I think Starblazers was the first.). TF was copied many, many times, but that doesn't make it bad. If you didn't like the pacing, that is strange because your criticism of Robotech is basically the same as mine of Renegades - except you acknowledge it moved the story along, where I am saying we haven't seen yet how it will.
I respect that you disagree, and obviously LOVE Renegades. My feeling is that it is straying. I'm not saying the show sucks or anything like that. Especially for kids, you do need some connecting threads. Imagine hearing a speech that, without a real segue, changes subjects, and then comes back to the original point with only a slight, "I'll come back to this later." Kids - even more than adults - need this kind of structure. It is obvious that the story with the Arashikage isn't over. I would have personally preferred developing the current cast instead of adding new characters every week, and trying to explain them. That appears to be the direction they are going. If so, this seems very Sunbow - with cameos of Joes and Cobras to justify having them in the toy line.
I don't know. I don't think we're making the same argument at all. ALOT happened in this episode. However, they accomplished nothing in terms of goal you original brought up. Clearing their names.
With Robotech, it was different. There were whole episodes with almost nothing but exposition. Whole episodes where almost NOTHING happened. Tons of side trips, and sidebars taken. So you're saying it's okay for Robotech, but not Renegades. That doesn't even make sense. Robotech wasn't that well written, and the dialogue was at times almost as bad as Sunbow. Just stupidity.
When it comes to exposition, I'm definitely not against it. Oddly, I LOVE the IDW Joe-verse. When reading I love a slow build and exposition. However, to me, a moving media, needs to move.
This episode of Renegades did tons of moving, it moved our character's along, both figuratively, and literally. SE thought he knew a peaceful place for them to rest, and all they found was someone else breathing down their neck. I'd wage next episode Duke finds out "You really CAN'T go home again.". Not only does this keep our Renegades on the road, it also adds to their feeling of being alone, them against the world, which will help them bond together as they have nowhere else to turn.
THAT right there, is moving the story along. As much as this story is about them clearing their names, it's also about becoming a unit. Trusting each other with their lives. The types of bonds that can only be formed in combat or other times of life threatening crisis. You want them to "get on with it", but they are. If the Joes clear their names before those bonds are formed then this whole story is moot. They'd clear their names and move on.
