Walton Goggins Talks G. I. Joe: Retaliation

In a recent Interview with Collider, actor Walton Goggins talked briefly about his involvement with director Jon Chu’s upcoming movie G. I. Joe: Retaliation.

Collider: How did you end up getting involved with G.I. Joe 2?

Mr. Goggins: Well, Lorenzo [di Bonaventura] just approached me. He had been a fan since The Shield, and he said, “I’m doing this big budget movie and I’ve got this role I want you to come play.” If you can bounce back and forth between a studio movie or a big action movie, like Cowboys & Aliens or G.I. Joe, and you balance that out, if you’re so lucky, with a wonderful television show or working with Steven [Spielberg], what better career can you have? One of the reasons why I wanted to do Justified so badly, or wanted to continue once we got up and going, was that I didn’t have to live in pain, every single day. On The Shield, for seven years, I was emotionally fucking wrecked. It was rare that we were just laughing. For the last five years, especially, it was really painful. Justified is lighter in tone, and it’s nice to be around that and show up to work and wear that hat. It’s the same thing for movies. G.I. Joe was fun. Lincoln was serious. I’m going to go do Quentin Tarantino’s movie (Django Unchained), and that’s going to be seriously fun. Once you’re at the buffet table, you just sample everything. That makes for a well-balanced life.

Collider: Was part of the appeal of the G.I. Joe sequel the fact that it’s more grounded in reality, this time around, and not so cartoony?

Mr. Goggins: Yeah, it’s a very, very big part of it. Just because of my personality, for me, comedy comes from pessimism, more often than not, and from a real place. In some ways, I wish I could tell a joke. I’m not good at telling a joke, but I can say a line in a certain way that makes people uncomfortable because they don’t know whether to laugh or not, and I love that comedy. That’s my favorite comedy, when it’s grounded in truth. And, I think G.I. Joe is going to be a really good film.

Walton Goggins is rumored to play an original character for the film; Warden Nigel James.

Warden of Cobra Commander's prison cell as rumored.
Ronnie Dobbs:
My guess is Cross Country, or a Dreadnok. That would just be so fitting for him. Ya know?
Wylde Weezle:
I'm almost certain that's him in the trailer leading a captured Snake Eyes up some steps to a prison building.

Absolutely.
This.

He has a black suit.
(it would be cool to have a figure)

.

It's funny... when I read this, it almost sounds like he's trying to make us wonder if the last line he says is a joke.

I don't think that was the intention... just kind of a side effect of the flow of conversation.

LOVE this guy in Justified.

I hate the term "boots to the ground"
Master Henton:
"Boots to Asses" is best!!

Goggins is an awesome actor. I can just look at him and laugh! I love him in Justified & Predators.

Don't remember him in "The Girl Next Door" though. Timithy Olphant (Marshall Raylon) was in it though.
Melt:
What kind of behind the scenes drama was going on with the shield?

Never heard of it until now. He was great on that show. Loved the shield

I don't think he meant behind the scenes drama, I think he found the role a heavy weight on his mind. Goggins is one of those actors that puts all his effort into "becoming" the character he's playing, and Shane was an absolute train wreck in The Shield.
Funnel Rat:
I've always thought of cobbling together a Vic Mackey fig, but I now dream of getting a Warden Walton fig to make a Vendrell to go with it!

The Shield is my absolute favorite show of all time and Joe is my absolute favorite franchise. So great to have even the smallest of cross overs!
