G.I. Joe Rise Of Cobra Video Game Hands On Report

gijoe
Kotaku had a chance to try out the G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra video game on Xbox360 at E3:

What Needs Improvement?
Auto-Targeting: You hold down the fire button, and you automatically lock onto the nearest target and fire a constant stream of bullets at them. Once your target is dead, you automatically switch to the next closest enemy or destructible object. You can swap targets, of course, but for the most part you simply dodge the enemy while your magic, never-ending ammo supply takes them out. Some might say it hearkens back to arcade games of old. Others would say it's a boring mechanic that lacks any sort of challenge. I fall into the latter category.

Goofy Animation: The auto-targeting system makes trouble for your character's animation, as they twist about to face whatever you are targeting, even if you've moved past a destructible object you've given up on. It just doesn't feel natural, and it looks completely ridiculous.

Melee Misses: The game features melee attacks, but it really isn't the type of title where they work well. Perhaps it was just the character I was playing, but the clumsy punches I threw mostly failed to land, and when they did they didn't feel as if they were doing much. Holding down the melee button charges an attack that can send enemies flying, but trying that in the middle of a firefight got me killed more than a couple times.

What Should Stay The Same?
Fan Service: It's obvious that the developers have a strong understanding of the history of the franchise, and they're cramming the game chock full of G.I. Joe goodness. It might not be enough to excuse the game play as it stands, but it could at least make the game worthwhile to collectors and enthusiasts.

He'll fight for freedom wherever there's trouble, and the E3 show floor is no exception. We went hand-to-hand with EA's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra for the Xbox 360.

What Is It?
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is EA's game adaptation of the film adaptation of the cartoon adaptation of the 80's update to a military doll for boys. It's a scrolling 3D shoot-em up featuring drop-in anytime co-operative multiplayer starring a nicely rounded cast of characters from the film, comics, and toy line.

What We Saw
I played through several levels co-operatively with an EA operative. I played as Duke, while my guide played as red-headed crossbow maven Scarlet.

How Far Along Is It?
The movie is due out on August 7th, and the game needs to be out by then as well, so it's pretty far along.

What Needs Improvement?

Final Thoughts
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is essentially a clumsy 3D Contra game with G.I. Joe characters, right down to the destructible objects that drop medals when you shot them. I'd daresay that if you brought someone to the game without telling them what it was, covering up the story references, they'd assume that's exactly what this was. I'm not sure what I would want out of a G.I. Joe video game, but I'm pretty sure this isn't quite it.
Life4Dreadnok:
Can't Hasbro do anything right with this movie? They should have done a Call of Duty type first person shooter and it would have been a massive hit.
WVMojo:
What a shame...not that I had high hopes for a movie based game due to the history of craptacular games that have been based on movies over the past 10 years.

But man, finally a GI Joe game and it comes out playing like Ikari Warriors for the NES..hold down the shoot button and walk around pointing your endless supply of ammo at bad guys.

Such a shame...
Syn3sthesia:
Can't say I'm surprised by these news.
Tracker:
well it is a movie game so that not surprising as most movie game arn't that good

but i may still pick it up and judge for my self
rob0213:
Has anyone actually played a demo of this yet?
Troynos:
Like Contra? Awesome, can't wait. Love Contra.
gdztoyz:
Man, this was kind of disappointing, But I guess I should've known better. It's a MOVIE game...they ALWAYS suck! I suppose I'll rent it and give it a try... From the review, with all the Fanservice, it seemed as if their hearts were in the right place, it seems to fall apart gameplay wise. Like I said, I'm curious enough to rent it...but probably won't plunk down 60 bucks for it.

My ideal GI Joe game would be on the Star Wars Battlefront engine. Just give me a huge roster of popular classic Joes with different abilities and a whole mess of all the classic Cobra Troops and Vehicles to shoot at and blow up, and I'm good!
Viper_486:
Wow.
And I didn't think anything could suck worse than the film...
Thanks for proving me wrong, Hasbro!

Hasbro didn't make this game. not to mention there is no use of having a first person G.I. Joe game because if you can't see the characters, what does it matter who they are or if they are Joes?

I think for G.I. Joe it needs to be 3rd person so you can see the character you are playing with. I mean it is the Joe and Cobra characters that make us buy the figures, so when I play a Joe game I want to see Snake Eyes, Gung Ho, Scarlett, etc., etc.

Edit: GSC I didn't see your post until after I posted this^
I just saw L4D's post and hit quote. Then I went back and read through the thread and saw your post that is spot on.

that's because nobody involved with this movie, from the filmmakers to EA, took it seriously.

EA essentially believed that since the subject was from the 80's that making a game like from the 80's would work. sure it would, as a $9.99 download off of xbox live or PSN, but for what will be a $40-$60 retail release, not a chance. it looks terrible and sounds terrible.

the filmmakers were the same. they had no idea what G.I. Joe meant to people when they hear it and actually thought it was a blank slate to do with what they pleased. yes, Transformers redesigned the robots and told a new story, but the concept was the same. G.I. Joe redesigned the characters, tells a new story, and arguable creates an entirely new concept (not of the Joe vs Cobra dynamic but the G.I. Joe team itself). that's going to spell doom.

basically, this movie and this game had the opportunity to cement G.I. Joe as a viable brand in those mediums and both have blown it big time, and will probably set the brand back a decade with their blunders.

I was at E3 yesterday, I saw the G.I. Joe ROC vide game and it reminded me heavily of Contra. Just a modern version of course. I loved Contra back in the day, but I have to agree it was a little boring. Probably worth renting for 5 days, but after that you'll be burned out. The game doesn't look like it has much replay value.

The new Castlevania: Lords of Shadow looks f*cking spectacular though!
ChaplainAsst:
From what I have heard and seen, you have to give a lot of credit to the game designers. They actually fought for us, the fans, by trying to insert the 80s into the game. You can't have it both ways - it is either a movie game (which technically and continually the impress upon us in every interview - a movie game just rehashes scenes from the movie) or its an 80s game, much like the new monopoly. The developers wanted to make it more like the cartoon but HASBRO (yes, they did have something to do with the game) said no - and only after a lot of convincing were they able to even insert the old theme song and other aspects that were from the comics and cartoons. Yes, the auto aim stinks, but HASBRO wants the game for 8-10 year olds. I won't be surprised that you can turn this feature off. But don't slam the designers who have really tried hard to make this game fun for all of us. Go back and look at the Transformers video game and see what it is like to just put out a crappy video game to go with a movie. This game is not Transformers.
Cold Slither:
Some of the James Bond movie games have been decent. Way more decent than this look to be. I loved Contra also. When I was 13.
2009 is the year that the Joe franchise burns a fiery, joke-laden death.
Warrant Officer Flint:
Im excited to get this game, although a COD type G.I. Joe game would be sweet..

So it's OK to like G.I. Joe as an adult, but not Contra

Please don't put words in my mouth. If you like this game and it reminds you of Contra that's fine. I was expecting more. I was expecting something on par with modern video games. In no way was I saying you shouldn't like it.
D-Unit:
Nobody says anything nice about this movie or anything that has to do with it. I think this game looks good, and if it is a clumsy arcade-shooter with gi joe characters, then it's a game i've been waiting for since I was a kid, so i look forward to it. Anyone expecting "resident Evil 5" from this game in the first place was just getting their hopes up anyway
Cold Slither:
Yup, we shouldn't be getting our hopes up for anything GI Joe, that's been painfully obvious of late.
snakeeyes22:
Exactly as I was figuring about this, and all movie games.
Too much of a rush to hit stores in time for the movie. Great game engines take a long time to polish. And the very best game engines? Those are the one for the games that are announced, but not seen for 3 years, longer than it takes to make a film.

Hey, if it does well, maybe we'll see a sequel with more classic elements and improvements. I love what I've heard about all the fan service, I just hope earning it doesn't require painful, tedious levels. And please no selling downloadable ARAH costumes!
The Batman:
Hmmm.. sounds like I will be waiting for this game to come down to 20.00 before dropping cash on it. Ain't no use in throwing 60.00 on something I can probably beat in a few hours. I wonder if you can be both sides like on Transformers?

Yeah, like the doom of the movie and it's associated toy line is really going to make retailers order a ton of new modern era stuff.

The vehicles in the game are things I want to see made as toys. The gunship looks way bigger in there.
Baron Samedi:
Big shocker. /end sarcasm

You know, they could have ripped off Mercenaries and been fine.
foor:
Yeah, I watched the clips and pure disappointment. The developers kept hammering how they made it for the fans, and oh look, Snake Eyes has a sword. And then when asked why there's no online multiplayer, they said they wanted it to be a living room experience. What BS! This is a cheap cash in.

People pay for video games? I thought we all just waited for a friend to buy the game we wanted and go over their house to play it to death? XD

You take your reasonable statement and take it someplace else, Shin, before someone claims the 25th made so much money it's going to pull us out of the recession.

HartAttack:
I always said that the perfect Joe video game would be Snake Eyes infiltrating the Terrordrome and fighting the Cobra Heirarchy in a Metal Gear Solid style game.
LINK:
i agree with u 100%.

it looks like the developers got lazy and tried to make a 80's contra type game. if you check out game informer this month call of duty modern warfare 2 mag front cover there is a editors note that says gamers are getting wise to game developers just trying to make a buck and putting out undeveloped games that aren't truely completed yet just to meet a time frame release date to get paid. i feel that way, hence i don't buy new games anymore, only used.

That'd be dope as hell, but they'd have to shell out the big bucks and get Hideo Kojima to produce it.
footloose:
they shouldve used the old conflict desert storm formula. get a squad of four guys. hell even set it up to choose the 4 guys you want. ability to control all four indiviually(4 player online co-op) or as a squad. just like CONFLICT DESERT STORM. thats how this game shouldve been made. instead they just slapped together some garbage for the kids to get their parents to waste their hard earned money on.
hopefully EA will take this license and do something good with it. even a turn based strategy like Valkery chronicles would kick ass.

That'd be wicked cool! However, I'd like to see other joes involved too.
JamesxOnly:
All they ever needed to do was basically make a GI JOE version of BATTLEFRONT 2 with different skins for characters and go to town.
doc_mccoy:
God I cant wait until the movie, ROC toys, and ROC video games come out so people can drop all the negative bull shit and find something else to piss about. These threads make me question why I became a tanker.

So the game play may not be up to Gears of War or the entire package might not be as great as God Of War...but come on people! We are getting our first Joe game for any system since we were on 8-bit crap! Lets be thankful they made a game in the first place.

And as far as the contra references...who the hell didnt like Contra back in the day? I say bring the game home, play it, and then decide. What's $60? Buy it, try it, and decide.

I cant wait for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PitViper:
I'm not suprised at this at all. Every single clip or pic I have seen from this game looks like it was rushed. It looks like a game from 1st gen Xbox or PS2 that fell through the cracks. With this style of game and the charecter depth the Joes have this could have been the next Halo or Call Of Duty.

So much for that, I'll save my money for Madden '10...I wouldve prefered a fighter anyway. Something in the vein of Street Fighter/MK...that would have been awesome. Or maybe just an old school scrolling brawler. Open landscapes and leading a team of Joes through a night assualt on Cobra Island.....think of Rockstar's "The Warriors" with Joes....like I said, Madden 10.
