Shout! Factory G.I. Joe DIC Series On DVD Update - GI Joe News
RolandofGilead:
This is... sort of good news.
tgbobafett:
YAY!!!! Finally!! Actually I dont remember this series but I'd like to have it on dvd none the less lol now when does Gobots come to dvd?? ;p
Tuskegee Joe:
Release SCOOP in M.E. format too!!! Likely thee first DVD will be "Operation Dragonfire," whereas Scoop picks up the pieces after the "87 movie events. Even if you hate DiC, buy the 1st 5-part mini-series. Of all DiC toons, "Operataion Dragonfire" is thee closest to the spirit of Sunbow (despite its lesser-quality DiC animation). Scoop is greatly portrayed with much potential in his character. A really regular Joe, taking the lead, throughout the entire 5-part debut series.

On a separate note of Scoop, IDW has done a fine job showcasing Scoop. I sincerely hope more future comics + cartoons + sequels can really explore Scoop's great character potentiality. Till then, I'm really looking forward to again seeing his debut in this first ever DiC DVD "Operation Dragonfire"!! Highly recommended!!!

cobra_temple:
Wow...that's pretty bad. No wonder the classic Joe stuff went belly-up when this was attached to their brand.
RolandofGilead:
I've never seen a full episode. I can't wait to own the DVDs and laugh.

The original CHALLENGE OF THE GOBOTS mini-series is out right now. I bought it a few weeks back and thought it was a lot of fun.

I've heard fan-dubs before - A lot of people seem to think voice work is easy then proceed to sound as camp as tits when they actually try it.

Personally, I don't mind the DiC stuff, finding it infinitely preferable to the animated movie. Sunbow (which I do like) had a metric ton of flaws, but as it came first it's the yardstick to judge what comes after.

Speaking of Scoop, IDW has done a fine job showcasing Scoop.
They have? In what? I'll admit, I skip about 90% of IDW's Joe stuff (and about 100% of their TF stuff these days - just don't care for the stories), but Scoop's been a long time favorite of mine, so if IDW's actually using him, I'd like to see.

And I, too, would be 100% behind a modern era Scoop figure.

Scoop surely had been getting (from IDW) some great face time + great recognition. If you missed a few issues IDW has digital copies for cels, tablets, etc. Again, he's just a really great , yet, tragically under-used character. However IDW is doing a fine job with Scoop which the seperate cartoon, toy, and movie teams should take note of. He's even graced the front-covers of IDW a couple of times...

Not really, at least not Operation Dragonfire and the first season. While not quite as flashy as Sunbow's episodes, I DID find the animation to be relatively consistent. Bear in mind where once Joe was one of the pioneers of the toy tie cartoon, by 1989/1990 practically any and EVERY toy property had some sort of cartoon.

Um, Joe DIDN'T go "belly-up" when they got the DiC cartoons. If anything, the DiC series probably gave the brand a shot in the arm (the last DiC episode aired in 1992, the series continued on in syndication for another TWO YEARS). The GI Joe RAH brand was on retail for TWELVE YEARS. By 1989, the kids that grew up with the original Sunbow series were largely moving beyond toys, so Hasbro needed to catch a new group of kids, and the best way to do that was with a cartoon that actually promoted what was available at retail.

I feel that, in general, DiC gets an undeservingly bad rap. Most of which I point to the fact many here grew up watching the Sunbow series, and simply "grew out of" Joe by the time DiC was produced. No, it is not high theatre, but neither was Sunbow. I think the biggest issue with DiC is not the animation quality (at least initially) or the voice work (full of guys who STILL WORK TODAY), it was the show was simply "pedestrian" and just didn't stand out in a market saturated with toy tie ins. Where as Sunbow used some clever voice acting and (relatively) high production values and was one of the first on the market, DiC was just more of the same you could find on any other cartoon of the time.
DESTRO:
This is 100% on the buy list.
Griff:
I hope this gets released. I want it on dvd just as i need to get the sunbow series on dvd and Jem.
tgbobafett:
I had more toys based on this series as a kid than I did the original series heh was Hit & Run and Shockwave in the toons? Or just toys?
crock master:
during all these series i did drift away from gi joe. i even remeber being really bummed about the change. i thus moved onto ninja turtles and forgot all about g i joe untill the mortal kombat toys.
the general:
I am hoping to buy this series so I can have the entire G.I. Joe movie collection including all the TV shows to date as well as the last movie and the new G.I. Joe 2 coming next year.
RolandofGilead:
More importantly, when are we getting GI Joe Renegades on DVD?
SVT_COBRA:
I liked the DIC series for the most part, but some of it was pretty bad.
sjames90:
These bring back some... memories.
Fast_Draw:
I don't care. I'll be buying it to complete my childhood GI Joe memories.
Kaisugi:
Hmm.... I just realized after watching the opening that I have absolutely zero connection to this part of the Joe world.

(and part of me is very happy about that)
spazzy:
Sweet looking forward to them, man did they know how to market the toys!
Tollbooth:
This stuff was so bad Ive had nightmares about it since I heard it was coming out. Bad everything don't argue with me because I'll win. Don't tell me that it was better than sunbow because that just don't jive. Look at all the figures and vehicles that were sold do to sunbow. I think they are trying to kill the new toy line again with this sh@t. I hope it goes straight to Ross because I will buy as many as I can and burn them to a crisp with Crystal ball watching over it in all his glory as the greastest peg warmer of all times. Of corse arctic destro would be his right hand man in this epic event.
Down with Dic!!!
Steelgrave:
I can't wait for this! I like the DIC series better than the original. The opening song is a million times better than the original. I think the DIC series has more energy, is faster paced & is more fun than the original. The Sunbow series gets boring quite a bit.
Gothiczartan:
Since I got all the DIC series on a DVD sets that this nice gentleman had gave me after he asked me to get something from the san diego comic convention last year. right now I would not have to worry about if there are going to be the complete DIC series on DVD sets. I hope they do the same thing for gi joe extreme and sgt. savage cartoon.
thairestauranteur:
The DIC series was total crap. Part of what made the Sunbow cartoon so good was Wally Burr's excellent voice direction. The voice direction for the DIC series was nothing more than reading the lines from the page. No mentionable emotion. Just dry reading. Unremarkable.

The DIC series is would probably be for completists but not much more than that because the cartoon was really terrible.

Makes you wonder why Hasbro didn't keep Sunbow? Sunbow did a good job and when they went to DIC....well, everyone got served a big fat dick.
thairestauranteur:
If I am not mistake, I think I remember reading online about how Jon Chu grew up watching this DIC series. I hope he took the time to actually read the Larry Hama comic and watch two original mini series. Many Sunbow episodes are noteworthy as well. DIC episodes were crap by comparison. If this is true, I hope Chu does not make Joe2 in line with DIC. We Joe fans will be served the dick yet again if this is the case!
GI abe444:
Not as good as Sunbow but still fun to watch! good news
Quick Kick:
The Dic series season 1, has a lot of high quality episodes that rival any episodes from the sunbow series. There are some great plot lines, and the Season 1 Animation, while different from the sunbow series is not bad at all, just different.

I think for a lot of people who grew up with G.I.Joe before the Dic era, don't understand there was an entire generation of G.I.Joe fans who grew up watching this series and playing with the toy version of the characters that were represented in it

Can't wait for this dvd set to come out!
DecepticonSpike:
I never cared for the DIC episodes.
CVdelgado:
i think it will be safer to just not watch this or get into it at all. i didnt watch this at all when i was younger and i just dont have any kind of interest in it really.

i recently started watching transformers beastwars with my son, now that was pretty cool even compared to the old classic toon. i just picked up season 2 and 3 today.

im just not feeling dic.
ChaplainAsst:
To give DiC it's due, Operation Dragonfire was pretty good. Beyond that, there were some really awful episodes - Joe vs. Cobra football game sticks out in my mind - but to be somewhat fair, this wasn't the high point in GI Joe vehicle design or character design. Sunbow did well with some great characters and vechicles; DiC was left with a small budget, huge cast of characters with strange vehicles, and no real motivation for the story.
Steel Brigade:
I will get this for sure...for nostalgia sake, seeing some 90's characters in action, Operation Dragonfire is cool, (& I'm sure I'll have a few laughs).

I'm glad Shout is behind this & have been a big fan of them in the last few years.

Truth be told DIC was trying to run the cartoon market back in the day & they actually paid Hasbro to make this cartoon, not the usual way of Hasbro contracting them, it was largely known that DIC was after the cartoon market by paying for licensing from other companies (like Hasbro) so that they could run other animation houses out of the business by having a great licensing franchise on the animation market in the 90's by knocking everyone else out & paying the companies to MAKE their cartoon, Hasbro just watched their profits on this one by being paid for the brand rather than contracting a product (like with Sunbow, or any of the other Joe animations after DIC)... DIC almost succeeded in this plan as they were every where in cartoons during the early 90's. But thankfully they didn't win...
cobralalalala!:
I'm excited. I've never even watched one episode, but non the less, I feel that this is an important part of G.I Joe history. I tend to like a lot of cartoons that others hate, so I'm expecting to like this series, Ha!
G.I.Spawn:
Yeah, I'm looking forward to getting this
