G.I.Joe Retaliation Cobra Night Viper Review

Night-Viper-Past-Present---Hisstank
1989 introduced G.I.Joe fans to new Cobra Troopers that until this day, remain fan favorites. One of those characters is the Cobra Night Viper. Sadly enough, this awesome troop builder only saw three versions, with two of those incarnations coming directly from the G.I.Joe Collectors Club (Although many would argue that the Pursuit of Cobra Jungle Viper is indeed the 4th)...well, that is, until now.

The final wave of G.I.Joe Retaliation figures brings this iconic character back in to the hands of collectors. Sporting his classic Night Vision Helmet and Sniper rifle, this figure is sure to make a lot of fans happy.

Our own jinx723 has completed an in-depth review of Night Viper and does a great job of covering every base possible. We've mirrored his images here on the front page, so make sure to check them out after the jump. Are you planning on owning this figure or are you skipping it all together? Check out the review then sound off here on the Hisstank Forums.

From card back "dossier":
Night Vipers stalk their prey in the dead of night. They specialize in nighttime fighting and blend into the shadows until it's time to strike. They use high tech night-vision optics to see clearly in no-light conditions, and they can hit their target even in total darkness.

Finally one of my favorite Cobra's the Night Viper is now in ME form. A figure that has been in many Collector's want list since the 25th/ME era. Hard to believe that it has been six years since we first saw those two 5 Packs. Though the new Night Viper isn't an exact ARAH update like the Alley Viper. I think Hasbro did a great job with the parts they used. Let's take a look,

Head: Jungle Viper v3
Torso, Arms, & Hands: Shock Trooper v1
Upper legs & feet: Skydive v2
Lower legs: Night Creeper v11

Accessories is the one thing Hasbro did not hold back with these newer figures. Night Viper comes with plenty of accessories for his missions.

Backpack: Elite Viperv1
Webgear: MARS Industries Officer v1
Satchel: Beachhead v11
Machete: Duke v42
Flashlight: Duke v42
Pistol: Duke v42
Rifle: Zartan v19
2nd Rifle: Duke v42
Shotgun: Joe Colton v1
Helmet, Visor & scope are all new sculpts.

Like any other figure it has it's flaws. It takes patience to get him to hold the 'sniper' rifle, but that's due to the handle design. The 'dog tag' battle stand is pretty useless. The hole on the Night Vipers feet are not shallow enough to secure the figure in place. Peg diameter is smaller than that of the hole on the feet. The figure tends to just fall over. Maybe it's just my figure. But if you have the patience to get certain poses without the stand, it's do-able. Overall the Retaliation Night Viper is a great figure. The three piece helmet and visor design is perfect, very reminiscent of the ARAH figure. He even has his arm patch from the ARAH version. Hasbro did a great job with the new updated Night Viper. The only thing that'll make it perfect in my eyes is having his ARAH backpack and rifle, which I'll be casting for my squad of Night Vipers.

Wish he had his vintage gun and the stand offs on his leg to hold it like the vintage...other then that hes perfect! Just like a I remember him...wish they would do more simple updates of the vipers like this...there's only a few more to make!
Dragasses:
that's an hawesome review, there jinxy.
clevelandhags:
IMO - a thing of beauty. Great looking figure, great review.
rdodger:
Great review. Now if we can only find these guys in abundance it would be awesome.

Ditto for me. The last shot with the vintage I really digged.
Konigstiger:
Actually like the vintage one better. Something just didn't translate to the ME. Some questionable weapon choices, too. Zartan's IR scoped VSS should have been the go-to for this one.

Ah, well, It's a good thing I got me some customizing "skillz".
poddie:
It's just too bad Hasbro is crippling distribution on this one by only including one each of the three new figures with wave 4, ensuring that almost nobody will actually see them.

This one is all on Hasbro... damn.

Let's hope they will carry through a few army builders to whatever wave 1 of the next line is, like they did with the Viper and Trooper in the 30th line.
Xerofall:
Yeah, there's gonna be a rush to get that vintage rifle, much better than what he came with.

Yeah infidelity going to need some casts of that..lol non on ebay atm....
paraviper:
What we need here is a revision case that is army builder heavy. A case with the following would sell like crazy.

x2 Night Viper
x2 Crimson guard
x2 Combat ninja
x1 Data Viper
x2 Duke
x1 Jinx
x1 Storm Shadow (wave 3.5)
x1 Cobra Commander
angelofdeath69:
It looks like a really good figure, been waiting for it for a long time.
HooveRtron:
Great pics! I like it more now than I did, but still am not in love with it. I didnt realize nearly every last part was used before, so no wonder it didnt look "perfect". I miss the design of the old legs and the attached rifle. These pics do the new one a lot of justice though. Kudos!
Dolemite:
Nice review. I can't wait to get my hands on a few of these guys.
Ford:
Still not a fan of this figure at all. There's nothing about it that makes me want to have it. The original figure was one of the last that I remember buying. Wasn't too crazy about that one either though. Who walks around with a rifle on their thigh? And then he couldn't even hold it correctly. Then there's the whole concept of the figure, Cobra never thought to give any of their other troops a night vision scope? I'd rather just see a black repaint of a Viper with a red mask and a sniper rifle. But that's just me. I'm glad other's like it. But even more glad that it's not one that I want, given how hard it seems to be to get it.
Mr Hebime:
I like him. Gonna troop build him till my wallet goes dry. Like him alot.
SmokePants:
I always thought the "Thigh Rifle w/ Gravity-defying Sling" on the vintage version was pretty dumb. Got three of these new ones on pre-order. I'm sure they'll be even cooler in-hand.
Fred Broca XIII:
Too bad I'll never find any of these in stores...or any other GI Joes for that matter...what's up Hasbro, why have there not been any Joes in my local stores for over two whole years now?
citizendan1st:
yeah , all I want is one night viper and one kwinn....

This is a great idea if you shit-can the unnecessary extra Dukes and Storm Shadow and Cobra Commander in favor of an extra Night Viper, an extra Combat Ninja and two more Data Vipers...then Hasbro only has to get it to the store level, which is where they fail every time, at least around where I live that is...
orezona:
MARS Trooper webgear...?

Ugh. I'm betting the pistol falls out of that ginormous holster if you even look at it wrong.

This is the ultimate kitbashed figure. Except for the helmet, that is.
Xerofall:
I'm probably in the minority, but I think Hasbro does a good job with their kitbashing. The webgear fits the look of the original figure (sans knife) and I'm looking forward to the figure.

They have more then enough parts now to really knock the rest out. All they need is specialized tooling for weapons, heads and proper accessories (DUMP GARBAGE UELESS GIMICK PACK INS FOR TEHSE PLEASE) and we can have the rest of the vipers and other figures they can easily kit bash and lets complete 82-92 end go out on a good note....

If you swap commander for another Night Viper or CG I'd order up.

Really wish hasbro put CG CCN Duke in the Night Viper case instead of the early wave repeats.

Dude is going to be so hard to find. Awesome review, thanks.
Laser Viper:
Great pics and great review!

Man! I love this figure! I remember having two Night Vipers (parents didnt let me troop build much back then) for my Cobra forces.

Too bad we wont see them at retailers until Christmas i would say, otherwise my wallet would be dusty right now.
rip_cord:
Nice review - thanks.
FlintWO2:
Nice review thanks for the pics. I really love this figure, and I loved the 1989 version as well. I would love to have a squad of 6 of these, but finding them in the store will be next to impossible. I think we all have a better chance of finding Sasquatch or the Loch Ness Monster. Thanks again Hasbro for putting the most sought after figures, in the hardest waves to find. :P
danielgogeta:
Awesome review! crossing fingers I can still manage to army build in the wild
serch:
Why would Hasbro geniuses would only release 1 figure on a revision case, with a bunch of unwanted figures?... now I may not be able to get one of my favorite cobra characters in the toy line
kevjul:
I just got my night viper and I gotta say im not impressed at all. First off the figures web gear is made out of a very soft plastic, feels like rubber. The backpack peg is very soft and feels like it will break right off. The helmet is so tight on the head that if you pull it off the head will come with it. Its a real pain trying to get the head out. Tiny and not deep enough foot pegs. Foot pegs are in the heel and not in the center. I have no idea why this decision was made. Figure looks good but was poorly made. Night viper was way over hyped.

Does the holster get in the way of the arm movement? It looks like it might, I've been concerned about that.

The helmet issue is a shame, but honestly, I don't intend on removing the helmet all that much.

Visually, the only thing I'm not crazy about are the lower legs. Maybe these POC Rock Viper ones (used on this Stronox custom) would have been a better choice:

kevjul:
No, the holster is ok in that regard. That viper ya got there is clutch.
CG82:
Not too keen on the lack of bodyarmour. I think the Alley Viper from retaliation torso wouldve been better as it has some molded on armour protection. I think the lower legs are too dinky and ninja like, the Hiss Driver legs I think wouldve been more appropriate imo.
stljoe:
Thanks for the review. Can't wait to get these guys.
TheRealDubya:
This was one my absolute favorites from the end of my original GI Joe buying run.

If I happen upon him in person, I'll grab it. Not enough into Joe ATM to get one online.

This is the most compelling image:

Yes, please another useless Duke figure. They can make him with handcuffs and beaten to a pulp. Duke needs to die in figure form as he did in the movie.

Uhhh... why are people saying this when Duke was easily the 2nd most popular figure from W3.5? Just look at the sell-out order... Combat Ninja, then Ultimate Duke. Look at pricing on eBay. Due to the extra head, people are army building him... there would be NO problem selling Ultimate Dukes.

And btw there is at least one more Duke we DO need... Ultimate Sunbow Duke. Once they do that one you guys can bitch about Dukes all you like, and if Hasbro decides to listen I won't care too much.

Yes, they repackaged the hell out of that original 25th figure... WAY too much... but since PoC all the Dukes have been winners. Well, not Ret wave 1 obviously.
Grippen:
Can't wait to have these in my hand. I intend to try a few ARAH backpacks I have with me on some of them. They can be the Comm officers of the squad or something. Also thinking of giving some of them the hiss driver lower legs. I wasn't sure in the beginning because I thought he would have some green parts but I see the entire lower legs are black. I used this part in a custom Night Viper I made a while back, eck the upper legs are even the same ones I used. Both the original and the suggested SE ones just scream Ninja to me. Let's see how they look.

Last the rifle issue, the problem with that rifle is that the trigger hole is too small which makes it impossible for the trigger finger to go in. If you manage to fit it inside the grab would much more stronger and stable. I will try to make the hole a bit bigger also without damaging the paint around.
rcjunkie:
Great review! Thanks, had to get me one.

I played with Joes from 82-86, during the Sunbow cartoon run. I completely missed the Night Viper entirely due to other hobbies later on in life. During the POC wave I was introduced to Jungle Viper which became an immediate favorite, minus tedious chore of posing. So recently, I really didn't care about all the hype with the ME update to the 1989 Night Viper. However, trying to complete my Retaliation Wave 4 he was a must-have. I payed the inflated price and I now have him in-hand.

A few complaints: 1. His trigger finger...wish it wasn't molded with the rest of his fingers...could just be the one I have. 2. The green paint app on his sniper Rifle tends to rub off easily when posing 3. Shallow foot peg hole on one foot...again could just be mine.

Other than the minor complaints, I see that he is a nice update to the original. He is definitely one of the coolest figs of the Retaliation line. I admit, I am a fan.

I still like my POC Jungle Viper however I added some Jungle Viper accessories to the Night Viper...hmm

POC Jungle Viper's visor fits in the holes on the side of NV's head.

Had it just been the extra trooper head as a Joe Trooper or special forces guy sure (or the night vamp driver as it should have been), but we don't need any more Dukes for sure...even an Ultimate one at this point...
instinct2784:
Cant wait to get get a few of these in hand... Definitely making my own team out of these
CG82:
I got six of them, while its a good figure its not a great figure worth all the dough most sellers want for it. The lower legs are the weakest part of the figure, they're just too thin and looks like he's wearing girdles for shin guards. The Night Creeper lower legs do not work, also they didnt bother to paint his pants above the armor. The Hiss Driver lower legs wouldve worked better. The shoulder holster thing is mediocre and lack of body armor a serious issue and same problem goes for the Range Viper. Hasbro its nice to make a retro figure, but they should throw in a modern body armor vest, sometimes they do, many times they dont which is also problematic. Plus the sniper rifle doesnt fit into his hand.

I rectified the lack of bodyarmor by adding raginspoon's cast mouse armor.

I will disagree with you on the lower legs. I tested the hiss tank lower legs on it and I really didn't like the result. Not sure why.
