirt or whatever, my brain kind of freezes up and I have no idea what to say.
Even when you're not in a combat situation in the military, you can still feel that sort of disconnected displacement when you return to civilian life. It's like that scene in "The Hurt Locker" when the protagonist is back with his wife and kid and shopping at the grocery store. That scene, where he's standing in an aisle and there are hundreds of cereals to choose from, it really struck a chord with me. I feel that way almost every time I go out - like, a few weeks ago you're in this violent, filthy country where brutality and death is an every day occurence, and now you're at these stores that cater to every creature comfort imaginable, and it all seems so pointless. It's really unsettling, and you miss the exhilaration of danger and survival, of having a specific purpose. It dismantles everything you've known about living in the modern world until its all very trite and unimportant.
But what are your options? When you have responsibilities like a kid and a wife and bills and debts, you can't turn your back on them, even if you wanted to. And if you were free from all that, where can you go? You can't just walk on to anyone's property and live there, and if you can afford to purchase some land outright, you still have to pay property taxes. The government doesn't want people living off the grid anyway - they need to be accountable for every citizen.
I guess I mostly feel trapped by modernity, that there is no way out to live a healthy, happy life. Although, this kind of human condition has plagued people throughout all history in one way or another. I don't claim my feelings or opinions are unique or exceptional. Just trying to see how others that feel the same way cope, or looking for some bona fide advice or encouragement from others who know people like me.
