JoeCon 2010 and G.I.Joe Renegades

The guests at JoeCon 2010 were treated to info on the new, upcoming G.I.Joe Series, G.I.Joe Renegades!

The animation is on a G.I.Joe Resolute level. The G.I.Joe Renegades toy line will launch in Fall of 2011. The line will be a follow up to G.I.Joe Pursuit of Cobra which will end after Spring of 2011.

Renegades is a relaunch. The story starts off with the G.I.Joe Team on the run. There will be 26 episodes to start out, beginning with a 2 Part Pilot.

The 2 stills that were shown are of very high quality, which is a big plus for those that are looking forward to this new series. Unfortunately, there was no footage/sound.

The Hasbro Team hinted at a Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow 2 Part Arc and also noted that we'll be getting back stories for characters! There will be no "dumbed down" stories as the writing in the series has both children and adults in mind.

We'll definitely be sure to fill you in on more details as they're received. For now, join in on the discussion in progress!

* The series will premiere in the fall on the Hub network, a partnership between Hasbro and the Discovery Channel

* Margaret Loesch is the Executive Producer

* 26 episodes will be a part of the first season, with a 2 part pilot and the 7th & 8th episodes focusing on Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow

* Additional mini-arcs will also occur during the season

* The new series has no continuity with prior classic series, Resolute or the film series

* The series is essentially "GI Joe Year One" and will focus on the characters as grunts and spooks during the beginning of GI Joe

* The team is on the run from Cobra

* We will learn where the characters got their nicknames

* Cobra Commander will wear his distinctive mask

* Destro's mask has a purpose

* The core team consists of characters with distinctive personalities

* The animation is traditional 2D with extensive focus on light and shadow. The backgrounds appear to have a watercolor look

* The stories are not written for kids, but the series will not use bullets or any traditional weaponry. Characters will have signature weapons

* Toy line will launch in Fall 2011
Admiral Snackbar:
Sounds like it will be a great time....
Freedom:
If the animation is similar to Resolute, then the figures won't be stylized. I'm glad they're not going the Transformers Animated and Clone Wars route.
Snake Shadow09:
pics of the 2 stills?
80sKid:
This sounds very exciting! Was thinking of the million ways they could screw up this cartoon but if what is posted here is what we can expect it sounds perfect! ...Wish I was there got friends who live in Providence, I should have taken some vacation time and made it happen!

...I'm thinking that Low Light could possibly be for this toy line????? Also does anyone have pics of the two stills shown?
captain N:
Ok the toy line is out in 2011? But weres the date for the show?
CrimsonGuard101:
Ok they have perked my attnetion with the not dumming it down and possibility they wont be stylized like transformers animated. Best news I have heard yet. Time for them to execute and deliver. Sux though that POC will ending the spring of 2011 thats what august sept oct nov decem jan feb march? 8 months before a new series of figures gets released...again. If it hangs onto Resolute and the look and feel of POC I am all for it. Hate to start all over again with a another new toy line which will then segway into ROC 2.0 another new toy line argh...

they are. it will be called PRIME.
Syn3sthesia:
So far I like what I hear.

About this HUB, is it an online only network or will Cable and DISH networks carry it?
Ash Talon:
I find it odd that the show will be out for a full year before any toys hit.

Hopefully, POC is close enough in style that it'll satisfy kids. However, I think it's a mistake to not have toys available at a show's launch. Especially a show designed to sell toys.

It's sort of the opposite of Resolute at first. A few figures were released before the cartoon ever aired (once) and then retail got rid of the 25th/modern/Resolute lines. When the cartoon came out a few months later, there was nothing available. Now figures are coming out over a year later, which seems to be their plan for Renegades.

Very glad to hear this confirmed. I just hope comcast will carry the hub and hopefully in HD.

So anybody want to describe the stills? like who was in it, or whatever? I'm kinda curious. Is the style the same Resolute, or does quality just refer to the colors or the fluidity of motion. (Quality can mean so many things when we're talking about animation).
Snake Shadow09:
why no pics of the cartoon?!! WHYYYYYY? it comes out in 5 months ffs.

"The animation is on a G.I.Joe Resolute level."

I Loved G.I. Joe Resolute. I watched every episode online, then watched the full movie on Cartoon Network, and bought the DVD the day it came out. Resolute is Awesome. I liked it Much more then ROC movie.

I was worried that the new Joe toon would be anime style like TF. So glad to hear that the animation is on Resolute level. Great news. I hope kids will switch from SW Clone Wars and turn to Joe fans.

I wouldn't call Transformers Animated "Anime" it's very western in a lot of ways. Closer to Teen Titans or Power Puff Girls then anime.

My question again is what does "Resolute level," mean there are so many ways to judge animation. Character and Mechanical design style being the most subjective. I'll wait till there are clips before I make any judgment.

About the 2 images (Found on the net):

* Duke wore a full green military bodysuit, with a tan flack vest covering it. The Flak Vest was slightly reminiscent of the reactive armor. It was angled, and sleek (not loaded with pouches like Resolute), but the overall look was reminiscent of the familiar tan and green. He held a pistol, and had short-cropped blonde hair.

* Snake Eyes wore a sleek body suit of black and dark gray, similar in design to Duke’s armored vest. A sword was on his back, he wore his visor, and he had baggy black combat pants. The look was somewhat “Sigma 6″ like in appearance, from the body suit angle.

GREAT work brother. I had a feeling you were onto something man. high-5/co-sign
Shin Densetsu:
The fact that this cartoon WILL NOT BE DUMBED DOWN is an almighty WIN for me. That was the primary thing I was worried about. It's about time we had a full length series that wasn't dumbed down. Sunbow was cool for childhood and nostalgia, Sigma 6..eh was cool for toys, Resolute was awesome but isn't what I would deem full length and RENEGADES sounds full of potential.

If the toys are ANYTHING like what we are seeing for the POC 2011 assortment, we are in for a treat. If anything I have learned from the past years it's this; when it comes to toys, GI Joe fans don't give a damn about continuity. How many people who hated the movie line are loving POC? A lot. A lot of us love the POC stuff because it is a damn cool line with a lot of great designs, irregardless of what continuity it is from.

With the designs for Renegades said to be similar to Resolute, now I'm not concerned about highly styalized figures and gimmick-killing articulation. Sounds like GI Joe is about to get the treatment it always deserved. Since 2002 I've always felt that GI Joe's return to mass retail was botched and had so much lost potential. For the 1st time in years, I think marketing wise, something is being done right.
green_shirt:
So this is going to be a G.I. Joe A-Team/Burn Notice sorta story line then. Kinda figured it would be. I still wonder if it's gonna tie into the new Hama comic story.

I can't wait to see this.
MST3KFan:
From a pic I saw of Duke on Terrordrome for this...I notice that the Duke figure they showed off with the new flak jacket and stuff seems to be the figure version of Duke for Renegades, and I'd gather maybe the new Snake Eyes shown might be as well.

I actually like it. It is a very good cross between classic with Resolute.

Now if we could see some more stuff as I want to see who at least will be our main Joe cast. I'm guessing something similar to the RoC stuff to keep that somehow relevant...

I was wondering about that, thanks for the info. I'm thinking everything is gonna start to come together as the new Joe story line. Like the new Cobra shock trooper, he looks a lot like a contract private security soldier. That is what Cobra is spozed to be now right?

If so I gotta say I'm starting to like this.

From what I hear so far I am really looking forward to the new cartoon. I am kind of glad it is not Resolute-ish... that just makes Resolute more special IMO.
Immortal_Joker:
dont care bout the look all I care bout is the story for this new toon, Stories are make or break for me not the animation.
ChaplainAsst:
... but bad animation can make even the best stories hard to bear, ie the many complaints about Transformers Animated. I had to suck up the animation sometimes because the stories were often pretty good.

Is it the animation you took issue with or the designs. Because Transformers Animated had pretty fluid and smooth animation. And the designs were good, it just had a western Sat: AM cartoony style to it.
gunslingercbr:
I wasn't interested at all in the cartoon until now, but the concept sounds pretty interesting.
Mandingo Rex:
The Terrordrome has pics of one frame design (Duke). I think that and one more still is all anyone's seen... No running footage.

The design seems similar to Resolute, although not exactly, but the proportions are normal human proportions, for which I am glad. TF:Animated's weird toddler-geared proportions were just odd.
Imperial_Ozma:
can't seem to find this pic on the TD news pages at all.

That Duke design is pretty much the Duke figure that everyone's so hot about that's at JoeCon. It's a good figure, but I'm glad it doesn't look exactly like the animation model. I'm not a fan of the head, and the arms are way too long, but otherwise, the proportions are better than I was fearing.

Note the same colors, collar, vest, kneepads, etc. Same design, if you ask me.
Shadow_01:
can't wait for this to come out.
TheSerpentKing:
I'm much more enthusiastic about this now than I initially was. Still I'm a little dissapointed the weapons won't be traditional or use bullets but overall, i'm definately excited about this.
