It's also funny that the article states he was stopping short of making comparisons when it's clear he was pointing out a difference. Steel: KKKish?? It's f*&^%ing BLUE!!!!!!
Maybe he can wear a bonnet. RolandofGilead: Actually, I was worried about the hood being mistaken for something racist myself. Not that I'd buy it in a million years, but this is the same world that attempted to label George Lucas a racist against latinos for revealing that Jango/Boba Fett and the Clone/Stormtroopers were Maori under those masks in Attack of the Clones. numb007: I am not a fan of the actor who is playing CC but hey that's just my opinion. delta: Great find on that article.
The hood on a comic/cartoon character is ok.
I could see how it might look a little grand wizardish on a real person. Tracker: Wasn't that the point of the hood? He's a "bad guy" after all. Devil King: Quote:

i dont have hi hopes for this movie at all.....Transformers was horrible...and im sure this will be two...;( Nemesis*Prime: I'm probably going to get no end of grief for saying this, but I'm rather intrigued to see how the movie version of Cobra Commander will turn out. The KKK remark I actually thought was spot on, because in my mind CC's 'mask look' always struck me as being inspired by that particular criminal organization. Cobra is supposed to be an American-born terrorist organization and when you think of stateside anti-American groups the KKK is at the forefront.
However I also understand the producers wanting to do something new as well. I never liked either the comic or cartoon origins as CC which is why he's always stuck out to me as being one of COBRA's less charismatic figures. The Cobra-La origin was too over-the-top and the comic origin was too lame (used car salesman turned super terrorist mastermind . . . riiiiiiight).
The movie origin of the Commander however being ex-military makes more sense to me, especially if he's ex-special ops. Imagine someone, a military professional whose spent a good while working in counter-terrorism getting burned by his own government. He'd already have a significant amount of knowledge to build his own organization and intelligence network.
So yeah I'm looking forward to this new take on the Commander. Not that the movie might turn into a total train wreck but I'm still optimistic. CobraCoffee: They can do the hood. It's not KKK-ish. They just need to make it ride on his head right. Almost make it appear to be "Wet" cloth so it molds a little to his skull. But, come on. Stop selling out. Bad publicity about anything only helps the movie copywrite: I'm glad they aren't going with the hood. It would look ridiculous. The helmet was always better. delta: Quote:

CynthiaCM: I would have liked to see the hood used, but I'm keeping my mind open to a new look.
However, I really don't think the KKK connection is a valid reason not to use it myself. Cobra Commander is a villain. We're supposed to hate the guy. That's why he's, you know, the villain. I've seen movies that had the KKK (and their slimy ilk) as the antagonists in movies before, so I don't really see what the problem here is... especially since CC isn't actually a KKK memeber.
Ah well. I just hope their re-imagining is cool. CobraCoffee: Quote:
Originally Posted by delta Nice thought, but what material would look like that? | I don't know.. I guess since it's 10 years in the future it could be some sort of nano-fabric that acts as a non-removable mask and protectant. Maybe they can get a marketing campaign with Armor-all
ahah! Gentleman: Gee DiBonaventura, you should just shut up and let others do the talking.
What a pile of BS.
I'm all for a new take. The film NEEDS to be a new take. However... the hood being KKKish? Kids have been PLAYING with hooded Cobra Commanders for how many years? Fuck this shit.
And I always thought the hood was CC's most terrifying look. Quote:
Originally Posted by CobraCoffee They just need to make it ride on his head right. Almost make it appear to be "Wet" cloth so it molds a little to his skull. | Oh yes. As if his disfigured face would always be sweating or something. That's what I'd call disturbing. TheLongestDay: I cant wait to see what JGL does with the character! I have alot of faith in that guys ability-hes VERY underestimated... Gentleman: Dude.
I TOTALLY see him replacing Ledger as the Joker... rob0213: I really want to see a pic of CC now. I'm curious to know what they are gong to do with his look. Got no problem with the hood myself, he is after all, a bad guy. You're not supposed to like him. Darklon: This movie was in the toilet for me a long time ago. Around the time that I saw photos of the maskless Batman costumes that all the Joes are wearing (all except Snake Eyes, who should have Batman pants, but instead has cargo pants). Seeing pics of Storm Shadow's ridiculous ninja outfit, then finding out that this punk ass kid would officially be taking on the role of Cobra Commander simply took things out of the toilet and put them in the sewer.
I have such little faith in this movie at this point that I kind of hope it just gets worse from here on in. I hope that Zartan is now an Asian girl and a goodguy who's skin turns red in moonlight. I hope Van Damme is in the movie, reprising his role in the equally awesome Street Fighter flick (Hey, they made GI Joe Street Fighter figs, it could happen). I hope it is revealed at the end that General Hawk and Cobra Commander are brothers (Hey, it worked when they took a multi million dollar piss on Transformers), but with this actor Cobra Commander would be young enough to be Hawk's son.
Anyway, I'm not typing this stuff to rile anyone up, nor am I particularly angry about any of this. Cartoons and comic books generally don't translate very well to live action. Ignorant producers who would rather write their own story than follow the 25 years of tradition tied to their title make things even worse. If you've ever seen Kevin Smith talking about how the Superman movie he almost worked on, but dropped off of because it would have featured a Superman without a costume who couldn't fly because it looked fake, you know what I mean. Based on the KKK mask assesment, I can't wait to see the Voltron Movie, where it's decided that 5 lions combining appears sexual in nature, and so the lions will transform into their own individual robots. Perhaps the Masters of the Universe movie will be cancelled because it is perceived as being offensive to members of the S&M community.
Anyway, thanks but no thanks on the GI Joe film. theprocess: I'm worried he might look like serpentor... justingodlien: Wouldn't it be wonderful if JGL was just playing CC in all the back story flashback parts but then they pulled a Se7en on us and all of a sudden Kevin Spacey was in the movie as a total surprise? Maybe not Kevin Spacey as the Commander, moreso Willem Dafoe in my opinion. Pit Viper: If I knew they were going to go with his battle helmet look I would be OK with this but I doubt his mask will look anything like anything Cobra Commander ever wore. SNAKE EYES: The KKK thing is just total B.S. they just want an excuse now, so when he wears a totally unrecognizable mask in the movie or first promo shot the fans can't complain as much. I mean he wore the hood in a childrens cartoon and no one that I know of ever raised a fuss about it, but now it's an issue. So a child's toy and a cartoon character the hood is ok, but in a movie it is a no no. I smell a whole load of B.S. being shoveled by Lorenzo di Bonaventura :( Pyroclasm: Maybe it's a mask like WildCATs' Grifter. Cloth, but not an over the head mask. As a kid, I thought CC looked like a human Ghost Monster (Pac-Man). As a teenager, I thought he looked KKKish. Thought I should try and join them just for the hood. Then I realized they were rascists and my hispanic blood would probably not sit too well with them. It's all true! (Except for the part about joining the KKK.) Cobra88: Willem Dafoe would of been a better CC ! that guy can play creepy and is a great actor! TheLongestDay: Ive always imagined CC as a younger-smaller guy,but one with great intellect far beyond his years.
Almost as if he were a child genius but hid it and never realized his true potential until he started "becoming" Cobra Commander.
Plus if you read Snake Eyes: Declassified Id say JGL is as good a fit/likeness as you could get.
Trust me guys, just watch Brick-this guy has the acting chops to pull it off! Gentleman: Quote:

A brilliant, mad-scientist sort of angle. He's beyond "right" or "wrong": his only true motivation is... playing God.
And I actually like this take. While the whole Cobra-La deal was VERY awkward, the nobleman-scientist background for CC wasn't too bad. If you take that concept (forgetting the Cobra-La aspect) and combine it with the more serious and sinister CC from the comics (discarding his background as a used cars salesman or whatever), well, you may end up with an interesting new take on CC.

Oh well one less movie to see next year................. Shin Densetsu: Alright, first off, I see no resemblance between Cobra Commander's hooded or battle masks and KKK hoods. Not sure why Bonaventura would even worry about that, that certainly came out of nowhere.
Second, Cobra Commander's voice in the cartoon was supposed to sound the way it was, that entire cartoon was aimed at kids, what did he expect? The late Chris Latta was an excellent voice actor, if they needed a more menacing voice, he could have done it easily. The guy voiced Starscream for god's sake.
With that said I hope we get some armored battle mask of some sorts, I like the battle mask in the comics a lot, it served a purpose and it served damn well. I was never too fond of the hood. Quote:

| Bonaventura is the producer, I believe Sommers is the director. Now, Bonaventura was also listed as a producer last year for the Transformers movie. Michael Bay made a huge public stink about Bonaventura requesting his name on certain credits(I think for writing), and Bay was pissed because he said Bonaventura didn't do anything with what he wanted credit for. I forgot how it was settled.
Now, from what I've seen, Bonaventura basically oversees the project, and talks publicly about it. Ultimately the decisions for the movie seem to rest on the director, and Hama as consultant. Quote: |

he will sport a new mask that is neither from the cartoon or comic.
| teemu8: this movie will suck! Cobra!!!!!! i<3COBRALA: welp there goes the last bit of my hope Shin-Gouki: You know I hope this movie does well, and all the witless masses eat it up so we get a strong return from the 25th line after the movie crap. But as much as I am trying to hold out some glimmer of hope everything I am hearing says it's just not going to be GI Joe Deckard: wow they are just really letting out how bad this movie is gonna suck. Screw waiting imma say this now.... I TOLD YA SO!!! :> FTW! Imperial_Serpentor: wow... people bitching because Cobra Commander will have a different mask. "this movie sucks" "it's not GI Joe" "I told you guys, it'd suck" so on and so on....
Just because it's not the same dosn't mean it can't capture the spirit of Cobra Commander. Something like the Cobra logo ski-mask form GI Joe Reloaded would work well.
The thing is, I don't think either mask would translate well to screen; I mean the G4 guys' one is totally accurate to the mirrored battle mask, but it looks totally campy (which is fine for G4 and Cosplay, not so fine for a movie) and wether or not the hood would invoke the KKK, it'd just slide around and be silly... and to people who didn't grow up with it, even in animation it looks silly.
"Cobra Commander really isn't funny anymore, though since his uniform includes wearing a bag on his head, there's a limit to how unfunny he can be at any given time," Warren Ellis in reference to GI Joe resolute.
Sorry guys, I think this is for the best. Lantern_Lad: Quote:

Sorry guys, I think this is for the best. | I agree. The helmet was cool, and by far my favorite version of CC (though, I'm working on the hood for Haloween and I think if it's held down by an internal chin strap it will retain position & shape), however it would look silly... too reflective. Looks good in a toon & figure, but that's about where the line is drawn... Doesn't mean I wouldn't have bought one from the guy on eBay if I could have afforded it...
As a whole, nothing that was said in the interview really put me off of the film... though I do think the KKK comment was dumb... were they looking at white pointy hats? Damn, the Death Eaters in Harry Potter have pointy hats and look more clanish than CC would, and that based off of a CHILDREN'S BOOK! AlleyViper47: They have almost everything wrong in this movie and I don't see how it's going to work for me.
To say CC's hood is too KKK is well ok, but thats CC.He wore a hood. In battle he wore the helmet.
I feel bad because I have always wondered why they haven't made a GI Joe movie and I always wanted to see the day. What I see doesn't seem right. But I'll wait for the movie.
Just disappointed......thats all I can say. A.V.A.C.: perhaps he looses his hood in the movie and gets a hockey mask instead. his favorite weapons are machetes, pitchforks, and pic-axes. Imperial_Serpentor: anyway you think CC is getting shafted with a new mask... let's look at another cartoon/comic (anime/manga to be precise) to movie adaptation coming out next year. compare:
