Hasbro's Official Statement Regarding It's G.I. Joe: Retaliation Toy Line - GI Joe News
Gyre-Viper:
ROC becoming POC. POC hiatus'ed from Jan 2010 to AUGUST (sound familiar?).The 30th put on some version of limbo hiatus for the film toys which are now on hiatus themselves??? while Renegades gets hiatus'ed for this film release which is now hiatus'ed because of itself? Are the toys even selling at this point? Will they even have*traction 9 months from now? I mean I am far from being able to tell Hasbro what does and doesn't work. I am just asking questions. And trying to figure out where they are coming from. Am I missing something?
RogueWingnut:
Now the crap really hits the fan.
Deftones1982:
OK, what will they release then till the movie hits the theatre?

Hence the question at the end.
Now is the summer, fall, and winter of sorrow.
Superion:
I'm sure the retailers will be just fine with this and it will not affect their willingness to order and stock product now or in the future </sarcasm>.
DrKain:
Wow, we got screwed out of a 30th anniversary for this, way to go Hasblow. I'm not picking up a single movie figure until I see the movie, so you can guess what that means.
sithlordsmart:
If we buy them more will come.... In 9 months.
Steve T:
Wow.

So, nothing aside from wave 1 (maybe wave 2 if they made it that far) at retail until next year? Holy smokes!

This IS going to be a long 9 months.

Vintage Joe, here I come!

Oh wait, we have Dollar General.
RogueWingnut:
Those POC restocks at my grocery store are now screaming my name.
Raw Dog:
Hasbro, in their statement, says that Joe is an ongoing consumer franchise and that only the majority (not all) of the movie line has been postponed till the movie's release. To me that means we will still see Joe on toy shelves (he's ongoing) from now until then. We just won't see figures of the Rock, Bruce Willis, DJ and the rest.
UMAN:
sigh. mass butthurt in 3.. 2..
drunknmunky:
Seriously the line and movie are in deep trouble. I'm really hoping this isn't the end.
DarkHorse:
I'm sure they'll release more DG waves in the meantime. You guys are lol, it's hardly Hasbro's fault, and even all the smarks didn't have a clue about the DG stuff until a week or so before it hit.

At least we'll all be saving some money!
Grippen:
Nothing new here, off course this is bad for the retailers because there is no movie to promote these toys this is specially problematic for the vehicles. But as I said nothing we didn't expect. So we will see wave 1 and 2 probably 3 with some luck but I think it will be rare.

For the summer we won't see anything new that is for sure. Now fall is another issue because there is always something there and over christmas. My idea is that we will see 1 or 2 waves of 30th probably mixed with figures we saw already.

I really hope so this would mean we will have an anticipated CG and Night Viper. If so its not so bad for us but its bad for the retailers especially the Retaliation line

Which in itself could be interesting
That means we might see large quantities of W1 and W2 and then W3/W4 next year mixed in with revision cases.
I'm curious as to what BBTS pre-order dates are going to look like in a week.
cobra22nd:
Now is the clubs golden opportunity to bust out that subscription. Oh, wait.....................

GI Joe is the pooch that keeps on getting screwed!
sbartek1974:
So then they are saying they have something for us. Just not more movie figures till next year. Like I said in other posts, it could mean Hasbro will be giving us what was planned for 2013 this summmer and fall. But I'm just speculating.
a1veedubber:
Maybe the lack of Christmas Retaliation product will mean a rushed-to-production Night Boomer????? I guy can dream right?
estanley1974:
I have never seen a more dysfunctional toyline/brand in my life. How does anyone look back at the last 10 years and not see how royally screwed up this toyline is? Is it just me or have they taken something that should be so simple and profitable and just made a complete mess? There is ZERO continuity. I would kill to be in the meetings when some of these decisions are made. Consistency should be at the forefront of any product. The consumer should always see logic and progress in the decision making. You go to the store, see Gi Joe, and you should have a certain expectation of what you are getting. Obviously, Hasbro just doesn't get it because they are all over the map. I look at LowLight and say wow, this is one of the best, mass-produced action figures I have ever seen. Then we get Retaliation Roadblock with a fixed hand and no foot articulation and wonder how could the same company make these two figures within the same line? Hasbro is one puzzling company when it comes to GI Joe. What a shame.
whitefox360:
I just want my wave 1 and 2 preorders shipped, man.
ksavelle:
wow greatest fail ever hasbro, no movie no toys! what next?

A Hasbro Rep was asked to comment on this:
JoeJunkie:
Well, in my area, none of the Walmarts in my area have had any GI Joe figures in quite some time (except for one Walmart that has a Rise of Cobra movie Destro on the pegs still at full price -- no joke!). Target hasn't had much besides Arctic Destro, which might as well be empty pegs. KMart doesn't carry them anymore (at least here). That leaves Toys R Us as the only place with them.

So it will pretty much be the same I imagine. . .sure, stores will put out the wave 1 stuff. It will either sit there from lack of interest, or it will sell through and not be replaced until after Christmas. It will either be empty pegs for a long time, or some stores will just replace the spot with something else. . .more room for Bakugan or whatever they happen to have extra of.

I don't think this will be the end of the line. It may even work out kinda good. Usually with movie toys stores way over-order wave 1 and the other waves never see the light of day. So maybe this way wave 1 will have LOTS of time to try to sell through, retailers will be ticked and order less, so wave 2 and 3 won't be on the shelves forever, and maybe the later waves will actually show up before the toys go on clearance.

Maybe this will become the new model for how to do movie toys!
sbarrett4:
I wouldn't be surprised if the DG figures were put into greater circulation (TRU, WM, Target, etc)as a stop gap measure.

On the plus side, this may mean that we actually see wave 3 and 4 and beyond when the movie does hit. Plenty of time for stores to sell their present stock of wave 1 and 2. Just pray they are smart and don't reorder the exact same stuff.
Krys:
Probably going to release nothing but Renegades Storm Shadows and Zombies now.

Right after I spent a small fortune buying them on ebay.

Sucks to be me.
SonOfMindbender:
I knew it was going to hurt. I just didn't know it was going to hurt this much. Wow, what are they thinking?
Jeffrozup:
I am not surprised by this news. My TRU pulled all of the retaliation stuff the day the movie was announced it was pushed back and the store manager said it was taken off the floor "until further notice."

I now believe this was NOT a coincidence and they got word to do this given this press release by Hasbro.
emags:
9 months to see Retaliation figures, which collectors generally were not very excited by. I'm skipping Retaliation figures, so how many months until we get something similiar to PoC ? Likely over 1 year, if at all.

So, I'll be collecting, Oktober Guard, FSS, Canadian Convention, customs. Notice one thing....none of them are made by Hasbro. That's just sad.........
Talisman:
No, no, no... Hasbro, please, I am begging you not as a fan but as a rational human being, PLEASE STOP DOING THIS! It's hurting everyone involved here!
FirstOne:
It sounds to me like what has shipped to the stores is going to be it. Hasbro is probably going to hold the rest until early next year.
blackbarn:
There has only been a weak trickle of Joe product in my city for the last year anyhow. Wal Mart has a couple vehicles and doesn't stock figures at all. Target stocks a few figures but barely ever gets a new case in. Walgreens occasionally gets a decent case but every time I go it's been picked over already.

So what if Hasbro pulls movie figures now? G.I. Joe is nearly dead at retail as far as I can tell! Has been for many months! This latest debacle changes nothing.

Wake me when Hasbro actually wants to sell Joe product in good quantities and stores want me to buy it there.

Aren't all of the GI Joe figures etc made by Hasbro? They might not be sold directly by Hasbro but I believe all items from the GIJCC, Joe Con, SDCC etc are Hasbro products.
Caravankidd:
So no movie for 9 months.

No toys for 9 months.

No new cartoon even though Hasbro owns their own television network.

Leaving the comic books in the remaining comic book shops as the only thing promoting GI Joe right now.

I don't know much about marketing but not having things for kids to buy doesn't seem like the best way to sell a brand. Feels like we have all the elements for a great brand but Hasbro doesn't want to put more into it than the hard work of a few toy designers.

Or your manager is going to buy them for himself and sell them or hold them due to the outrageous market value thats about to hit.
MonkeyBoyZ:
Maybe Hasbro will ship Kwinn 12 per case in the mean time.

I kid. This is a smart move on Hasbro's part as it minimizing overhead for toys that won't ship to retailers. It keeps GI Joe in business over the longer term but is rough for the short term for the people who collect it. I don't see this as the end of the line at all. I would not be surprised if there are GI Joe offerings of some sort between now and then. I do feel bad for the designers of the GI Joe franchise. I can picture them getting the run around with what they are supposed to be working on.
Black Llama:
I said this yesterday, they will shelve the product until Xmas time and release it then to build hype for the movie. I imagine we'll start seeing trailers for the 3D Gi Joe 2 movie starting in late November, they will space the toys out slowly for Xmas and then during the first part of the year we'll see ultra limited stock. Once the movie hits in March, that's usually when stores do their post Xmas reset and the Retaliation product will hit in droves. So welcome to a summer of hunting at Dollar General because that's all that we're getting. At least IMHO.

I don't see her doing that but all of the figures and ninja packs were already sold so we are just talking about those 4-wheeler vehicles, masks and swords.
SmokePants:
Called it.

Settle in for a dry spell, folks. Hope you like DG Joes and the forthcoming repaints of the DG Joes. (I don't)

can someone link me re: the DG repaints?
I keep seeing this mentioned in various threads, but would like more info. thank you
gk11973:
Well< I just picked up the Wave 1 figures this morning at TRU. Walmart and Target have the space for them set but are holding tight to the release date. I will grab the 3 packs and the vehicles as well since I am a completist. I'm not terribly impressed with the movie toys, but I want to support the brand. I really hope that Hasbro uses this extra time to improve the movie toys for next year. Better packaging, stands, and more accurate looks for a lot the characters would be nice. They said that when the movie was originally moved up, they were unable to produce movie accurate figs. Now is their chance to fix that. As for the retailers, I have a feeling that the movie stuff that is out there is gonna be a tough sell. I really hope they can come up with something to fill the back half of the year until next spring. Maybe go back to the cancelled figs from the last few years and get them out there, or even frankenstein some new characters quickly and get them out there.
rglass2:
When I get off work I'm gonna hug my DG joes and my early leaked Retaliation wave 1 and both of my 3 packs...then I'm hunting, may be the last time for a few months
manic mailman:
im confused so what little trickled out so far is available to sell?
but retailers that have not put anything on the shelves are to send the stuff back?

You said a mouthfull. Dead on accurate assessment of the public perception of these toys. It seems like every attempt to make a line out of Joe is half-assed, mis-timed and gets aborted before it even gets going. What must kids think GI Joe even is? It's a mess.

My two cents: make a strong main line of toys, keep it consistent. If a movie or something pops up do limited minimal tie-ins, small separate runs, at the same time as you continue supporting the main line. Movie figures should not replace the main line. Look how Avengers figures coexist with Marvel Universe figures right now for example.

Don't worry bro. Joe has been in toy aisles since the 60's. He is engrained in our culture, like Superman and Flash Gordon. I don't think he's going anywhere.
kennywr22:
This really isnt a surprise is it? I mean you can't sell movie toys without a movie. Not sure why many are blaming hasbro. They had the toys ready to go and in a rush. Paramount is the one that is screwing things up. Hasbro has made some odd/bad moves before but you can hardly blame them for this mess.
KINGOFNOD5:
well it's not like I don't have other toy-lines to waste my time with.
going to pick up what ever I see and I'm sure it can hold me over til next year.....I hope.

It's not so much that as there's nothing out there for the brand in the meantime. Unless they cough up a decent run of leftovers from PoC/30th, we're left with dust and empty pegs. Last I checked, that's not exactly a good way to sell toys.
