Canceled Arctic Assault Snake Eyes Review

Pursuit-Of-Cobra-Arctic-Assault-Snake-Eyes-Review
An unfortunate byproduct of changing plans is the cancellation of product(s). For example, JoeCon 2009 saw the debut of many Pursuit Of Cobra items, most of which were delayed from their intended release dates. Some were changed, retooled, repainted and what have you, others outright canceled. Arctic Assault Snake Eyes was one of them.

Nonetheless it's always interesting to check out "what could have been", and that's just what we have for you. Hit the title bar to check out Steel Brigade's review of Snake Eyes(Arctic Assault)!

Originally planned for the 1st incarnation of 2010's "Pursuit Of Cobra" line of singles (wave 2), Arctic Threat Snake Eyes was revamped when "plans change" for GI Joe. Pursuit Of Cobra was moved from a Spring 2010 to a Fall 2010 schedule when retailers had called it quits on the Rise Of Cobra line that had been overstocked on most toy shelfs in 2009. Hasbro had to regroup & moved the Pursuit Of Cobra line back, with new card art, figure lineups, (& most importantly) dropped all movie actor likenesses from the line, so that POC was no longer a direct sequel to the ROC line-up, but now more of a new launch for GI Joe. This way POC could be seen as a continuation of ROC, ME, Resolute, or as a stand-alone/fresh new start for Joe. Retailers were convinced & the POC line is now making it's way to toy shelves.

Some originally planned POC figures, like Jungle Assault Duke, & Desert Battle Zartan, found a new home in POC with dropped actor likenesses heads. Others like (the former mail-away cobra carded) Cobra Commander stayed as is (because it was already changed enough from the movie likeness), but became a chase release & lost a cool accessory in transition. Still others like Arctic Threat Duke (now coming as Alpine) & Desert Battle Ripcord (now as Sky Dive) & Arctic Threat Snake Eyes (now as Desert Battle Snake Eyes) were re-decoed/re-headed/or renamed & made into the final line with some minor aesthetic changes.

Although not much has changed with the canceled Arctic Threat Snake Eyes vs the Desert Battle final version, it is glaring to most fans that with the overall look of this Snake Eyes, that he might be suited better for cold environments. Deserts can get cold at night, & Snake Eyes should be moving in the shadows, but for most, this figure was still originally intended for Arctic regions.

This Snake Eyes is our 3rd arctic version (4th if you count the DVD pack "radioactive" themed figure) of the Joe Team's most popular character, as both ME & ROC had arctic versions of Snake. This release has a lot of cool gear, a new version of his trusty wolf Timber, & some new tooling involved that easily separates him from his earlier cold weather counter parts.

Most of the body was used on the ROC Paris Pursuit Snake Eyes, but now he has new knee-guards (non-beneficial as it actually is more of a hindrance in his balance/movement than a help), & new arms for a well-padded look. The head also appears to be retooled, & you can actually raise the visor on this version, although his eyes & face are unpainted as opposed to how the final desert version was released. The color scheme is outstanding on this version, it's clear that the head coloration is based on his arctic ROC appearance, but what really shines is the great metallic blue accents he has on his uniform, a color we have not seen on previous figures. Other than the additional weapons, this is what really distinguishes this version from the Desert Battle final release.

Which brings us to one of the reasons why POC is such a hit with fans...the gear!! Now many samples of Arctic Threat Snake Eyes did not include all of this gear, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones! Snake Eyes comes with a modern version 3 of Timber (with a howling action when the tail is activated - the colors are near identical *maybe a lighter under-wash* to the retail version), new vest & harness, an Ice Drill, 2 storable ice picks (repurposed w/Arctic Threat Destro), 2 storable Mac-10 submachine guns (previously seen w/the unreleased Jungle Assault Storm Shadow) the assualt rifle that was included with Paris Pursuit Snake Eyes, a katana/sheath, & a ROC stand.

On the downside, the figure's overall bulk does not lend well to cool armanant posing, & although the Mac's look great, they work better in Storm Sahdows hands than Snake's, because of the thickness of his sleeves. On the plus side... technically, this figure can carry all of his gear!!

A POC Arctic Threat themed Snake Eyes never made it to retail, but his place in POC's early history makes for an interesting figure, & shows fans how many changes a character can go through just on deco alone.
It is good to see that even though the colors/purpose of this Snake Eyes was changed, the figure was not overall canceled, & the mold & detailed gear in the final "Desert" version, is probably the most available in the 1st 2 waves of POC.

Arctic Threat Snake Eyes is one of the hardest to come by of all the unreleased ROC/POC figures, easier than the very rare City Strike Scarlett, or Desert Battle Heavy Duty, but harder than the common figures like Arctic Threat Destro, & Elite Ice Viper. If you can find this figure on the secondary market he is definitely recommended for "Canceled Joe Figure Enthusiasts" & Snake Eyes fans.
vermillion21:
I would love to get ahold of this figure ... looks awesome!!!
Steel Brigade:
^ Thanks, he is pretty sweet... here's a couple more bonus pics!
JohnnyAngel77:
Ugh, it kills me to see pics of the badass unreleased figures. Nice review though.
erwiny:
Thanks for sharing bro! Love the deco and accessories on this version.
CQBViper:
Thanks for the info. I wondered if PoC Desert SE wasn't intended for something else. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!
07GT500 COBRA:
I was lucky enough to get this figure from China for about $30 delivered. One of my favorites of my collection.

I'd love to have that Scarlett too though.
CrimsonGuard101:
Don't like the head on this one, but the rest was a perfect 10..stupid cancellations...
Gundamben831:
gahhh you and gyre both are lucky to have that city strike scarlett I wish I could see one of those in person someday, but most likely will never happen. I only have so-many of certain prototypes and it is one fig I would like to have. as for the SE he is really cool sans the ROC legs I saw a thread on here a while back someone had changed the legs with the CS SE and it looks 10x better.
Baron Samedi:
Just like the Desert version, the best part of this figure is the visor and head sculpt in my opinion. I hope to see it re-used in the future, hopefully on the wave 3 Snake Eyes.
vince_chua:
This figure actually looks cooler in person than in photos. I managed to get one but the accessories are not complete like yours. It is my favourite arctic figure. Because of it I'm collecting the arctic range now.
By the way, you should attached the ice-picks like in this photo
http://www.hisstank.com/gi-joe-news/...achmentid=7637
I managed to force my ice pick into the 'loop' and it looks great!
imnotbradpitt:
Awesome figure. Would love to see it offered again in this deco.
Thanks for putting up the review and pictures!

Pitt out!
Dealer Destro:
Seems Hasbro may be starting to realize you can only outfit one guy so many times before he becomes a surplus, aka a pegwarmer. Fill this gap with a different character.
steelbrig:
Great review! This version of Snake Eyes is really awesome! I love his new gear!
dragon:
i may pass on this one looks like same snakeyes with blue coat, timber only thing is new are some of his weapons with white visor ninja using snow drill thats not ninja like
Gyre-Viper:
smashing review, SB.
I love this figure. The Desert SE has grown on me but this canceled version trumps it.
CobraResolute:
Great figure. Hasbro should have released the figure this way rather than the Desert version. Considering all of the great Arctic themed toys we've gotten in POC this would have been a great fit.

I don't mind rehashes of the main characters if it makes sense or is useful. Arctic Snake Eyes, Duke, Scarlett...etc make sense and are fine additions.
Breakerfan:
I already have an artic Snake Eyes with skulls around his neck and the outfit he wore in Marvel issue 2. I also have an artic Snake Eyes from the ROC line. I don't need anymore artic Snake Eyes.
M. Aster Karver:
Yah, City Strike Scarlett is very nice and they could have cancelled the tornado kick or the poc wave 1 SE for her. I know SE is popular and all, but 50+ versions of him? Enough! I'd rather see ten versions of Captain Grid-Iron. Although I'd LOVE to have that drill accessory, truth be told.
Python_Puckman:
Was really hoping to get this one, but the one they gave us is awesome too.
gunslingercbr:
I would definitely preferred to have gotten this figure as the arctic themed figure of the wave. if Hasbro did not want to put two arctic figures in a single wave, they could have held Snow Job to wave two to (to coincide with arctic Destro), had SE's as the arctic theme for wave 1 and move Dusty up to wave 1 as the desert themed figure for that wave.
Flint071:
What is with the ice drill for the Arctic troops... are they all going ice fishing?
VideoViper:
Its just another Snake-Eyes, it will most likely be released in some other form down the line. We don't need 4-5 Snake-Eyes a year. (IMO 1 a year would be enough to keep interest in the charactor.)

I'd rather have the shelf space for a new or updated charactor.
chickenbroth:
It's a million times better than "retarded kick" Snake-Eyes.
Captain Carstein:
Thanks for the review. I always love your comparison pics.
Topside:
i only gave it a 5 since it was mostly a repaint and we already have 2 other "arctic" themed SEs. I would have been happier if they stuck a different head on it and introduced it as a "city strike" character.
zpartikuz:
this is indeed a very cool SE, and im proud to say i own one! = )
SNAKE EYES:
I like this arctic SE, but I actually prefer the one we got.

I like the all black look better... plus I think the visor is cooler and I like the painted eyes and flesh which IMO looks cool... the unreleased SE doesn't have those paint apps.
Steel Brigade:
Thanks for all the feedback guys!!

I know that is how they are pictured @ the Con, but with the rarity of this figure, I am not chancing one of the clips stretching, having stress marks or breaking. It does look better this way, but this is not a "replaceable" figure in my collection, so I opted for a easier display option.

Thanks buddy!! Along with City Strike Scarlett, Jungle Assault Storm Shadow, & Desert Battle Ripcord, this Snake Eyes is one of my favorites of my POC unreleasedcollection.

Good point, I wonder what happened exactly when they were shuffling the waves for who was in, out, & who got changed... & if we all would have been more satisfied with different options than the POC lineup we have now.

It's because of feedback like ^this^ that I do them!

I agree about the visor & face my friend, but overall I perfer this uniform deco & function. The Desert Battle visor has that sweet sheen to it, & the painted face is a nice bonus, I just really like the blue paint apps & loaded gear the Arctic flavored version has. But both are great!!
G.I.Spawn:
Thanks for the review. The colors is the kicker for me. It does the figure justice

uhm, yeah, it was released in another form...it's called POC wave 1 desert Snake Eyes. not sure how you missed that.

and does every topic on Snake Eyes have to include whining about how many Snake Eyes get released, as if it hasn't been discussed to death?
SNAKE_EYES1975:
I like the Blue..
arashikage tat:
Great review as always SB! I gotta say seeing the Tatum head on Jungle Duke makes me so much happier that they changed it to the one they have now
!!Snake-Eyes!!:
sweet! I want that SE figure and The Scarlet definately and the duke looks cool like that...great review!
