JoeCon 2013 Custom Jam Event Moved To New Hotel

For those of us who wanted to attend a G.I.Joe themed custom class this year at JoeCon 2013, our options were limited. The G.I.Joe Collectors Club did not provide the fans an opportunity to sign up for an official event. So a few community leaders in the customs field put together a fan driven event called JoeCon Custom Jam. The even was to be held in the same hotel as the 2013 JoeCon event, until today.

Since it's so late in the game, we wanted to make sure all the board members who are attending this event, know that the JoeCon Custom Jam 2013 has been moved to one of the adjacent hotels. Final details have not yet been provided to us at this time, but check the thread attached to this news story for further updates pertaining to JoeCon's 2013 Custom Jam.

Raginspoon.com & BrokenArrowToys.com present the First Annual JoeCon Custom Jam!

This event will be held on Thursday April 4th between the hours of 9AM to 4PM in the JW Marriot Indianapolis (room TBA). This custom class & swap meet will be open to the public and admission is just $20. For those of you arriving later on Thursday and want to stop in, prices will be adjusted for you as you arrive.

For your admission price you will have the opportunity to participate in a custom building jam session where you can trade tips and tricks with other GI Joe customizers. Some materials will be provided (as donations come in) but it is a good idea to bring your favorite paints/brush/glue/hobby knife, and some parts to trade with everyone else attending.

Raginspoon.com will also provide an exclusive head casting that can only be gotten from him at this event. BrokenArrowToys.com will be putting on a simple casting and mold-making tutorial where you will be able to take away a couple of the parts made during the class. Materials for this demo were generously donated by Reynold's Advanced Materials in Dallas.

The event will also have a couple of tables for swapping so bring your trade-bait and grab that one item you can't live without!

Also, BrokenArrowToys.com and Raginspoon.com will have their inventories on hand if you need that special part to finish up your custom during the class. Seating will be available on a first come basis, and pre-payment of the class fee will assure you a place at the table.

Payments can be made using Paypal to Raginspoon@yahoo.com . Please contact RS via email to have your name added to the list before submitting payment. If you are interested in donating parts or supplies for this event, please contact RS at Raginspoon@yahoo.com. All who donate will receive a call out in any materials promoting this event, and at the event itself. Hey, free (mostly!) publicity!

Great idea since the club has dropped the Custom Class.

Both do some real quality work, it would be worth attending if you can.

This sounds great! I'd love to be able to go.

Wish I could make it, Indy is a little to far from the West Coast for me.

I am look forward to seeing new customs with all the knowledge that will be spread around there.
Dragasses:

Nice! Save your receipts!
Alyosha:
Just a heads up. As I understand it, there are about a dozen people signed up and paid already. If you are planning to attend (even for just part of the day) please contact Raginspoon@yahoo.com and ask him to add you to the list. We want to make sure no-one get's left out.

Another round of information: The room details will be posted here by this coming Tuesday along with pics of the head that Raginspoon is handing out to each paying attendee.

Picked up the materials we'll be working with in the tutorial part of the class. Dragonskin Medium silicone, and Smoothcast 327 plastic. If you don't have plans for Thursday, think about coming by!
Alyosha:
Last announcement before Joe Con. The customs class/jam session is in room 202. This room is located on the second floor, to the left of Starbucks, past Griffin Hall. The rooms will be on the right hand side of the foyer space.

Raginspoon was thinking very positive, and had the room set for around 60 people, so there is plenty of space for everyone. If you are arriving late, and just want to come in and browse the swap & trade tables, entrance is only $10. If your attending, bring something that you want to trade off. No limitations on what it might be!

Finalizing the tutorial portion of the class, we'll be pouring some basic molds (heads most likely) and setting those up to cure. We'll also be showing a basic mold box set up and ready to pour, and then showing how to handle silicone and curing that as well. After the resin has cured, you'll be allowed to take a piece of two with you as a bonus.

Worked on the exclusive head that Raginspoon is giving away to all paying attendees last night. It's pretty cool, and I think you'll like it. He is setting it up in a gang mold right now, so everything is on track! Hope to see you there!
Alyosha:
Well, it's the eleventh hour, and of course there are issues. This morning Raginspoon got a call from the Con hotel saying that there was a "rider" with the contract with the GIJCC saying that any GI Joe related activities had to go through them so the location for the class will be changing. The contact at the hotel name-dropped Brian Savage specifically in his email. At the moment, it appears that it will be in one of the adjacent hotels and I will post the new details as soon as I get them today.

Needless to say, this move by the GIJCC was unexpected to say the least (although it probably shouldn't have been). As fans of the Con in general and the customizing class in specific both Raginspoon and myself are disappointed and inconvenienced by this, but the class will go on. Please watch this space (as well as my FB page) for updates later today.

You are right, it shouldn't have been a surprise knowing who we are dealing with here. Even though this even will do nothing to take a single dollar out of Savage's pocket, he views it as a threat.
FLINT YOJOE:
No surprise there. I will definitely be joining the class. Thanks for the update.

Wrong thread , Trolling is against the rules. Post your complaints in the appropriate bst feedback thread.
Thanks to Alyosha and Raginspoon for organizing this. $20 is a steal for this event. Much respect and appreciation to you both.

Our original location in the hotel was changed this morning due to issues arising from the GIJCC. The new location is:

The Convention Center across the street. We will be in room 144, which as I understand it is straight past Starbucks on the second floor across the skywalk bridge from the Hyatt. Here is a quick and dirty map:

Goin' Commando:
I hate that I'm going to miss this!

If I was able to make it to Con I'd definitely be there.

I'm disappointed to hear that the club shut this down. It's a great gesture to put on something like this and something most people might not get to do on a regular basis.

It sounds to me like jealousy. That and they aren't benefitting from it so they don't want it going on. Ridiculous.

Anyway, regardless, I hope all goes well now and everyone enjoys it. A good idea from some good folks.

I'm not sure for how long.

Thanks for the update.
The reasons behind it do suck though.
Alyosha:
I'm not 100% certain on what reasons were where, and how. I kept the statement to the bare facts as I understood them, so please don't read anything into it and make a judgement. It is what it is, a minor inconvenience at best. Thanks to everyone who is a well wisher, and I hope that if Raginspoon decides to do this again next year, more of you can attend.

I sincerely hope that the club does put on a customizing class next year that is on par with what they've been doing forever for the Transformer class (including and exclusive figure). That really does piss me off.

"Oh that's ok sir, this is not a GI Joe related event. We changed the event to a 'Modern Era Military Action Figure Custom Class' (3 minutes ago) better known as MEMAFCC. This is not affiliated with GI Joe, Hasbro, or the current collectors club convention, this was purely coincidence. Thanks and we will see you at check in!"
cmderinchief:
Best of luck with this guys!
Raginspoon:
as promised and finally the picture of the head to be given away for attendees.

Raginspoon:
Alyosha, It looks like you will take the southern sky-walk go down the stairs and go north. I drew a red line. The JW said the sky-walk is on the 2nd floor by the Starbucks. It looks like you drew a line from the Hyatt.

A.V.A.C.:
To echo Gary's post, best of luck and I hope it's a success. I wish I could make it, but I have prior engagements. See you guys in Indy and safe travels!
Rockhammer:
What time is this going to be?
Raginspoon:
It will be from 9am to 3:30/4 on Thursday.

Crap, I won't be able to make it. But kudos to you and John for doing this. I'd totally support it too, if only I had planned on being there earlier. As it is, I won't be there until around 4 or 5.

UMAN:
I'm gonna try to make this and bring a box of fodder... which I hope I don't have to bring back home with me.
Alyosha:
Firstly (regarding the Un-Official Customizing Class), it was a good event! We had planned on a maximum turnout of 30 people, and 18 or so showed up for the fun. Good numbers given the last second nature of the event and venue change.

Secondly (and most important), I wanted to say a sarcastic "Thank You" to the person(s) who walked off with SIX (6) of Raginspoon's personal custom figures over the weekend. While he is flattered that you liked his work that much that you had to steal the figures, it wasn't necessary to do so. You could have just asked if they were for sale, as he is reasonable and may have taken an offer.

As a community, if you see anyone posting the following customs using Raginspoon's figure kits, please point them out. The figures that are missing are:

H.E.A.T. Viper (with original sculpted wax head)
Schrage
Plague Munitia
Plague Laser Viper
Plague Range Viper
Plague Velocity
Iron Grenadier Robot Trooper

Again, thanks to everyone who attended the class. I hope you feel like you got your moneys worth and thanks to everyone who came by the booth to shop. Both Raginspoon, Corey Stinson, and myself appreciate the business and meeting everyone face to face. Looking forward to seeing you again soon!
straightedge:
That is sad to hear. Ragin'Spoon is a really nice guy, and his customs were a blast to see up close. But even a good time like JoeCon has to be sullied with dbags and thieves. Sucks.

The custom class was amazing, however, and as someone who didn't get to participate inthe mixing, matching, and painting part, the demo was absolutely awesome, and seeing how much thought, effort, and care goes into your molding process, it was truly worth the price of the class.

That I had to insist you both take my money having not truly participated is why the Custom Class, and both of you, are a Class Act, for sure.
sparks007:
Sucks to hear that someone had to rip something off . I know your booth was crazy sometimes when I walked by ,but I kinda thought that everyone was looking out for each other. Do you have any idea which day the items went missing ? Just curious as it may shed some light on who did it. I was really looking forward to the class and I am sorry I missed it , but it was very cool of Raginspoon to give me the headsculpt he had made for those who prepaid. The very short time I got to talk to him before he got busy was cool and I really appreciated the advice he shared. You both are great for putting on the class and the thief should be ashamed of them self.
Tree-Bot:
Urrgggahhh that really sucks and so sorry to hear this and really hope this didn't happen at the class.
I had great fun as a complete outsider and really appreciate the help and advice both Paul and Corey gave me on the day, although I probably held up their work
Dave
Alyosha:
Thanks for the words fellas. The figures went missing on the show floor during the day on either Friday or Saturday. I know RS has already gathered most of the parts he needs to replace the work.

The class was a lot of fun, and if the GIJCC doesn't offer one next year, we will be doing it again.
Diezelboi:
Good to hear Aly, I'll be sure to lend you some beartraps and claymores for the numbnutts with hot hands who can't refrain from stealing. Looking foward to any future products you and Spooner has got coming in the future ;P
Sneedlebarp:
I gather RS's parts sold out too at 'con, as the Chain Gun armor is on my want list for so long now and it is still out of stock...e-mail was already sent.
Alyosha:
Well fellas, it seems like the hits just keep on coming. I've spent most of the day putting the 100 or so custom figures I took with me back on stands, and into their cases and it seems I also had one walk off over the weekend (Sunday actually).

The figure missing was the last ARAH style figure I made, a Night Force colored Hit & Run. I made about 12 of them, assembled one for myself, gave one away to PLuv, and sold two to KrymsynguardImmoral (one regular, one all black). I know I'll never have that particular one back, but if you see anyone posting pics of an assembled copy (the ones I handed out were not put together), please drop me a note.

As an aside, this is the last work I'll be doing with any ARAH stuff. I had copies of every one of the 1995 protos I've done on display at Con, and there was not one single person who asked about them. As far as that goes, ARAH is dead.
