New Information On Cobra Commanders Appearance In G.I. Joe:Rise Of Cobra! mtv_logo
Joseph Gordon-Levitt tells the MTV Movies Blog more about his appearance in G.I. Joe:Rise of Cobra! He will be wearing a mask, but it will not be the classic hood, as mentioned earlier this week. Rather than relying on digital effects, Gordon-Levitt put on hours of prosthetic makeup, to see a different creature altogether.

While inspired by the cartoon, Gordon Levitt states that the film is taking pains to carve out its own niche on the franchise. He also says “I think it maintains the spirit of it and all the fun, but it brings the character into three dimensions. It wouldn’t look good if you did an exact replica of the cartoon. You wouldn’t want me wearing a skin-tight bright-blue dictator’s uniform. It would look silly.”

    Neither.

    He's disfigured though...

how about no movie? then we wouldnt have to worry about some disgruntled yugo salesman angry at the world. On a plus side...MAX PAYNE looks freakin awesome.
zartan1:
that's it, I've offically lost hope in the movie. I had faith in this project despite the X-man costumes, smiling vipers and Marlon Wayans, hoping for a ray of sunshine. Everything that comes out about it has sucked. This however, is the suckiest suck that ever sucked.
I wonder if all the prostetics will make him extremely battle-damaged or part snake?" I was once a man"...
Maybe they're just gonna fix him up to look less like a kid trying to grow a patchy beard, and make him look more like an adult. After all shouldn't the world's #1 terrorist be an adult or are they going to make him an evil teenage genius? Sure JGL is in his mid-twenties but damn, he sure don't look grown up.
RolandofGilead:
    Huh
copperhead33:
    oh dear god no.
He's not going to look like JGL in the movie.
it's going to be the worst movie ever.

if it's good, it'll be good. if it sucks it'll suck.
it's just another interpetation of G.I. Joe.
and we've had plenty of bad versions over the years, G.I. Joe Extreme, Sigma Six, that spy troops movie...

Really, We all lived through Cobra-la and still like joe.
this isn't going to be any differant.
CobraCoffee:
    Well,

I have gotten over the casting of JGL. You see I wanted someone else also but...after letting it sink in.. I am ok with it now and I hope he does a good job. I watched Stop loss and a few other movies and kinda began to get curious about how he's gonna play it...but anyway, they make old CC a snake and I take my chips and leave the table.

heatviper:
I actually like Jgl hes actually a pretty talented actor but the joe movie is gunna suck that is a given!
HissCommander:
wait, in the cartoon we never see cobra commanders face anyways do we?

i never read the comic books, do you see it in there?

So if he looks disfigured or something does it really matter? maybe thats why hes angry and wants to take over the world in the first place
Freedom:
    "Creature" = snake

Rex's parents were attacked by a cobra while on vacation in India. The cobra killed his father and impregnated his mother. When born, he looked like a lizard, so his mother named him Rex after Tyrannosaurus Rex. She hoped naming him after the King of Dinosaurs, it would give him strength and keep him from being made fun of.

Unfortunately, Rex was picked on by the "in-crowd" and completely envied the captain of the football team, Conrad Hauser. He vowed to make Conrad suffer one day. He gathered all the downtrodden and created the terrorist group Cobra.

    Rex will have his revenge!
RolandofGilead:
I doubt seriously that he'd be any sort of snake. It didn't work for most Joe fans with the animated movie and it certainly wouldn't go over well with most film goers. At least I hope it wouldn't. My impression is that this take on Cobra Commander is going to be the classic (read: tired and overused) Phantom of the Opera/Dr. Doom/Darth Vader theme of a man's soul becoming as twisted as he is physically.

To tell the truth, while I'm very open to this new movie, I can't understand this fixation with giving EVERYONE a back story. When I was a kid, I wondered what Cobra Commander looked like, sure, but I never cared where he came from, or why Destro helped him, or what the Baroness' motivations were.
copperhead33:
i don't think we have to worry about the snake.

I'm putting my money on him being a American soldier. and it going like this:

    1) on a non sanctioned mission, something goes wrong, gets his face blown off or something along those lines.

2)He comes home, disfigured and, due to the fact the government had dissavowed his mission, and status,
bureaucracy and red tape prevent him for reconstrunction surgery, or any sort of benefits.

3)disscharged from the military, he can't find any sort of work, grows dissillusioned with his government. Watches the rich get rich, and the poor stay poor, he becomes bitter, and a little unhinged.

    4) starts holding underound seminars and lectures, preaching about the evils of corporate america,
and thats the start of cobra.

That's very similar to origin of Snake Eyes.

Except for the last part, lol.

make him shoot snakes out of his eyes and give him a catch phrase spewing sidekick, and this could be the greatest movie ever!

I can live with that, sounds a little Snake Eyes gone wrong, but I can live with that.

Please anything but Cobra La like background, my heart could not take that. :(

Oh yeah, and I say used car salesman all the way - CC fits the type (no apologies to any used car sales men out there - offense MEANT!! )

    .
RolandofGilead:
While that sounds pretty accurate to me, I wonder how the general public in this present climate will react to a story where the military veteran is the bad guy.

I disagree. Many had no problem with the animated version of CC. Hard to say what "most" people accepted with so many on either side of the fence.
spacemonkeymafia:
Well what is everyone so pissy about with the interview.....as vocal about this movie as I am...I cant see what was bad about that interview????
Lantern_Lad:
Maybe he's horribly disfigured... who knows? At this point if the producers want to keep people happy we need to see some images.
Roadblock Recall:
prosthetic makeup usually looks way better than CGI anyways.

I don't know man... take Batman Forever Two-Face and compare it to The Dark Knight's...

That's definitely one of the rare cases where CGI worked better... it seems that it's getting better all the time.

Some of these responses are real winners as usual. I'm by no means saying that this will occur.....although I'd bet my FREAKIN HOUSE on it!......but in the event that those of you that decide to do a 360 and trickle back on here 8/7/09 and say......OMG!! I CANNOT BELIEVE JGL PULLED IT OFF!! Need to be taken out back and shot..........
Irid70:
Good Lord. The actor actually names the voice actor, describes how he was an incredible performer, shows respect for that incarnation of the character, says they really don't think you can transplant the cartoon to the live action screen (guess what: you can't! it'd look ridiculous) but that he's trying to use that performance as some of his inspiration for his version of the character...and the slack-jawed among us STILL crap all over the guy.
Golobulous:
thanks for calling all of us who don't like this interpretation of cobra commander "slack-jawed"
    that is typical................................

    OK, SPOILER TIME

Rex in the military? CHECK - he's special forces along Duke and Ripcord, but he's speciality is medical-scientific (?)

Rex gets disfigured in a mission? CHECK

Rex comes home and becomes mad at the govt? NOPE: he never comes home. he's given for dead. Nobody knows he survived.

Rex is a snake-creature-mutant? NOPE - but he likes snakes...

    ...as far as I know.

CobraCoffee:
I invite you to go watch Stop loss.

It has not only JGL (Cobracommander) but also has Duke (Channing Tatum)

It was a good performance by both... worth watching.

Maybe you should reverse that statement when you come back at that time and declare us RIGHT.....Even though I dont understand why people are dissing this interview...I like how it gave props to Chris......

It was a very good movie... but I sure hope Duke doesn't have the accent...

I'm an advocate for this movie... at least for the 'watch it before you make up your mind' folk... but this is a bit extreme.

the whiners don't even know what they are complaining about anymore, they simply have to complain about everything that is revealed about the movie. they haven't thought through how ridiculous their positions are because they aren't thinking at all, they've trained their brains to simply have an automatic negative response.
Deckard:
Im sorry i gotta disagree. I thought stop loss was terrible and very micheal moore-ish.

well, you're refering to the message of the movie itself. I am simply talking about the performance of the actors.

Frankly, I found JGL quite fun to watch.

"Slack-jawed"? I thought name-calling was strictly for the low-brows here, professor?
spacemonkeymafia:
You know some believe it will suck others believe it will be great...why dont we all stop with the slight name calling and learn to agree to disagree.....just because you dont like what someone has to say....so what? Maybe the movie haters will be wrong.....maybe the movie lovers will be wrong.....but each side has the right to discuss this and talk about why we believe it will suck or why we believe it wont........stop with the name calling though....and some of us should no better............hint, hint!!!

I think the creature reference was what most were annoyed with

I mean if he ends up being part snake in the movie that would be stupid as hell.
copywrite:
...I'm sure they show him disfigured pre-Cobra Commander. It's not like he's going to be walking around half the movie with Two-Face make-up on. Or maybe they'll just have brief glimpses of his disfigurement like Darth Vader in the old Star Wars movies.

You guys are making too big a deal out of every piece of news that comes out. Just chill out and wait for some actual footage.
rockstarfrank:
So, why are they calling this movie GI Joe? Seems to me they are trying hard to make it about some other non related Joe thing...they should just let loose and forget Joe all together, why be bothered with all this canon stuff?
