The director, Jon Chu, grew up with G.I. Joe as well, and it seems like this is the right team to be putting together a G.I. Joe movie. Why do you think they didn't do that the first time?

Wernick: Well, you know, it's funny. I think there were just a host of problems on that first one, just in terms of, I think, it was up against the writers' strike. And there was just a scramble to get it made. You know, Hasbro was pushing, and there were issues with toys and so forth. Like, there was a roll-out campaign. There was a whole complex issue of movie making and such that outside factors, and assassins kind of just -- you know, it's not for us to judge the first one. There were elements of the first one that we thought were great, that gave us the great gift of launching off into the second one with the bad president, which we thought was a great launching point into "G.I. Joe 2."

When IGN asked what they have in mind, the writers said they might bring back The Baroness:

"We were able to chat with the G.I. Joe Retaliation screenwriters, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, recently and discovered that the pair are actively in the process of breaking the story for the third film. The Zombieland co-writers were looking at a wall of story ideas and notes for G.I. Joe 3 as we spoke. When asked what sorts of story ideas they were playing with, the scribes said that they wanted to “resurrect the Baroness like a zombie” in this next one. Now, the Barnoness didn’t actually die in the first film, so she wouldn’t need resurrection as such. We think the team just has zombies on the brain as they’ve recently launched their Amazon Zombieland pilot. They also may have meant that they’d like to see the character receive a “proper” treatment versus what was – in the minds of many fans – an odd interpretation of the iconic Joe villainess in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. It’s interesting that they called out the Baroness specifically, though, as she was one of the few villains not mentioned in Retaliation."

The following statements were made during the main presentation:

"Partially offsetting the difficult comparisons in Boys [Category], we experienced growth in MARVEL, NERF and G.I. JOE products in the quarter.

G.I. Joe is another brand within Boys which grew this quarter. G.I. JOE: Retaliation has performed well and to date has earned more than $ 270 million at the global box office. Paramount has indicated they will begin working on a third G.I. JOE movie and we look forward to working closely with the studio and filmmakers. We are pleased with the strong reception to the film and interest in the brand globally."

Although, Hasbro didn’t mention much about G. I. Joe on their main financial statement, a question was asked at the Q&A session regarding the future of the brand.

Is there any sort of impact to be expected on bottom-line in participation of G. I. Joe: Retaliation?

Hasbro’s CEO Brian Goldner answered the question.

"We have to see over the longer term how that looks obviously. We do participate a bit in the box-office and we are also very excited of the long term opportunity with that brand. You know, the update over the weekend we saw box-office results coming out of China and now Global Box-Office is over [US$] 300 Million and we are up significantly in major emerging markets if we talk about box-office there… especially the emerging market for 3D. Great box-office results in China, in Russia and Brazil. So, it portrays great things for the brand in longer terms"

It turns out that Lee and Jon Chu came up with the idea for his prison breakout scene in the beginning of GI Joe Retaliation and his subsequent revenge later in the film. This title gives us a very, very detailed look at what went on behind the scenes of GI Joe Retaliation, from concepts, filming, pre-visualization, special FX, and lot more.

Here's an interesting passage which explains the reasoning for the delay for 3D conversion:

“They [Paramount] were looking at a lot of other films coming through and people enjoying them in 3D,” explains James Madigan. “We were looking at the film and this thing is screaming for it. It was one of those things where it needed it but there was no way it could fit into the schedule. The only solution was to move the June 29th release date and it is one of those movies you want to have it.” Madigan adds, “To be honest it was always coming up and we talked about it in the beginning and then it came up again. Jon had done Step Up 3D [2010]. Any kind of new technology Jon is a real master of. It was something he had in mind. I’m not saying that he set up all of his shots with an eye towards conversion but he thinks that way. When we were reviewing and creating things he was like, ‘This would be great in 3D.’ Sort of lamenting it because we weren’t doing it. No one wants to push the release date but when the producers offered to put the money on the table to do it, it was like, ‘Great!’ It was more Paramount seeing what they had and saying, ‘This is worth it.’” Madigan was pleased with the decision. “It looks great in 3D. It does feel like a movie that was always intended for it.”
