Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura Hints A Possible Transformers - G. I. Joe Crossover Movie

Transformers-G-I-Joe-Crossover
After nearly a year of delay, G. I. Joe: Retaliation is finally out. The box-office success of the 2nd G. I. Joe movie may decide whether weíll see a 3rd G. I. Joe movie or not. However already, Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura is hinting another G. I. Joe movie but this isnít an ordinary G. I. Joe Movie as you think it is.

Ever since the rebranding of G. I. Joe as "A Real American Hero", the mighty bond between the franchise and Hasbroís Transformers is a strong one. In fact, Transformers Franchise began because of G. I. Joe; it was an idea to make transforming vehicles for Joes and Cobra led to the birth of the Transformers Franchise.

There had been numerous crossovers between the two brands; from the Cartoon to Comic Books. However, certain recent laws prevented TV Crossovers in modern times. An idea of a proper Transformers-G.I.Joe Crossover never went away however. This was clearly seen in the brief project named "Unit-E".

With the success of Michael Bayís Transformers Live Action Movies and the recent G. I. Joe: Retaliation, the producer is hinting a Live Action Transformers-G. I. Joe Crossover. At a recent interview Mr. Lorenzo Di Bonaventura expressed his opinion.

"I guess itís possible. I donít know. I think I probably at this moment, I resist it. I donít know necessarily why, but I just think thereís so much thatís so rich in the mythologies that I donít think they need to draw from the other. I think, I didnít rule it out for me and I think those things have somehow for me, sort of in the past, they made me feel like a little bit cynical exercises in just drawing money out of something. Itís not to say you couldnít do it well, but both these properties have such rich mythologies with so many characters, that you could go a lot of movies before you start running out of ideas of what to do. But itís not to say, if we found the rightÖ Iíd hate to set out to do that, but if I heard a story where we went, ďOh my GodÖ,Ē I could see a story right now about machination, machination of war and that could lead you sort of intrinsically to a Transformer. I think in general, Marvel is doing it within their own universe, right? And so it doesnít feel gimmicky in that way. I think thatís what I would really try to resist."

What do you think of this latest development? Do you think it's work? A hit or a miss? Let us in on your thoughts, over at the thread attached to this News Post.

Uhmmm, no.

Transformers and G.I. Joe should be kept in their own separate universes. Just because it's been done numerous times in comics and our back yard. I don't see how Hollywood could do a Joe/Former crossover and do it right.
TARGETSIX:
Sounds like the recipe for compounded suck. Don't do it, just walk away.
AlecZeal1989:
It would just be another Transformers, except they would give Josh Dumal a codename and say he is a Joe.
CVdelgado:
ive been thinking of this for awhile. if they want to increase the power of the joe brand, pairing it with transformers is a great way to do it. i dont know if id jump right in with a full length live action movie, but i think a series of short toon movies, like marvel does with the superheroes would be a great idea.

and the transformers movies would have been better if thy had been joe/transfoermers and lennox could have been a great duke.
Duke11B:
I always thought the NEST team from transformers could pass as Joes. Josh should have been cast as Duke

Well, they can't even get a Joe movie right. I like CVdelgado's reasoning. Transformers is far more popular than GI Joe right now. If a crossover movie (and toys) help the Joe brand, they should go for it.

I just can't see it being worse than ROC & Retaliation.
Dunedain:
I think it would be cool, but should only be done after the G I Joe franchise has been "established" more as a huge box office presence, like Transformers and its 3 movies. Let GI joe have 2 or 3 more succesful sequals like Retaliation and then "marry" the 2 franchises together.
Sneedlebarp:
As much as Bay is hated for his explosion style of filming, maybe replacing the generic military from the TF movies with Joe and Cobra (maybe even IG if done right) would take the blame off of TF and Joe for their individual shortcomings.
Shin Densetsu:
It could be cool if done right. I wonder who would direct though? I don't think all fan would be onboard with Bay's depiction of Joes. NEST was cool but since they were secondary characters, Bay and co didn't make them stick out as much.

If this is to ever materialize it might be better to have a director new to both brands and have Bay stick with the Transformers movies and Chu with the GI Joe movies, but new guy for the mashup movies.

There is the potential to be epic but also the potential to be equally as bad.
skinny:
his responses to the question asked sounds to me like he would not even consider it. he used the words resist and draw away from each other and last resort when you run out of ideas.
It also sounded like he did not know the Avengers existed in comic form before the movie, that Marvel made those other movies, Hulk Cap Thor Iron Man and then decided to make a movie with all of them and call it the Avengers.

I read it as him saying anything is possible, but unless a really great script comes along, it aint gonna happen.

I made a Joe Transformers film with Joes as NEST and I have to agree with him. You need a really great script. In my case I needed a great budget...

There's a law against crossovers, seriously? Who came up with that one?
rusty:
How much of our tax money did it cost to pass this law? I want a refund.
Rainbow Viper:
Well...I have to admit. I'm no Transformers fan really but...a live action version of Black Horizon would be pretty dope. Joe Colton captured and taken hostage in Cobra-La. Golobulus and Unicron being the big bads. I'm down.

I don't know how both GI Joe and the Transformers could even defeat Unicron though. Him being in there, he would probably just eat the Earth and that's the end of the movie.

It is to stop over-promoting materials. Also you canít have a Toy Commercial playing during a TV Show based on it. Peter Cullen mentioned these points long time back when The Hub was starting IIRC. He was not happy either and said time have changed but it is for the good of the children.
generalhawk:
My personal opinion is that if they wanted to do a cross over, either Transformers 2 or 3 would have been the best way to do it. Either with the battle in Egypt of 2, or with the retaking of Chicago in 3. The problem is that it would seem that they are now just copying Marvel. I suppose if it is done right then it would be fantastic, but to try and please two fan groups plus the general public is extremely risky.
sn8ke3y3s:
I say go for it down the road!! Anything to energize the G.I. Joe brand is a good move in my book!
Superjoe74:
I am a fan of the TF and Joe crossovers and would like more products than what we have gotten from the SDCC line. If there were more for retail, I would be all over it.

Transformers was one of my favorite collections as kid and as much as I liked G1 and some of the later incarnations- I think the Transformers live action movies are terrible and juvenile. They are redeemable only in that they have slight nods to the original- like using the voice talents of some of the original G1 cast.

With that said- I would want a TF/ Joe crossover movie in a completely different 'universe' than what any of the live action series have done. I want the Joes more like their ARAH incarnations- not ROC or Retaliation versions, and as regards the Transformers, I would want them in their original G1 forms- Optimus would be a red Freightliner tractor trailer, Bumblee would be a VW Beetle, etc.

I think most of us like the transforming sequences in the live action movies but, none of us really like what our Autobots and Decepticons transform into..

I would be cool with a TF/ Joe cartoon. That could be better than live action movie...
Immortal_Joker:
VW would not agree to have their beetle in any movie that involves War, the beetle in the first TF movie was just a nod to his old form
Troops of Doom:
This is a horrible idea.

It was pretty much done with the first movie. The soldiers were a major part of the movie and could have easily been Duke and Stalker. So my point is there is no need. Unless it's the only way to get Joe back on the screen and get more good toys (see IM3, Spider Man, and Dark Knight toys to see that just having toys is not always a good thing).
neapolitan joe:
Lorenzo try to make a better third G.I.JOE's movie (2015?)...do not think about a crossover till 2016...
