Joecon 2012 - Behind the Scenes of Retaliation Panel

Panel: Behind the Scenes of G.I. Joe: Retaliation - Hasbro

Check back here for real time updates of the Retaliation Panel from Joecon 2012! Starts at 11:00 AM Eastern, 10 Central.

We will update this post, you must be reading it from the full story page, not the front page of HissTank. So click in here to see it live.

EDIT - Panel pictures uploaded. Lots of good stuff in here. More thorough text breakdown later today.

______________________________

Welcome to the behind the scenes panel for G.I. Joe Retaliation, the hit blockbuster movie of the summer next spring.

The panel will be a guided tour of how they put the movie together.

They are currently showing concept art of the vehicles. (Pics coming in a bit).

And now onto costumes. Not much to report here, just pics shown.

Weapons - Joe and Cobra will have different brands of weapons.

Now moving on to weapons of the movie.

All weapons used are real.

Wanted it to be more real and not look like laser guns.

Going over why people look the way they do.

A more comprehensive round up of what is being said/shown will be coming after the panel BTW. We only have one person there and it's hard to type and take pics at the same time. :)

Firefly is the "Bobba Fett" of the movie.

Redesign of Snake Eyes

Not good for Ray Park. Limited his movement.

Too hot, rubber suit made him lose weight on first film.

New suit done for movement, and to return the look to a more fan favorite incarnation.

Actors used real swords when fighting.

Real weapons with real training.

The Rock was very involved with his action figure.

Redid his figure to be more on point, and make the figure more buff.

And now, on to the questions...

No questions about delay of the movie

Why is Lady Jaye's hair so long in the movie?.......

No word back on that one from our team....

Got onto The RZA, and how awesome he is in the movie.

Really good costume, and impressive performance as Blind Master.

Lots of hidden gems for fans, more Cobra troops not seen yet.

That's about it, a full text wrap up of this panel will be up on HissTank.com later in the day. Next up, The Hasbro Panel. Check that out here: Joecon 2012 Hasbro Panel Live.

Joecon 2012 - Behind the Scenes of Retaliation Panel - GI Joe News

Check that for real time updates, pics if allowed will come in during and after!
CobraCrimson:
So, no new figures shown for this year at all, like DG/FD figs, etc.?

No Hasbro question/avoid-the answer panel about why this and what's next?

Man, if they release that Cobra Officer shown in the what could have been pics, I'm sure they could sell a mint of them easy! That Officer looks perfect! The Stinger Driver too especially if they have a new Stinger based on the PoC/30th Vamp framework. Like the new Eel, grey Viper, Tele-Viper (!), Laser-Viper, HEAT-Viper and the blue Joe Diver alot also. If only they release these even at the dollar stores with plain Arashikage style card art like the first wave has but with better distribution!
Lantern_Lad:
I think that panel is coming up later today... if I remember correctly.
C.I.A.D.:
We will be seeing "new" product eventually. Whether or not that refers to Retaliation product we've already seen, or something completely new remains unknown.

Stay tuned.

Finally some good news, and interesting.

Let us know.

Cdt Weasel:
What no panel where the hasbro execs just stand around and laugh manically while we gnash our teeth and wail about the toys we dont get?
Parc Elohssa:
Sigh.

This is why this movie BS has to stop. Now, I have NO problem with movies or toy tie-ins, but to STOP the line during the movie is just dumb. Overall, its hurting the line. Look at GI JOE 25th. It was really doing well, selling out in stores, we were getting nice vehicles, the prices were good...

Then the movie hit. Hasbro lost ALL the footing GI JOE had gained. The movie toys did mediocre sales at best. Most stores had to clearance it out to get rid of it.

30th was great, but it never was able to match the momentum the 25th line had at it's peak. It was starting to gain some ground, but then got pulled off the shelves so we can get the Retaliation toys.

Then the Retaliation toys got pulled cause Retaliation got poor scores at a test screening. Or, as Hasbro calls it, IT NEEDED TO BE IN 3D. No? That isn't being sold to the fans? Okay, how about...we need more Tanning Chatum. (Who, in a recent interview, STILL has NOT been contacted about Retaliation Re-Shoots. Hmmm.)

Movie toys get exclusivity, because percentages of these sales are given to top execs and players involved in the movies. More money. Having another line that was NOT movie related going on at the same time would "take money away" from these top players to want to have their cake and eat it too. They know they would "loose" money to the 30th, or Renegades sales, if the movie toys had to compete.

That's why the prices have been raised on the movie toys. To pay for this GREED. Sure, the retailers mark the toys up, yada yada yada.

Take this thought into consideration. In 2007 GI JOE 25th toys retailed at my local Target for $4.99. That was 5 years ago. Now, that same target it selling GI JOES MOVIE TOYS for $10.99.

Now, to add injury to insult, the new movie toys offer us less. Less articulation. No file cards. No stands. No accessories (but oversized dumb rocket firing parts aplenty. By the way, KIDS do not WANT these obese weapons. Watch kids play with GI JOE. They will play with that silly spring loaded rocket launcher once, then disgard it faster than an adult collector. Hasbro says this is what kids want, but this is the same people who run GI JOE. Look at what a horrid job they've done this year alone, as pointed out in this article. In other words, they're full of crap).

Let's also point out that Hasbro burned bridges with the Retaliation scandal. Retailers were forced to clearance out their inventory to make room for the movie toys (discussed above), only to have the movie delayed, and future releases of the toy delayed for 9 months.

I can understand WHY retailers are pissed. Target said they are going to "cut back" on what they carry on GI JOE because of this. I don't know about your Target, but mine carries 2 pegs of GI JOE. That's it. 2 pegs of figures....2 pegs that are almost always empty.

So, back to the movie toys. We're paying over 100% more, getting a LOT less. That's MORE than a 100% mark up from 5 years ago. Inflation does not expand this fast. Not even in this economy. This is nothing short of GREED.

GI JOE will NEVER be the toyline is so deserves. Canceling toys that had grown from a double release 5 figure set to Store Exclusives (TRU 5 packs, TRU 3 packs), large vehicle releases (Conquest X-30, Rattler), over 100 action figures made...to a movie line that did BRISK business...to restarting the line....to stoping it for a movie that got pushed back...to NOTHING that we have now.

This is why HASBRO is destroying GI JOE. And it's a shame. Look at all the potential it had.
NAJA EMPIRE:
I am not that disappointed with hasbro this year, for what they are as a dictatorship and monopoly they produced... kind of ?!?!?!

"No questions about delay of the movie"

What a crock of crap, this is a movie QnA

That's because their answer goes without saying......"No comment."
jestermon:
I think it's humerous how they keep showing toys we won't get as well, I think they will be going to subscription only like Mattel.

Most of the 30th figures might as well have been online exclusives only since they were mostly impossible to find, only saw the Sci-Fi, Lifeline, Zombie-Viper wave once.

Might as welll have been exclusives to somewhere.
B and H Comics:
They showed these so at the panels the questions will be can we please get so and so released, instead of why is the movie pushed back? Can you take a more direct approach with the club the keep f'ing up, Why was the movie really pushed back, did retailers get pissed at you guys, why does your distrubtion suck on all your lines, what is up with your ten and soon to be 11 dollar figures (oh that starts Sunday doesnt it)? and so on and so on
Steevy Maximus:
This thread is to discuss the film panel, NOT HASBRO, stay on topic or there will be consequences
Ford:
If somebody actually asks "why Lady Jaye's hair is so long", I hope they throw him off the roof without a parachute.
B and H Comics:
Why is Lady Jaye's hair so long in the movie?.......
seriously
CobraOfficer999:
I just asked him whether or not they planned tp release Flint and lady Jaye with wave 3,4, 5 or another one. He said they did.
Fox:

And now, on to the questions...

No questions about delay of the movie
What no one has the balls to ask about this?
Dolemite:
How does no one ask any questions about the film's delay? That's retarded.

Seriously, fuck everyone in that audience. Well, except the nice HissTank dude who was transcribing everything. He was just doing his job.

People are stupid. Did the guy who asked that question have a neck beard?
WVMojo:
Ok discussing the film panel...sounds like it was a waste of an hour...
Dolemite:
Yes. Sounds like a total waste.
rglass2:
Yep, I'm still excited about the movie...haters gonna hate but come March we will all be eating popcorn, and some of you may being eating crow as well
cmderinchief:
Fun panel!!

Shin Densetsu:
The concept art for some looks BAD ASS!

Welp, looks like Storm Shadow has no sneakers in the new movie, and the figure we got in wave 1 was based on the concept art.
IIIzoeIII:
wow....they should have stuck a little closer to that concept art eh...
why did they just go through and ditch everyone's boots????

snake eyes looked excellent storm shadow looked excellent cobra looked excellent then they all look like they're missing something in the movie...sigh..firefly's designs are top notch they just ignored those awesome concepts and straight made him look like poo...why?

I'm glad they didn't make everyone a ninja though that flint design with the all black suit and collar + ninja sword is way not cool.
jinx it looks like they just went with the 1st thing off the top of their head..like hey we made something that looks nothing like jinx! yay go with it!
Scotty97:
"Here are pics of the cool vehicles in our movie. Don't you wish we had made toys that even remotely resembled them or used new parts?Hahaha, you're silly, fans."

Not just Storm Shadow, but it looks like wave 1 Cobra Commander and Raodblock also came from these concepts.
RedHeadKevin:
Yeah, the Roadblock art looks great. Now if they had just followed through with the concept art and cast Terry Crews (like I suggested when I saw the 6th Day, lol)
edhellman:
the cobra guy lifting weights... is that zartan?
Ash Talon:
What possible advantage is there from having a handle attach to both a knife and gun? If someone/thing somehow disarms you, you have no back-up weapon. "Whoops, lost my all-in-one weapon, guess I'm defenseless."

I really like those FANGs. Hopefully, those make it as toys.

The Joe buggy is cool as well.

I understand them being rushed and having to release the AWE Striker (retire it already) and Moccasin as substitutes for vehicles. I wonder if they're going to do proper ones as toys next year. After all, the movie's delay is allowing them to get movie-accurate figures out next year. Maybe we'll get some vehicles as well.

I'd like to see them not ship anymore of the Ghost Hawk II and redo it properly as an Echo-class vehicle.

I'd imagine it's Firefly, since there are Firefly pictures right after. This picture shows some kind of circuitry pattern in his arms. Remember, his toy has translucent forearms. They could be tied together.
Scarface:
Um Scotty97, that motion-capture sig is glorious.
