G. I. Joe 3 Filming To Begin Next Year

220px-Jon_M_Chu_2013
Merry Christmas Everyone! Here's a little Christmas Present for the Joe fans, especially the fans of G. I. Joe Live Action Movie Franchise.

Director Jon M Chu sat down with Coming Soon for a bit of a chat regarding G. I. Joe 3. Mr. Chu says that not only is the world building still coming together, but they have many surprises in store for the fans.

"I love being active in world-building, so we're working on "G.I. Joe 3" right now. We're designing tons of stuff, which takes a little bit, but to me, that's obviously where I like to push myself and where I want to be for a long time and get to know better...I'm excited to bring in new characters and fun things beyond Bruce and Dwayne that we're working on and some great villains, but we're forming those ideas now. I'm really excited - it's going to be a whole ‘nother level."

Regarding Channing Tatum's (Duke's) death, the director said:

"It all gets carried away again. They asked me about Channing and I don't know. You never know in these movies, and that's all I said, and suddenly it became "Channing Tatum might be back." To me, every possibility is open and we're writing the script right now and we're figuring everything out. It's an extremely low possibility when you kill somebody like that, it's pretty much it, but you never know with "G.I. Joe." We did that with Storm Shadow, too."

Though no release date is set for the movie, Mr. Chu says they're hoping to move into production next year.

"I think we're going to be shooting next year. We're pretty motivated to get that up."

Sounds good. I want to know who the "villains" are. I guess I'm a sheep, but man I get excited for these movies.
instinct2784:
Can't wait to see what surprises they bring in the next one brings!!
dukeeyes43:
I feel when people don't give us a direct answer about a characters fate it means yeah they will be back but I don't want to ruin the surprise. But here I think Chu being honest and doesn't know if Duke will return somehow.
Mapleleaf:
To be honest, I really hope Duke remains dead (and he is one of my favorite characters). I just think that bringing him back in any means would just cheapen the death they wrote-----AGAIN!. This character has now made the ultimate sacrifice 2 times - once for his bro falcon in 87 but as we all know was only in a coma after being speared in the heart by Serpentor and then for Flint in Retaliation getting him out of the way of an exploding truck. They have Roadblock in a good position as squad leader and Flint can really come into his own. The characters are in place and if need be bring in some that were left out this time like Scarlett or Hawk. If its absolutely needed for Duke to be back make it flashback scenes to establish Falcon as a character out for revenge against cobra and have Tatumn guest start this way but still have Duke himself be gone but not forgotten.

I still can't wait for the next one to be made cause I am really liking where Mr.Chu has taken the story. Just no Freaking zombies!!!!!!!!
Megastar:
Please leave Duke dead!
aussietrooper20:
General hawk should lead the Joes
Storm shadow becomes a Joe for good
Cobra commander cures himself into a human but has a snake voice
TronViper:
Please keep Duke dead and bring Destro back! Destro should seek revenge on Cobra Commander for leaving him in the Coffin ruins. Here is where the Iron Grenadiers come into play. Also they should put some new Joes in of course to bolster their ranks after the wiping out of 95% of the team. My picks are Beach Head, Crazylegs, Stalker, Lifeline, Mutt and Junkyard, Deep
Six, Lift Ticket.
thairestauranteur:
I always get a kick out of these so-called writers and producers who always say they were 'fans of G.I.Joe' from back in the days. You wouldn't know it if you watched their movies of G.I.Joe.

This is G.I.Joe. How or why would they kill off Duke? Duke is supposed to be the lead 'man of action' on the G.I.Joe team. At least since 1983! 30 years. Bruce Willis just stood around and collected a paycheck in the last film and everything hinged on the Rock; albeit, the Rock was exemplary in Retaliation but Channing Tatum and the Rock had an undeniable chemistry. Killing off Duke would be an extremely bad move.

Hopefully Chu and his bosses will take some better queues from the IDW and DD comics this time. They have such a wealth of good story that the usual brain-dead formulaic Hollywood rigamarole isn't necessary.

Here's to hoping they actually make a great script this time instead of falling down the usual path of mediocrity.
dragon:
glad hes on for number 3 he made sure what they look like as is from comics unsure about duke return his death was more violent than storm shadows death injury

Woo! Can't wait for more news!

BATs, I wanna see a sea of BATs like the Total Recall remake, I, Robot and Elysium!

I agree on Duke staying dead.
I like the idea of having him in flashbacks (if they really want Channing back).

I'm confused why they are making another one at all.

I like them don't get me wrong, but the whole point of them is to be a launching point to sell toys.

Obviously, the box office money isn't chump change but they are in the toy business not the movie business(I know Hasbro isn't making the movies), I just wonder if Hasbro eventually is going to go out of toys and go towards being a media/movie company that distributes minimal toy product.

It's just odd as a marketing strategy to make media that is supported by toys but not have a place to actually carry the toys you make.

Can't argue with this.

When the movie was being marketed, was in theaters, and when the DVD came out, the toy line was in stores: TRU, Walmart, Target, Walgreens, etc. The problem was the distribution: The trash wave 1 figures hung out alone for a year, and the greatness of Wave 3.5 and 4 didn't hit until after the movie/DVD hype had disappeared and the retailers had no reason to push Joe. If the movie hadn't been delayed for 3D production, then I think the toys would have lined up better with the movie and DVD releases, and things might have stayed better at retail. Since I would imagine that 3D would be planned in GI Joe 3 from the get go, hopefully we won't get that lengthy delay and the toys will line up better with the movie marketing this time...I hope.

Bring back Destro....Bring on a Classic looking Zartan with the Dreadnoks and Scrap-Iron. I'm ready for the Crimson Twins too.

I'm all for bringing Duke back. Have the movie based around his rescue at Cobra Temple or on Cobra Island. If Cobra is set up on Cobra Island it would make for an exellent way to introduce Shipwreck and make use of the Whale and the Flagg!

I can't wait.
Raw Dog:
I hope they bring Duke back. Channing Tatum is one of my favorite actors.

I can't decide if this is sarcasm or not.

Hasbro has been been making huge strides the last several years in doing exactly that: be an IP company that makes toys (Akin to how Marvel became an IP company that produced comics)
But that kind of shift is something that takes YEARS to accomplish, especially in the case of Hasbro which, outside of TRansformers and the NAME of GI Joe, doesn't have too much in the cultural lexicon on par with Batman, Spider-Man or STar Wars.

It's important to remember that practically every major media brand out there right now (short Ben 10, Power Rangers and WWE) all owe their current or past exposure to a successful live action film. Most people only marginally knew of Iron Man before his film was a huge hit. Transformers were just some toy (at best) before the live action film.

And again, the point Hasbro tried to do back in 2010 when they launched Renegades and Transformers Prime was to push the Hub as a venue for IPs, not just toy commercials.

In Joe's case, the movies are frankly going to do more to spread message of the brand than pretty much anything Hasbro can practically do. And since Paramount is primarily footing the bill for the film series, even a weak toyline like Retaliation will be profitable as Hasbro doesn't have to factor in media creation and marketing into those numbers as much.

Paramount and Hasbro aren't pushing forward with Joe 3 simply to make toys: the idea, I feel, is to create a marketable BRAND that can be used to drive a film series (and hopefully other merchandise). A successful film series will drive more toy sales than a cartoon on a premium cable channel, regardless of quality.

When Retaliation was being pushed (before and after the delay), I was seeing more retail support for the brand than I was in the years after RoC. Joe disappeared from pegs this fall because Hasbro had no media push to follow up the film and the line apparently wasn't a super hit to keep retailers on board with more high profile stuff (like Man of Steel and Iron Man 3) hitting stores as well.

Again, in the Joe movie's case, the toys are supporting the film, not the other way around.
